Contains generic as well as game specific terms. There's also some terms which are simple, but which in the context of this game require disambiguation. Couldn't find any previous, similar efforts in the Guides section.

  • 100 100: Maximum values of health plus suit that a player can charge on a standard map that has suit pickup but no superchargers.
  • 100 200: Maximum values of health plus suit that a player can charge on a standard map that has supercharger(s).
A
  • Alt:
    • Alternate account, as opposed to main account.
    • Alt fire, alternate fire, or secondary fire for SMG and AR2.
  • Arena: Any map featuring large leveled area(s), as opposed to the stock format, in standard dm/tdm game mode. Usually symmetrical up to a point, with the leveled area in the middle of the map. Includes round shaped arenas, box shaped arenas (killbox), and some exceptions like aim_arena_reloaded (most don't consider this map an arena). Not all symmetrical maps are arena maps, see trainzzz map variations.
B
  • Bhop:
    • The act of using a game exploit to perform advanced movement aka bunny hopping.
    • Standing bhop, as opposed to crouched bhop aka skating.
    • Combining bhop and skating.
    • A game similar to HORSE where players take turns performing a bhop or jump trick that the rest of the players need to follow.
    • A sequence of advanced movement techniques in the game of BHOP. Can include air control.
  • Bounce:
    • A successful jump after a landing.
    • Jump off/use a bouncer platform in a map.
    • Ricochet. A bolt, orb or prop continuing to travel after touching a surface.
    • A reproducible ricochet/trajectory for a bolt or an orb to reach a target indirectly.
C
  • Cfg:
    • Config, or configuration. Can refer to either computer setup, or in-game settings, or one or more configuration files.
    • A cfg (file) is a text file with the .cfg extension that has a sequence of console commands. Can be a client side or server side cfg. Usually refers to the standard config.cfg within the hl2mp folder.
  • Clan: [archaic] A long term/permanent team of players with a shared mindset. It features: occasional in-house games, a core roster plus fill-ins and mascots/honorary members, a mandatory tag, not so mandatory high skill, and debatable exclusivity. Think stability, prestige/fame, history, legacy. Serious clans will not get disbanded before leaving their mark on the game and the community, for example: an e-sports nursery, a record of their dm/tdm results in competitive play, a clan server, a map or other types of community content, etc.
The term fell out of popularity (for obvious reasons) in favor of 'Team'.
  • Clans-United: The largest and longest running league in the game (afaik). European. No longer active. One season even featured 7 divisions in the 1v1 league. Each season had skill based promotions and demotions to ensure fair sign-ups in the next season.
  • Cmd/Command:
    • Command line options, game launch options from Steam's Library.
    • Console command(s).
    • Chat command(s). specific to severs, with match servers having some common ones.
  • Comp: Competitive.
  • CU:
    • Clans-United.
    • Map name suffix denoting one of the competitive versions of the map.
D
  • DM:
    • Deathmatch (1 vs 1 or ffa).
    • Prefix for map names, denoting standard game mode.
  • Dmg: Damage.
  • Double:
    • Double Barrel Shotgun shot, or Shotgun Secondary Fire.
    • Double kill.
  • Duel: 1v1
F
  • FF: Friendly Fire (mp_friendlyfire).
  • FFA: Free-for-all.
  • Frag:
    • A frag grenade. You spawn with 2 in standard game mode and can hold up to 5.
    • To kill someone with a nade.
    • To land the killing blow on an enemy and have the scoreboard update accordingly. Jihading does not count as a successful kill, so no frag is awarded. In non-standard game modes, the scoreboard shows 'points' instead. These are acquired depending on the mode, such as solving a puzzle, finishing a jump map level, doing damage to a co-op boss, crowbaring the tagged/frozen player, etc.
  • FPS:
    • First Person Shooter.
    • Frames Per Second, visible via 'cl_showfps 1', or 'netgraph 1' through 4.
  • Funwar: [archaic] Scrim.
G
  • Game:
    • A single map, played until a frag limit or time limit is reached.
    • Part of a match.
    • Sometimes used instead of the term 'match'.
  • Gather:
    • The action of gathering pickups.
    • [archaic] Now 'mix'. Gathers used to be regularly planned events aimed at increasing competitive play in the team deathmatch scene. Very similar to Draft Night events. Players would form temporary teams and at least one of the two teams would be random, aka not an official clan/team/pre-made. After the events stopped, 'gather' would mean any non-league tdm game with a timer/config running. If teams were adequately balanced skill wise, a sportsmanlike effort was made to stick around and give losing teams a re-match. If teams were poorly balanced, depending on the continent and the crowd, there was a chance the players would get shuffled around to achieve balance in the next game. Over time, this became known as 'mix'.
  • Grav-nade:
    • Nade + ggun combo, either nade cooking or long/far nade.
    • Plain nade cook.
  • Group:
    • Clan/team members and their fans/friends.
    • Any number of players in a Steam Group, focused around a main theme, such as a server they frequent, a league, game modes, fan club, memes, mapping, etc.
H
  • High-Kill or Hi-Kill or Hi-Kill/Lo-Grav: Game mode where any weapon can one shot, usually played in low gravity.
  • Hitscan: Weapons that have no delay from the time of fire to hitting the target, as opposed to melee or prediction weapons.
  • HL2DMU: Half-Life 2 Deathmatch University.
  • Homemap: A player or a team's main map of choice in a 2+ maps match.
  • Hs: Headshot.
I

    • Invite.
J
  • Join:
    • Join a player on a specific server.
    • Leave spectators team by using the 'jointeam 3' or 2 console command or server menu to join: Rebels/Combine if tdm, or as an active player on the server if normal dm regardless of your model.

M
  • Mag: .357 Magnum
  • Main:
    • Main account.
    • Callout/map call/name for the main area of a map.
  • Match:
    • A set of games/maps in which an overall winner is determined by a pre-announced formula that can't end in a tie. An even number of games is also viable by calculating frag difference or kda average combined with map weight or map control index. The term usually refers to an official match where results are recorded in a league/ladder//tournament/cup. 'A few games', whether 1v1s or mixes where teams are the same over multiple maps, can be considered an unofficial match if the winning condition is preestablished.
    • A single game with a timer/config running (debatably incorrect unless single-elimination).
  • Match server: A server where preconfigured sets of commands are available (to all or admin only) to run timed games/matches. Preferably SourceTV recorded matches, but not mandatory, as some leagues require POV recordings anyway.
  • Mega: 'Mega health' callout in lostarena map.
  • Mix: Any non-league tdm game with a timer/config running where at least one of the two teams are not an official clan/team/pre-made.
O

  • Pre: Preshot.
R
  • Reg: Register, registration. As in hitreg, hit registration.
S
  • Scrim: Practice game or match between any 2 players or teams of players. Can be used to test the strength of another clan before facing them in an official match.
  • Seed: Join an unpopulated or barely populated server in order to get more players to join said server.
  • Slorb: Slow orb.
  • Spam:
    • (To use) Something in large amounts or rapid succession, such as: voice, chat, saysounds commands, specific weapon (rpg, mag, ggun with props, nades) or alt fire (smg nade, orb).
    • To use something considered spam, such as alt fire, even in a limited amount.
    • To bombard someone with various weapons and alt fires in rapid succession or concomitantly. For example: bouncing an orb around, sending an (smg) nade flying towards the enemy and switching to a hitscan weapon, then shooting as the first 2 projectiles find their mark. While the enemy is trying to dodge, maybe also find a nearby prop to hurl at them.
    • Alt fire pickups or inventory.
  • Spec:
    • Join the spectators team by using the server menu or the 'spectate' console command, to either allow players to start their match, or to watch whatever the particular player asking you to spec is trying to show you.
    • Specs/specifications, when referring to system/hardware.
  • Stash: Multiple pickups in a small area on a map.
  • Stock:
    • Any non arena map in standard dm/tdm game mode. Can be an official Valve map or community made.
    • A server with standard gameplay settings, aka vanilla.
  • Suit:
    • Armor in any form, pickup/battery or (super) charger.
    • Armor numeric value that the player has at a given moment.
  • Super: Supercharger.
T
  • TDM: Team deathmatch, as opposed to dm which is regular deathmatch. Rebels vs combine, or nowadays, Green vs Purple when equalizer mode is enabled on match servers.
  • Team <X>: Two or more players being identified by the same tag and regularly playing together in official matches, on a short term basis. The tag isn't necessary to be worn at all times. Players within a team can belong to different clans.
A team was usually smaller than a clan, but since the archaic term 'clan' fell out of popularity in favor of the term 'team', nowadays the clan definition can be applied to a well formed team.
  • TP: Teleport.
  • Tracking:
    • Mentally tracking a player as they move throughout a map.
    • Aim tracking. Tracking a player with a spray weapon mainly (smg, ar2) and shooting by drawing continuous or intermittent lines on the screen.
