Remastering Kingpin with Mods
By CyborgParrot
Given how much of a letdown/train-wreck Kingpin Reloaded was, I figured this would be a good time to teach people (IE anyone reading this) how to put together their own remastered version of the original Kingpin running on good ol' idTech 2 (Quake 2) Engine, using several mods + patches.

1. Bugfixes and Widescreen Support (MH Kingpin Patch)
This is the most important step of the guide, it fixes various bugs and adds support for custom resolutions.

1. Download the file (kingpinpatch_v11.2.zip) from here.[www.kingpin.info]

2. Open the file with whatever file archiving program you use (if you don't have anything like that installed then I highly recommend installing NanaZip).

3. Extract the files patchcfg.exe and wsock32.dll to the root of your Kingpin folder where kingpin.exe is located (if you have no idea where you installed Kingpin, right click it on Steam and then click Properties, then click on the Installed Files tab, and then click Browse and it should open up where you installed the game).

4. Double click on patchcfg.exe, after a few seconds it should've applied the changes and can be safely closed, after you've done that go into the Options & Visuals menus and configure the game to your liking.
2. Effects (QeffectsGL)
OpenGL pseudo-driver (wrapper) that adds some graphical enhancements to OpenGL-based games.

DISCLAIMER: If you're not too fond of adding this sort of visual eye candy into old-school games you can safely skip over this section.

The following effects this implements:
  • Anisotropic texture filtering
  • Full-screen antialiasing (MSAA)
  • HSL color correction
  • Screen-space emboss bump-mapping
  • Screen-space ambient occlusion
  • Bloom
  • Depth of Field (disabled by default)
  • Vignette (disabled by default)
*All of these can be customized, refer to the Customization section on the download page for the list of tweakable parameters.

1. Download the latest version (1.3) from here: https :// github .com/crystice-softworks/QeffectsGL (copy and paste this into your browser and remove the spaces between GitHub)

2. Open the archive and place the 2 files called opengl32.dll and QeffectsGL.ini in the directory where the executable file of the game is located.

By default it should look like this in-game.
3. Textures (Full 2k Texture Pack or Rags 2 Riches Textures)
Now we're getting into the real meat and potatoes of this guide, for this we'll be using the Full 2k Texture Pack by StixsmasterHD4k.

1. Download the mod from here.

2. Open the downloaded archive and you should see a folder called main, extract it into the games root installation directory (...steamapps\common\Kingpin).

If you followed this section right then it should look like this in-game:

NOTE (from the creator): The download/rar is 10.9GB big, and when installed the mod is 10.9GB big. Also, you may need to apply the LAA/Large Address Awareness patch[www.techpowerup.com] to your copy of the game to use my texture pack.

Alternatively, if you're somewhat fussy about disk space, then I would suggest using the textures from the Rags 2 Riches mod.

1. Download the mod from here.

2. Open the archive and there should be 3 files present, but we'll be only needing the file called Pak7.pak which contains the new textures (ignore the file called gamex86.dll, we'll get to that in the next part of the guide).

3. Place the .pak file into the main folder inside the games installation directory (Kingpin\main).

As before, if you followed this section right then it should look like this in-game:

IMO the textures now look much sharper and gritter, whilst still maintaining the original tone of the game.
4. Gameplay (Guns N' Thugs)
Now we're in the final stretch of the guide, for this we'll be using the newly released Guns N' Thugs mod.

Kingpin has a reputation as one of the toughest games of its kind, which can be mainly attributed to the unforgiving AI. This has turned away more than a few people as a result, which this mod seeks to remedy by giving the player a fairer chance with the following tweaks:

  • Enemies are now only as accurate as the player, rather than almost perfectly accurate. They also don't lead their shots anymore, allowing you to dodge their gunfire by strafing.
  • Enemies no longer have a random chance of not playing their pain animation, but also are more likely to do so.
  • Rats will no longer bite you.
  • The Grenade Launcher had its ammo capacity greatly increased, and grenades now explode on contact with enemies.
  • The Flamethrower's fuel consumption per second was lowered from 2 to 1.
  • The cooling jacket mod for the Heavy Machinegun has been changed to last indefinitely.
  • And as a bonus, looting cash off bodies no longer requires crouching first.

1. Download the mod from here.

2. Open the downloaded archive, go into the folder called gunsnthugs, and inside it there should be a file called gamex86.dll.

3. Make a backup of the gamex86.dll in the main folder where the game is installed, and then replace it with the gamex86.dll from the downloaded archive.

5. Sounds (Personal Addon)
TO BE ADDED
6. Additional Content
After you've finished playing the base game with all these enhancements, here are a few SP mods that I highly recommend.

Barren Meadow is a single-player unit for Kingpin following most of the original design choices: it puts the emphasis on shooting, rewards exploration, has a hub connecting multiple action maps and many options to defeat your adversaries (from weapon modifications to hirable henchmen). It features spooky environments and foes, ideal for a spooky Halloween fix. The campaign isn't that long and will last you for an hour to an hour and a half (maybe more on harder difficulties).*

*But it is very much well worth playing, almost feels like an official expansion pack.
As an added bonus it should be possible to play the original campaign with the new mod features: open the console and type "map sr1" to start the game as usual.

1. Download the mod and it's patch from here.

2. Open the mods downloaded archive and there should be a folder called bmeadow, extract it to where you installed Kingpin, and do the same with it's patch (if it asks you to overwrite any existing files, say yes to all).

3. Guns N' Thugs has a compatibility patch for Barren Meadow, download it from here, and replace Barren Meadows existing gamex86.dll with the one from this archive.

A nice Sci-fi-themed mod with new textures and some new NPC skins.

Download it from here (latest version is 1.2) and extract the folder called orbital to where you installed Kingpin.

Guns N' Thugs should work fine with the mod since it doesn't come with it's own .dll.

Another mod worth playing that has some of the best mapping work I've seen for Kingpin.

Download it from here[felikkz7.free.fr], same as before open the .rar file and extract the mods folder (factory) to the root of your Kingpin installation where the games .exe is located.

And again this one doesn't have a custom .dll either, so Guns N' Thugs should work for this (provided you followed the steps for it correctly).
Finish Line
And that's it, if you've followed this guide correctly step-by-step you should now have the definitive Kingpin experience.

Thanks for reading and I hope you'll enjoy the game much more now.

Maybe also add the unofficial sequel campaign - Kingpin: Final Crime?

Excellent guide.
I also love your thumbnail (the impression of the thug from atomik ranger) :)

Just a heads up v2 of my texture pack is out. This version is more accurate and also covers 100% of the game's textures...essentially providing a proper full remastering of the game

just an update I gave up my website in faver of owning a dedicated game host machine that I now use to host like 5+ game servers on.

So you may want to update the url to my 2k texture pack to this url when possible OP: https://www.moddb.com/mods/full-2k-texture-pack
