Welcome to the first ever guide of the TF College series, where you'll be learning about the HUD ingame. And yeah, we're starting off basic.

Introduction
Welcome to the glorious beginning of the new series, TF College! I finally found a good image for the thumbnail, yay! Anyway, starting off basic here, we'll be discussing the standard TF2 HUD.
Static HUD
Sorry about there not being a picture here, Steam desn't like GIFs. Anyway, the HUD comes in two forms, static and fluctuating. The static HUD will always display the same info, no matter what game mode you're playing. If you're using the stock HUD...

A model of your current class and your health will be in the lower left corner. Health is important (duh), so keep an eye on that. The character model is useless unless you're a disguised Spy. That model will be the EXACT look of the person you're imitating (including hats). If you are a nonexistent enemy class, you'll have no hats and a stock loadout.

Your ammo will be in the bottom right. Your current clip size is the more inward, larger number, and the total ammo remaining is the smaller, farther away number.

The remaining time will be shown at the top center, representing the amount of time until the mission either ends in a draw or overtime starts. There are two timers in KOTH, each one for either RED or BLU's time remaining in control of the hill until they win.

Your reticle is in the center of the screen. It shows where your bullets will go. That's it. If it's hovering over a friendly player, you'll see their name and health.

That's it. Onward!
Variable HUD
The Variable HUD changes based on gamemode. On Valve servers, it's usually in the bottom center. They include...

Cart movement in Payload or Payload Race and checkpoints along the track, as well as ramps that will cause an unpushed cart to roll and the direction it will roll.

Where your intelligence is and the number of points scored by each team in CTF.

Control Points, capture progress, and who owns them in CP, Attack/Defense, or KOTH.

Australium position in Doomsday (The only Australium map).

Players remaining in Arena (located at the top).

While non-Valve servers may do their own thing, I'm not familiar with all of them, so I won't cover them.
Week's Resources
I like the guides that people write in TF2, and I read and comment on a lot of them. So I figured that I would make a section devoted to the guys who try so hard to teach people things about TF2! These may be related to the current topic, maybe not, but they're still good guides. This also acts as a conclusion, so thanks for reading, and the next guide is about Objectives! If you have a topic you'd like me to cover, just post a comment about it!

Here are the week's resources.

Dont you think it would have been a good idea to add pictures in a HUD guide?

you should mention some good websites to get HUDS, like huds.tf and gamebanana.

Also, can you add a section about custom huds? like talk about famous huds and their strengths and weaknesses.

I've had the Shellnut HUD before. Then one day, right after I completely forgot how to set one up, it shut down.

Its a very decent guide for newbies, so I recommend all of them to see this, but only the very starters. Pretty much after 1 hour of playing you know all of this. Naturally, the majority of people who need to read this whilst they are noobs probably wont know how to read a guide, so... sorry. Also, I cant quite see the digtic humour in this, unlike the evolutionary tree's.. Perhaps next time not only it will be better for skipper's but perhaps more humorous? all in all a great guide but intentioned for the noobs! Yet again I look forward to your next guide!

Step 1: Get custom HUD
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit.
Seriously though, stock HUD is :poop: in comparison to a lot of the custom HUDs out there. In normal mode, it's too obstructive and doesn't convey enough numerical information for my liking (not to mention terrible, hard-to-spot damage numbers) and in minimal mode, it shoves crucial information so off to the side that it's difficult to scan the surroundings and keep an eye on your health/ammo at the same time. I use a rather heavily edited version of BroeselHUD, and it's great (it hasn't been updated for Love and War, though, so you'll need some basic knowledge of HUD editing). Picking up a custom HUD really helps. Rayshud, Broeselhud (Broeselhud_blue if you're looking for a more updated version), PVHUD, Frankenhud, EVEHUD, and Flamehud/Communityhud are all good options.

WHY NOT EVEHUD
