Tower of London (World Wonder)

After William the Conqueror achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, he constructed fortifications at the north bank of River Thames. The castle was later referred to as the Tower of London, named after its central keep, the White Tower, constructed in 1078. The Tower of London had served many purposes, ranging from royal residence, arsenal, royal mint, menagerie, public records office - and most notoriously, a prison for those lost in court intrigues and power struggles. Some inmates like Anne Boleyn and Jane Grey were executed in the Tower of London, while the two Princes in the Tower simply disappeared after being sent to the castle. Yet, there were also a few fortunate enough to live long and leave the castle, most notably Princess Elizabeth, later coronated as Queen Elizabeth I. In modern times, the Tower of London serves a new purpose as a tourist attraction (just like many other castles in the world), though it still maintains a few traditions that have lasted for centuries. The tradition of keeping ravens, for example, could date back to the 17th century, stemmed from the belief that if the ravens are lost, so does the country.
