Step One: Learning Our Shapes
We first start out with our rectangle of an ingot:

We want to turn the rectangle into a triangle. To do this we want to shape one of these points:

Take the hammer and hit the point until it starts flattening out. Giving the ingot a more roundish shape (Almost like a fat knife-head):
Step Two: Getting To The Point
Give it a few hits in different locations as you flatten it, so that you spread the metal out evenly as you go. You should end up with something like so:
Step Three: Extending Our Swords
Keep going with this method to slowly make the sword longer and the width shorter:
Helpful Hint: Fixing A Curvy Sword
Do not worry if your sword forms a curve:

Take out the small hammer and slowly reshape it after you get the length:
Step Four: Cut To Length
Once you get your sword splendidly shaped. Cut some of the bottom end to fit your specs, maybe even get fancy and cut out the grip part for the hilt:
Helpful Hint: How to Whet Your Sword
You can increase the sharpness of your sword by using it on the Grindstone even if it looks shiny.
Note: Not sure if this is an exploit, but using metal on the Grindstone in weird angles increases the sharpness a lot.
You can then make it look good after by sharpening it the way you want the grooves:
Step Five: You're The Blacksmith Now Dog
Congratulations! You can now make a pointed sword (or dagger in my case) without feeling lame about cutting your precious, precious metals! Now pretty'em up and voilà:

Here is a sword created with this method:

I made the observation that strong swings with the hammer can reduce the area the metal covers if done repeatedly. So maybe that could help.

Every time I try to smite the ingot, it always ends up too small. Is there any way to fix it?
