Introduction and Guidelines
Disclaimer: This guide is based on personal game experience and preferences, mostly played on Normal difficulty. Isn't the most accurate and is still missing some soldiers from other paths, but it will be eventually updated, once I finished the playtrough.

The work is focused on the people, not the overall strategy, altough I will mention it sometime. If you are interest is loosely based on this:

Any opinion, suggestion, improvement and correction is welcome!

Know your comrades

Last Train Home is a game of hardship and hard choice, every soldier matter, as they are all brothers and sisters in arms, but having limited resources and space on your train means you have to choose if the next mouth to feed is really worth on the broader scope of survival.

This guide is divided by chapters and order of when and where you will find new soldiers. Each Legionary will have a vote from 1 to 5, where 1 is "better let this poor sod die" and 5 is "your train will depend on his/her survival" (more or less).
Each Legionary will have his/her traits listed and a personal comment about it. As I said, is a personal opinion.

This guide obviously contain spoiler for the whole game. Try at leas one playtrough without any help, and even if you failed it will give valuable experience.

Here you will have all the Legionaries at your disposal within the campaign. Who will make to Vladivostok and who will left behind? The choice is yours.

Verisons
28 January 2024 - 1.0
9 February 2024 - 1.1 = corrections on Legionaries in Chapter 1
11 February 2024 - 1.2 = Adding Legionaries from Chapter 3 Southern Route
20 February 2024 - 1.2.1 = Corrected a stupid confusion I made with the Herbalist trait
25 February 2024 - 1.2.2 = Added two Legionaries on Moscow chapter (still Wip)
Chapter 1-0: Farms and Windmills
You begin your travel. The first Chaper is just a tutorial, but you get your first Legionaries that most likely you gonna keep 'till the end.

You start automatically with these 4 people, and they will be your most precious Legionaries for a long while.

Antonin Kura[5/5] - Busiest guy in the train

Character: Avaricious
Belief: Religious
Nature: Focused, Herbalist, Sickly
Roles: Machine Gunner, Cook

In the moment you get the train, you gonna send Antonin out a lot: to merchants to get better prices and to forests to get a chance for herbs. For this, his focused trait is going to be overshadowed until you can find substitutes. At the choice of which train car you will get, since the workshop cart is more important, try to make him an engineer first, later you can be coherent to his bio, and make him a cook.

Bedrich Kopecky [5/5] - Need holes?

Character: Diligent
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Focused, Strong-Willed
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

Bedrich is a well-rounded character, being useful both on the field and on train. Being both Diligent and Focused make him excellent to train duty, especially as Worker for save on fuel earlier.
I got him traumatized in my playtrough, so I didn't used him much outside the train.

Magdalena Zamecka [5/5] - Maddy best girl

Character: Humorous
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Charismatic, Housekeeper, Weak
Roles: Medic, Doctor

Magdalena will be a lifesaver in the beginning, in both ways. Her Housekeeper trait will make her a must-have to explore abandoned villages to get bonus goods. And she isn't too shabby in combat too. If played well, she will be a rank 5 Medic and Doctor with no downsides (the Weak trait can be overcomed rater easily early on).

Maximilian Drap [5/5] - Best Reds are dead Reds

Character: Ruthless
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Intelligent, Hunter, Eagle-Eyed
Roles: Scout, Worker

Your master hunter and cold-blooded killer, Max will be your leader in any hunting trip. He doesn't have any downsides and keep being useful trough the whole game. Multiclass him into a Grenadier (or Rifleman if you want a more melee focus) and you will have a killing machine.
Chapter 1 Interlude: A doomed destiny
This is the train crew you will get in Chapter 1. They are all scripted to die if aren't deployed in Moscow, but you can actually save some of them if you follow this guide:
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3113188882

It already shows if it's worth saving them or not (most of them no), but I'll write this section for the sake of being complete.

Anna Davidova [3/5] - Harbringer of Chaos

Character: Careless
Belief: Communist
Nature: Talented, Chaotic
Roles: Doctor, Cook

The Careless and Chaotic toghether will mean she will mess-up in exploration missions, a lot. But her portrait is nice and being Talented allow her to climb the ranks in the train quickly. Following the guide above will make her an excellent Doctor/Medic from the start.

Gustav Beran [2/5] - The Czech Elmer Fudd

Character: Cowardly
Belief: Communist
Nature: Hunter, Sickly
Roles: Worker

A below average blank character, expect him to lose morale time to time due his Cowardly trait. His saving grace is the Hunter trait. Later on you will get more valuable hunters, but is useful in the beginning nevertheless.

David Rozprym [1/5] - Was nice to meet you

Character: Avaricious
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Sickly, Fainthearted
Roles: Worker

The Avaricious trait would be worth saving him, but due his Fainthearted trait he can't take any combat role, so he will die in Moscow.

Johan Kocourek [1/5] - Useless adorable dork

Character: Entertainer
Belief: Religious
Nature: Self-conscious, Clumsy
Roles: Worker

His bio makes me feel bad to let him die, but on the other hand he have nothing worth for saving. Sorry dude.

Josef Kinsky [1/5] - You got forcibly levied, aren't you?

Character: Pacifist
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Sickly, Shortsighted
Roles: Engineer

I mean, come on. Just for his traits he's horrible, a Pacifist so he can't take combat roles, and thus doomed to die at Moscow.

Josef Mejzlik [1/5] - The sacrifical lamb

Character: Vengeful
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Weak, Clumsy
Roles: Grenadier, Worker

You either keep Josef because you NEED 2 grenadier at the beginning and later abandon him or you let him die in Moscow. I kept him until Chapter 6, when I had to abandon him for more useful people, and I did with heavy heart because he ranked up extremely quickly as Engineer and Worker. In overall though, is a doomed guy.

Prokop Sysel [3/5] - Not the sharpest worker in the train

Character: Loyal
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Focused, Slow-witted
Roles: Worker

He isn't bad, and if you hadn't numbered spaces at the beginning would be worth saving, but you will eventually get other people better than him. Nothing stop to try to get him.

Roman Palacky [1/5] - Who cares? Not him

Character: Indifferent
Belief: Religious
Nature: Insomniac, Jinx
Roles: Worker

He's one one of the few who don't give a f**k if other dies, so no morale loss, but he doesn't have anything that make him worth saving.

Viktor Severa [5/5] - I'm too valuable to die for a script!

Character: Thief
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Burglar, Herbalist, Kind-hearted
Roles: Doctor

Perhaps the only REALLY worth saving. While Thrill-seeker and Kind-hearted clash to each other, but they make him able to rank up faster on mission, while being offset on train as Doctor. I see no downsides.

Vit Kuklik [2/5] - Can't level fast enough

Character: Generous
Belief: Communist
Nature: Intelligent, Sickly
Roles: Engineer

This guy would be a nice addition, but he seems unable to get a promotion. Too bad for him.
Chapter 1-2: Sukhinichi
The second mission. If you don't forget them somewhere, it shouldn't be hard get them. All of them are nice additions.

Alfred Kraus [4/5] - You need me, but you gonna suffer for it

Character: Avaricious
Belief: Communist
Nature: Burglar, Jinx, Slow-witted
Roles: Scout, Worker

Alfred is an alright scout, essential in the beginning, but he just can't shine later on. He extremely useful as merchant and paired with Magdalena to explore abandoned villages, but compared to Maximilian he's a notch down. His Jinx trait increase the risk of accidents (I got 3 people injured and one got tubercolosis for his presence), so while he's useful, you have to expect the worse

Alzbeta Vybiralova [3/5] - Organizational disorder

Character: Diligent
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Kind-hearted, Chaotic
Roles: Medic, Doctor

Alezbeta is a mixed bag, her Diligent trait offset the Chaotic one to a -5% of efficency, adding being Kind, she have +15% as train Doctor, while being an average field Medic. I see her more useful in the crafting side of the medical car.

Dusan Hudecek [4/5] - What Fight Club?

Character: Aggressive
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Brawler, Loose Cannon
Roles: Grenadier, Worker

Multiclassing him as both Grenadier and Rifleman will make your best melee legionary. Avoid making him a Machine Gunner, or make him use any weapon with high rate of fire, as he will waste more ammo for less hits.
Chapter 2: Moscow Aftermath
These will be the Legionaries that will join you after Moscow: 4 if they survived the field mission, and the rest to fill up your train.
Thanks to Donic about two more Legionaries available after Moscow and on how get them.
Originally posted by Donic:
I tested this a number of times. There is a table of 12 soldiers you can get after the Moscow mission. The game gives you x number of soldiers based upon how many people you bring out of the Moscow mission. Kvapilek is #9, Polacek is #10, Alois Tkadlecek is #11. And Korb is #12 on the list.

Thus, to have the last two, you can bring to Moscow only 6 people. In my opinion, your first 4 (Antonin, Bedrich, Magdalena and Maximilian) are your essential. The last two slot are for Alfred (you need that Avaricious trait) and your personal choice. Among all available, for me Viktor is the more versatile/useful, but choose on what you are planning for the future.

Alois Tkadlecek [-/5] -

Character: Humorous
Belief: Communist
Nature: Well trained, Resilient
Roles: Machine gunner, Worker

To be Added

Bartolomej Kvapilek [5/5] - Our own Rasputin

Character: Entertainer
Belief: Religious
Nature: Charismatic, Burglar, Chaotic
Roles: Medic, Doctor

His Chaotic trait make him somwhat less useful in the train, while he will extremely useful outside as Medic. By having both Charismatic and Burglar, you can bring him and not have to worry for secret chests around the map. I say he's a must have.

Dominik Jicha [3/5] - Totally blank

Character: Austere
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Tough, Vigorous
Roles: Scout, Doctor

Nothing special, but his traits make him a good soldier for action. A good blank character to develop as you wish.

Frantisek Dvorsky [1/5] - Happy little drunkard

Character: Alcoholic
Belief: Communist
Nature: Weak
Roles: Rifleman, Engineer

If you want the "Drunken Driver" event happen, he's your guy. Even if can be deployed on field, he isn't your guy. But for me he wasn't "bad": in my first playthrough, he was the first to get the Second Lieutenant rank and 6 roles of anyone, and I kept him because I become attached to. But at the beginning he can't offer much, except problems.

Frantisek Korb [-/5] - Bugged Guy

Character: Friendly
Belief: Religious
Nature: Lucky, Weak
Roles: Scout, Engineer

Note - Every time I finish the Moscow mission, the end recap say I get him, but once I load the next chapter, it say I got Frantisek Dvorsky, the drunkard above. I guess the game is bugged or there is something behind the scenes.

Jan Marecek [4/5] - Mustache Contest 2nd place

Character: Caring
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Well-trained, Strong Appetite
Roles: Machine Gunner, Worker

His Well-trained trait make him already a good soldier. Rank him as Machine Gunner and then you can do whatever you want. His appetite isn't such a issue, once you get 30+ Legionaries, is unnoticeable.

Kamil Hadraba [3/5] - The commies will pay

Character: Vengeful
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Strong-willed, Survivalist
Roles: Grenadier, Engineer

Not much to say about Kamil, except that i my playthrough he's rather focused on kill evey red he encounter in events. Beside that, at first better focus him on the train and rise his Engineer role. Later, his survivalist trait will become much more useful.

Kamila Fisherova [2/5] - I can do everything in average

Character: Reckless
Belief: Communist
Nature: Thrill-seeker
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

As Thrill-seeker, she's best used outside the train and the best way to rank her up is trough missions. Beyond that Kamila is a blank soldier with no speciality that can fill any role you need.

Ondrej Mrazek [2/5] - The grumpy uncle

Character: Skeptical
Belief: Religious
Nature: Dexterous, Burglar, Insomniac
Roles: Engineer, Worker

Ondrej is the only train-bound right after Moscow, he's an average engineer, but once he got a promotion, Rifleman or Machine Gunner might be good to pump his stats. Just don't use him on stamina intensive actions and keep him in the locomotive, as he will take longer to recover.

Pavel Polacek [4/5] - Smaller hitbox makes better soldiers

Character: Careless
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Short
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

I'm attached to Pavel because he looks like my uncle and have the same name, can't be helped.
Aside for that, he's a generic action guy due his Thrill-seeker trait that can develop as you like. Be careful, as Careless people are more prone to injury themselves while working on the train (that's why you have safety upgrades) and Pavel got injured thrice, and chances losing something on the field.

Petr Mindas [3/5] - Mustache Contest 1st place

Character: Reckless
Belief: Communist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Charismatic
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

Another blank character more fitting for field duty for his Thrill-seeker trait. His Charismatic trait make him useful to open the Priests chests and to multiclass him as Medic.

Rotislav Hanak [4/5] - My traumatized guy

Character: Loyal
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Sturdy, Clumsy
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

Starting as both Rifleman and Worker allow you to pump him non-stop in both on-board and off-board. Overall decent guy as -1 Dexterity can be ignored.
At the first run I got him traumatized right after Penza, before I could let him do anything, so I have little experience with him on the field.
On the second run he got better, turning into a pretty reliable guy even in the field. +2 value points for him.
Chapter 2-1: Penza
The road is the same. In Penza you get the side mission of liberating the prisoners from the Reds, if you do so you will obtain these people.

Jaromir Spirik [3/5] - Workshop Grampa

Character: Pragmatic
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Intelligent, Weak
Roles: Grenadier, Doctor

Can't say much about him, he's alright but nothing that make him shine. I found him mostly useful in crafting in both the workshop and hospital car.

Jaroslav Vitek [5/5] - Field engineer

Character: Problem-solver
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Surdy, Focused
Roles: Machine Gunner, Engineer

He's got the potential to be useful inside and outside the train. Excellent engineer and useful as multiclass assault.

Ivan Policka [1/5] - I can only cook, and don't have a kitchen

Character: Reckless
Belief: Communist
Nature: Fainthearted, Shortsighted
Roles: Cook, Doctor

You get a Cook, when you don't need one (as the Workshop car is more useful), and a Doctor when the Medic car will come much later. He's train-bound forever because his Fainthearted trait. But "if" you get the Kitchen car he's gonna be your best cook very quickly, or rank him as Doctor, your choice. But honestly, he's borderline useless.

Martin Valasek [3/5] - Scout in Rifleman uniform

Character: Dignified
Belief: Religious
Nature: Eagle-eyed
Roles: Rifleman, Worker

A blank character, but his Eagle-eyed make him already an above-average Rifleman, multiclassing him as Scout is a good strategy.

The Fork
For the Legionaries you will get, choosing North or South is you major issue, because both come with risk and rewards beyond the resources, but also who you gonna get.

North is considered easier, but also will make easier the long therm of your voyage, since it will provide with specialized soldiers with traits that will help to get further resources from Points of Interest, but also will make them rather precious.

In the other hand, the South offer pretty much blank soldier that doesn't shine in any particular area, so less traumatic to lose in a fight, but not much else. Also you don't have to worry to evacuate them (like in Armyaz).

This thought will be updated again, but keep this in mind.
Chapter 2-2: North Route - Kazan
Once reached Kazan, thus choosing the Northen Route, you have the choice to get her:

Vera Moretti [4/5] - Beauty and mind

Character: Caring
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Intelligent, Charismatic
Roles: Medic, Doctor

I'm saying she's a reference of all the Italians from Austrian-occupy territory who found themselves in the same situation as the Czechoslovaks because of her name and surname typically italian, but that's my idea.

If you invest enough time with her, you are going to get the most efficent Medic/Doctor available (since she get +1 Int and Char), but it takes quite a lot time to get there.
Chapter 2-2: South Route - Samara
Once reached Samara, thus choosing the Southern Route, you have the choice to get her:

Bozena Riedlova[3/5] - I'm going to be useful, one day

Character: Loyal
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Strong-willed, Charismatic
Roles: Doctor, Cook

This is problematic. By her traits alone, she's very valuable in the train, and outside once she will took a combat role... and that's the problem.
At Penza you probably choose the Workshop Car (at least I hope so), so she will start get experience only in the Hospital Car, once (or if) you will get it. thus will be train bounded and unable to improve for a while like Ivan Policka.
But once she got the promotion, she's will be a blank character flexible in many roles. Ranking up the Doctor role, then turn her into a multiclass Scout/Medic seems a viable choice.
Chapter 3 North - 1: All Aboard I (Izhevsk)
This is the first of a 3 side missions focused on getting more people aboard. Are optional, but is still early, you need more soldiers and, if you upgraded your 3 infantry cars, you should have room for them. Beside, most of them are rather good!

David Konar [4/5] - Best photo face

Character: Diligent
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Short, Resilient, Herbalist
Roles: Rifleman

His photo is hilarious. Beyond that, there is nothing to complain about him: a blank character with many little bonuses, being a Herbalist and Resilient make less prone to catch illnesses outside the train.

Jakub Sevcik [3/5] - Needs a promotion to shine

Character: Caring
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Dexterious, Herbalist, Sickly
Roles: Worker

Starting with no combat roles at this point is a malus, but once promoted, he can be useful. It's curious that in the same mission you got David, who is better at avoiding illnesses, and Jakub who is have more chances to catch them, while both can fill the same role as Herbalist. And I'll say with this route we got enough Herbalists for the future.

Jan Splichal [3/5] - Give me thrill of f**k off

Character: Arrogant
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Impulsive
Roles: Grenadier

A combat-focused Legionary for his Thrill-seeker trait. Being Arrogant you either make him work alone in crafting and getting a -5% of efficency, or deal with -30% (which is quite a lot).

Ondrej Martinak [2/5] - Complexed guy

Character: Alcoholic
Belief: Communist
Nature: Dexterous, Anxious
Roles: Medic

Another blank soldier who (to me) can't rank up and that should avoid the locomotive (or give company to Frantisek Dvorsky in my case XD). While -1 Will isn't a problem, he just don't shine in anything. This, and the fact at this point you have more suitable people in every aspect.

You can avoid recruit him with no repercussion if you say can't keep a secret, so you don't have kick him out later on.

Stepanka Sramkova [2/5] - Holier than thou

Character: Austere
Belief: Religious
Nature: Resilient, Self-conscious
Roles: Rifleman

Except her illness resistence, is a blank soldier with nothing to make her shine.

Chapter 3 North - 2: All Aboard II (Kambarskiy Zavod)
Emanuel Homolka [5/5] - A man of lot of things

Character: Skeptical
Belief: Religious
Nature: Housekeeper, Herbalist, Clumsy, Kind-hearted
Roles: Medic, Doctor

He's the first guy (If you didn't save Viktor) with 4 Nature traits, Hosekeeper and Herbalist make him good for outside exploration, while his Kind-hearted make him a good Doctor. A slight worse version of Viktor, but still a good addition with little effort.

Note: I don't know if you need a Legionary with a determinate trait to convince him or he joins regardless. If you can confirm me, thanks.
Chapter 3 North - 2: Armyaz
You get these people in the Armyaz mission, after rescuing them from the Town Hall and if you successfully evacuate them.

Antonin Krupala [5/5] - All pros and no cons

Character: Humorous
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Intelligent, Dexterous, Survivalist
Roles: Scout

Giving his traits, you have a natural-born Doctor, but have plenty of room for any other role. He's also useful outside for being a Survivalist.

Miroslav Janda [1/5] - Scared Mouse

Character: Cowardly
Belief: Religious
Nature: Slow-witted
Roles: Medic, Doctor

He's the worst Medic you gonna get, not only start with -1 Intelligence, but will continuosly lose morale for whatever reason. On top of that, he seems extremely slow to rank up as Doctor. I drop him out at chapter 6.

Petr Svoboda [3/5] - Wrong career choice

Character: Careless
Belief: Religious
Nature: Sturdy, Stout
Roles: Scout

He has nothing wrong, but to me, pure scouts are quite glass cannons, and getting easier to hit desn't help. Better switch him to Grenadier or Machine Gunner role and maybe later multiclass him as Scout.

Sara Najlova [2/5] - Better for you to make us a sandwitch

Character: Friendly
Belief: Communist
Nature: Charismatic, Shaky hands
Roles: Rifleman, Cook

Shaky hands give the enemies more time to react, so I'll say Scout role to her is off the table. If you keep her away from the heat of the combat, you get an average support in form of a Medic, but for me she shines in train roles.
Chapter 3 North - 3: All Aboard III (Gogoli)
The whole intro of this mission make you think you gonna get 3 troublemakers, instead you get 2 of the most valuable people available in this route.

Martin Panacek [3/5] - Hard to shine around the others

Character: Arrogant
Belief: Communist
Nature: Impulsive, Clumsy
Roles: Grenadier

The worst guy you get in the event, but not that bad. Make him an Engineer, put him to crafting and you will not regret it. Below average combatant though.

Petr Kolar [5/5] - Mustache Contest 3rd place, & good guy overall

Character: Caring
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Talented, Charismatic
Roles: Scout

His Talented trait will make him rising ranks like nothing, whatever the train role you choose (I suggest Doctor or Engineer first). On the field is less impactful, but it can be overlooked as is another blank soldier to fill your needs.

Roman Sebecek [5/5] - Man of nature

Character: Loyal
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Eagle-eyed, Survivalist, Hunter
Roles: Rifleman

He got all the checks for a Scout... and start as Rifleman! Having 2 of the 3 requirement for bonuses in Forests or Hunting grounds, you just need a Herbalist and someone who need experiece for your hunting squad.
Chapter 3 South - 1: All Aboard I (Aksanovo)
Again, 3 missions focused to get more soldiers, most of them are pretty straightfoward, leaving just a couple of option that I'll explain later.

Roman Kutalek[4/5] - Bless & Curse

Character: Stoic
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Lucky, Survivalist, Jinx
Roles: Scout, Rifleman

He can be both your lucky charm in missions or turn into an another Alfred Kraus and put some people in the Hospital Car. It's a high risk-reward situation.
This is underlined by his Survivalist trait, as you will have to send him to hunting grounds and forests.
He will resist at any horror you may face, but yeah, just don't put him with people you need in the near future.
Chapter 3 South - 2: All Aboard II (Zlatoust)
Now, you are given a choice to give 2 Medical Kits or board two injured soldiers. Just give them, otherwise you will need either 2 First Aid Kits or move 2 people in the Medical Car for a while.

Andrea Martinova [2/5] - Better into brake things than make them

Character: Careless
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Clumsy
Roles: Machine Gunner, Engineer

I feel her Engineer role was give just to see how much she can mess in the Workshop Car. Thrill-seeker is a flat -15% efficiency in train roles, adding Careless mean that without safety upgrades she will hurt herself often. I don't know if Clumsy can affect it too, but I'm not gonna risk it.
Better let her rank up by breaking communists on the field.

Bobes Rotemberg [3/5] - Violence is my language

Character: Aggressive
Belief: Communist
Nature: Thrill-seeker, Loose Cannon
Roles: Machine Gunner, Rifleman

First thing, take that machinegun away from his hands: same as Dusan Hudcek, he will waste more ammo for less hit, and rank him as Rifleman instead and later as Grenadier.
Another below-average field soldier to keep away from automatic weapons (so even Tier 3 Rifle is a no-go).

Jiri Krupala [3/5] - I do not look like a soldier, but I am

Character: Skeptical
Belief: Religious
Nature: Charismatic, Anxious
Roles: Rifleman, Cook

He's a Rifleman, so ranking him up will offset his -1 Willpower, no big deal here. Other than that, might be good multiclass him as a Medic/Doctor and forgetting his Cook role (we have enough of them by now). Nothing else can be said for him.

Vladimir Kolousek [1/5] - We already left to die people like you

Character: Ruthless
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Slow-witted, Self-conscious
Roles: Scout, Cook

You probably left to die Johan Kocourek at Moscow, but wait! Here's another one! He's not an Entertainer, but at least he start with a combat role. It's a saving grace from a rather bad blank soldier.
Ignore the Cook role and keep improving his combat roles, if you think it's worth: Machine Gunner or Rifleman are good call for him.
Chapter 3 South - 3: All Aboard III (Miass)
In this mission there will be a discussion and a chance to leave behind the communist character. Considering she's the most useful from the 4, better convince her to join.

Jan Kalous [3/5] - Is my hat too big or my shoulders too small?

Character: Aggressive
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Resilient, Stout
Roles: Machine Gunner, Engineer

Not a horrible character, but definitely not great. Pretty average in combat as Stout shouldn't be a problem if you don't let the enemy shoot him (you have a machinegun ffs), and nothing that improve his train roles. But, there isn't never enough Engineers so he's welcome.

Katerina Urbanova [4/5] - Look too badass to stay in the kitchen

Character: Pragmatic
Belief: Communist
Nature: Focused
Roles: Grenadier, Cook

A blank soldier, but rank 3 Grenadier and a trait that make her shine on the train. Wait to unlock a new role and give her something more useful, like Engineer or Worker. Not a bad addition overall.

Leona Hrablova [1/5] - Problem solver, but not for my attributes

Character: Problem-solver
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Weak, Self-conscious
Roles: Medic, Doctor

Another handicapped character to change. Like our previous Vladimir Kolousek, but it affect her cobat role. Not useless, but you already got better Medics and Doctors around so you may not even invest the effort to improve her. Still, better to have someone who can fill some train role while other get some rest.

Vaclav Cajthaml [1/5] - Not scared to dirt my hands

Character: Pacifist
Belief: Religious
Nature: Anxious
Roles: Cook, Worker

What is this route with Cooks??
Anyway, a pacifist so no combat role for him, but still better than Ivan Policka. Why? He's got the Worker role, thus can be put to work straight away, likely in the Locomotive, to get some experience and rank up plus he allow to free more useful soldiers. A little step up in any case.
Chapter 6-1: Canyon
Note: I have to get another run to be sure you always get these Legionaries from Chapter 6 and foward, and I dropped 2 people before thinking about this guide, so meanwhile, here the lucky people managed to jump in.

Roles:

Samuel Misik [5/5] - Do you like mushrooms?

Character: Arrogant
Belief: Religious
Nature: Herbalist, Hunter
Roles: Machine Gunner

If you didn't get Roman, you have another chance to have a man for hunting/gathering trips. His arrogant trait is a step below than Roman, but you should have enough people for crafting that it doesn't matter and use him only for missions.

Vojtech Konecny [4/5] - I can always be useful

Character: Austere
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Focused, Impulsive, Housekeeper
Roles: Rifleman

Housekeepers are always welcome for more scavenging parties, even more if can be also useful inside the train. He's another blank character to develop as you like
Chapter 6-2: Czech rail Uber
Flip Vymyslicky [5/5] - The chunky sniper

Character: Team Player
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Focused, Hunter, Stout
Roles: Scout, Worker

I love his name. As I said previously with Petr, Stout and Scout don't mix well, but he arrives as Rank 4 Scout, so no point for complaining now. He's very useful inside the train, as Team player and Focused can get +15% efficency and morale boost for working with others, and even if alone, it get offset to a +5% so no downsides. The only complain is he arrives quite late.

Ludvik Kraus [2/5] - At least I'm more useful

Character: Stoic
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Focused, Fainthearted
Roles: Cook, Worker

He's an improved version of Ivan. He's Stoic, so he can avoid event-related traumas, and his Focused trait increase his efficency. At this point though, Ivan would be a rank 5 Cook on the way for something else, making Ludvik redundant.

Oldrich Kohout [2/5] - Grumpy plain guy

Character: Ruthless
Belief: Religious
Nature: -
Roles: Medic, Doctor

Having no traits I have nothing to say. Rank 2 Medic, rank 4 Doctor, you get nothing more, nothing less.

Stepan Motak [5/5] - Craftmaster

Character: Diligent
Belief: Monarchist
Nature: Focused, Shortsighted
Roles: Grenadier, Engineer

A straight +25% efficency in whatever train role you give him is something you would have paid earlier on. Being also rank 4 Grenadier can also help on the battlefield, the Shortsighted thing is almost imperceptible.
Chapter 7: A lonely Woman at the Station
At this point, anyone who shows up will be likely rank 5 in some role. Being basically at the end of the journey is up to you what to do.

Dorota Vlckova [5/5] - Vengeful valkyrie

Character: Vengeful
Belief: Nationalist
Nature: Dexterous, Eagle-eyed, Hunter
Roles: Scout

She arrived at the train as rank 5 Scout. If she wasn't already at max, she have all the traits for a good one. Be free to get some other role to experiment.

I hope that's alright. If it's not let me know and I'll take it down.

Personally I'm running Valkyrie squad alongside with Bedrich and Kamil (and Bartolomew on occasion).
Workshop is often run by Rostislav, medical vagon is being run by our fighting lady doctors Magdalene and Elisabeth with Anne helping out whenever needed. (mainly because most injuries are work, not combat related, prolly cus fighting is performed by complete scout squad) and everybody rotates on cooking duty, where coffee or pot research are the major things to do.

If anybody wonders why only scouts, its because of their fantastic alfa strike, where one special ability/shot can send any Ivan to his grave and if more of them target the same thing, it is no problem at all to send even heavy tank lil early straight to scrapyard. With a lil bit of timing and placement it is possible to eradicate each and every single red on the map fairly easily even in last mission.

Apparently the order of the Moscow soldiers changed at some point. It's now:

#9: Bartoloměj Kvapílek
#10: Pavel Poláček
#11: Alois Tkadlecek
#12: František Dvorský

That is, František Korb and František Dvorský have swapped places, presumably so everyone gets two sober train drivers.

A take-home that remains the same is that you really don't want to take more than 9 soldiers into Moscow, because the original train crew doesn't have a #10 more valuable than Kvapilek; Viktor Severa gives you a replacement Burglar, but it's nice to have two of them who aren't either committed to driving the train (Mrázek) or Jinxed (Alfréd Kraus). Poláček is also a very strong asset, so you want to think twice before replacing him (probably with Anna Davidová--Talented is nice, but Thrill-seeker is better, because combat role XP are harder to come by). And even Tkadlecek is a very solid soldier, though probably not any better than whomever you want to take in your #8 slot.

Indeed you get Alois Tkadlecek and Frantisek Korb when leaving Moscow with 6 of your chosen crew. Even if you start with 8 and let 2 of them die in a futile assault against the armoured cars (sorry guys)

The legionairies bio becomes expanded at some point in the demo and I guess some point during or after finishing the game.

You can read what happens to them after Vladivostok.
Dare say should have left some behind....

"Rotislav Hanak" should be "Rostislav Hanak" (in case someone will be searching).

Where did you get the portraits from? I'm trying to find larger-size ones because I want to run a TTRPG version of this game for my buddies.
