Allow me to explain - Use this combo of spells on your Phase sigil:
1. AOE pool with control augment,
2. Nova with mastery (and of course a shield that allows charged blink, either Agile or Tactical)
3. Single target Missile with Destruction Augment
(strategy in next comment)
For novas, that's not an advice. :) Advice was, 'do whatever you'd like', because these spells are not crucial for the strategy I described. If that's a panic button for you, instead of a well-calculated way to do some damage about the guy who wasn't careful enough to come too close, or if you prefer to immobilize enemies by chargeblinking into their midst, of course you'll prefer Control instead of Destruction.
@BADTOWNSOUND: yes - that's mostly what all this guide is about. :)
and hopefully, this guide will have enabled you to survive long enough to feel curious about the game instead of frustrated that it's stomping your head in while you do 120 damage for the entire game.
--- Biggest source of disagreement: There's no reason to divide your Sigils into Destruction, Control and Mastery---none whatsoever. Doing so places an entirely arbitrary limitation on the crafting system, for no real gain. Instead, fill your various niches (damage, defense, control, mastery, etc.) with the best spell for the job, regardless of the Sigil it comes from.
--- Especially for the beginner, "I prefer to keep my Novas Destruction-attuned" is dangerous advice: Control-attuned Novas make for FAR better panic buttons---freezing everyone around you with an Ice Control Nova will save your butt far more often than an Ice Destruction Nova.
(bah, 1000 char limit---suggestions coming up!)
--- The "Ray" pattern is a great Targeted Control option, especially in Ice: It's the fastest way to lock an enemy down this side of Nova. A Control AOE can handle targets at range, but a Control Ice Ray is fantastic when too many enemies get too close.
--- Consider your SHIELD when deciding which types of spells to lean on the most. Each type of Shield makes casting one class of spell MUCH faster (+30% speed). If you've got a Strategic Shield, emphasize AOE spells: Ice Control Pool + Lightning Mastery Pool + Fire Destruction Area = BOOM. But as soon as you switch to an Agile shield, you're gonna want to consider making Targeted spells your principal means of attack.
--- if you see the blue beacon of a Vortex Pool ahead, don't pop any loot pinatas (it's what I call those pustules/ice blocks/whatever that break and release spells) until you've activated it and gained the Rarity Increase.
