[No longer works] Here's a hacky fix to the cutscene bug on Steam Deck
By callidus_asinus
Update! This fix no longer works
For some reason, the devs decided to do work to make this fix unworkable. They neglected to resolve the issue, though. They must not want the game to run on Deck?

TL;DR
Some .mp4 video files in
steamapps/common/HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED™ 2/hotwheels2/Content/Movies/CareerCutscene/
won't play on Deck, resulting in unskippable black cutscenes. If you replace these bad .mp4 files with good ones, you can skip these cutscenes and continue playing the game.

Background
This seems to be a common issue affecting Steam Deck users, and prevents progression through the campaign—despite the "Verified" status for Deck.

As far as I know, no other fix has been posted for the issue. This guide provides steps for a hacky fix which requires some legwork, but works for me.
Bugfix steps
  1. Switch to desktop mode
  2. Use your file explorer to navigate to the
    /CareerCutscene/
directory of the game. Mine is located at
    /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED™ 2/hotwheels2/Content/Movies/CareerCutscene/
  3. Replace any bad .mp4 files in this directory with good ones. From what I can tell, the opening campaign cutscene plays correctly for most people (myself included). This good file is named
    00_Nar_CareerStart.mp4
So, I copied this file by right-clicking it and selecting "Duplicate Here". Then, I replaced the first offending campaign cutscene
    01_Nar_Area1.mp4
with this new duplicate file by right-clicking the newly duplicated file and selecting "Rename" (setting its name to the bad file's). Personally I didn't want to entirely delete the bad file, so I just prepended it with a
    _
    So it became
    _01_Nar_Area1.mp4
Keeping bad .mp4 files isn't a requirement, though
  4. Start the game, and trigger the cutscene. If you followed the above steps, the career start cutscene should play, and you can skip it. This should allow you to continue in the campaign until another bad cutscene tries and fails to play. When this happens, repeat the above steps and replace the bad .mp4 file.

Hopefully this both makes sense and works for you if you're experiencing this issue.

Would love to know if there's any new workarounds on the deck. Shame this is unplayable,

I was able to complete the main career mode and unlock all videos in the story, hopefully they don't play again so I can continue to play in the latest version.

Instructions on how to downgrade are a bit lengthy, there are existing guides on it, condensed to the most important part for unleashed 2;

I have this issue on windows, I was able to skip the cut-scenes by downgrading to the release version.

Downgrading has downsides, your existing save file cannot be used the game will wipe it. You cannot play online. You cannot use cars that were released later (I have some cars without model, didn't try to use them)

I cannot verify if this also works for steam deck; perhaps another can. I don't know if the steam deck needs additional files in the game folder that are not included in the game depot.

I seriously wouldn't have a problem with the video player being broken if I could at least skip it and view the videos in VLC

Malice, or wild incompetence. For both Steam and Milestone. Shame on everyone who says this game can run on Deck.

Just make the freaking skip button work, folks.

There's no reason that they'd do it intentionally as a means to stop cheating or specifically Linux users, as, for one and again, this is not a Linux or Deck-exclusive issue, the video player (or more specifically how the campaign loads videos, and how the skip button is non-functional until the video is done loading for some stupid reason) is broken on all PC platforms and simply happens more often on the Deck. Another thing is that this is the single-player campaign, the anti-cheat is primarily in place for online multiplayer after they realised how much it was an issue in HWU1.

I'm not certain this fix works any more, per Free9d9. Wild that they would actively check mp4 files to destroy this fix, rather than resolve the issue.

Seems like they may not want the game to run on Deck?
