You can switch ammo types any time up to the last instant during the reload cycle, so for a revolver, switching the ammo on the side that's reloading can often be the easiest.
Presently, however, you do have to issue a firing order to change ammo type, so if you don't have an immediate target, you'll typically do it by queuing a firing order off in a random direction, then immediately cancelling it.
The short cycle requires you to think two steps ahead, and to already intuitively understand exactly what your bulker will do when you issue the orders, or you can get your ship hopelessly tangled up. If you don't have the understanding from practicing the long cycle, it'll be much more difficult to figure out where you're going wrong, why your bulker got stuck at a weird angle, or why you're wasting firing time with overshoots on every roll.
So I tried to teach the journey, not just the end result :-)
Definitely an interesting build to use.
