The Romanian Waffen-SS divisions were armed formations that emerged as a result of the alliance between the Third Reich and the Kingdom of Romania during World War II. These units primarily consisted of Romanian volunteers who joined the Waffen-SS units, partly due to political and economic pressures. It is important to note that the existence of these formations was inherently tied to the political context of the wartime period. King Carol II, under the influence of the pro-German faction, pushed for closer ties with the Third Reich. As a result of these actions and under pressure from Germany, Romanian Waffen-SS units were established. While these divisions bore the insignia of the Waffen-SS and collaborated with German units, they maintained their own national identity. In contrast to typical Waffen-SS divisions, which were predominantly German, Romanian Waffen-SS divisions were distinguished by their national composition, primarily consisting of Romanian citizens. They primarily fought on the Eastern Front, participating in military operations against the Soviet Union. However, they did not play as pivotal a role as the German Waffen-SS divisions in the conflict. It's worth noting that Romanian Waffen-SS divisions had varying levels of training and experience, with some potentially being less combat-effective than their German counterparts. Even though these formations operated under the overall command of the Waffen-SS, they retained certain insignia and identifying elements that reflected their Romanian origin.
