Welcome - this guide will be updated FREQUENTLY

Sometimes, a problem occures with Skyrim, and you have difficulties to find a solution.
Here, we will explaine how we deal with those issues.

When having issues with your game, always walk through this list:

  • What mods (if any) are you running? Or have you been running?
  • Do the mods require the DLC's or not?
  • Has the game EVER worked properly?
  • If yes, what's changed since it last worked properly?
  • Have you verified your game's cache?
  • Have you tried a clean install with no mods?
  • Does your system meet the minimum requirements for Skyrim?
  • Are your drivers up to date?
  • Is your game a legal copy?
  • Do you use the right shortcut after a clean install to launch Skyrim?

Most problems are mod related, that is why we had mods 1 by 1 and set our loadorder. ALWAYS test your game after adding a mod.

This guide was made with members from

CTD

CTD is the abbreviation for Crash To Desktop.

What cause a CTD?
  • Wrong loadorder
  • Incompatible mods
  • Leftovers from (most of all) wrongly deleted mods
  • Missing files
  • To much memory use
  • Wrong ENB
Probably there are many more, but these are the most common issues I had.

Deleting mods
When you don't want to use a mod, or your last mod makes your game ctd, you need to uninstall them.

Rodolfo Iglesias explaines here how to delete mods manually.

Avoiding CTD - LOOT and BOSS

You can avoid CTD's by putting the mods in the right loadorder.
  • Use LOOT [loot.github.io] or BOSS [boss-developers.github.io] for making the right loadorder. LOOT is preferable.
NOTE: when downloading, use the ARCHIVE!

Just a simple little "fix" I stumbled upon in my time wandering the plains of Whiterun and serving time in Riften Jail.

Just a simple little "fix" I stumbled upon in my time wandering the plains of Whiterun and serving time in Riften Jail.

What problem is this going to help with?

This little workaround I've stumbled upon is going to help you with those infuriating crashes you get when you load a save after adding or removing mods (or anytime Talos just won't let you in). This method will ensure that when you load your previous save the game won't try to load assets or use scripts which don't exist anymore

Enough waffling!

This little fix is as simple as just starting a new game and then loading your previous save from the new game, it's as simple as that! I have used this method countless times and it's worked before! I'm kidding, I guarantee this will fix 80% of your problems while modding the beast that is Skyrim!
Recommended mods
  • The wonderful Safety load[www.nexusmods.com] is going to ensure that Skyrim doesn't spoil the fun after all your hard work
  • I would highly recommend you only use this fix if you have Alternate start[www.nexusmods.com] which skips the the horsecart and Helgen scene at the beginning make this process much faster.
  • While you're at it check out my simple mods because why not!
Infinite Loading Screen bug and game freezing during play

Rather than an error of load, "Infinite Loading Screen" is caused by an error in memory allocation.
This mod modify the function of memory allocation and block all freezing due to memory allocation failure.

This mod changes memory allocation, it is dependent on your PC (OS, 32or64bit, memory size etc.).
If you have no problem after Installation, Congratulations! You got all the features.

If you have any problem after Installation (CTD when open menu, get more CTD or freeze, graphical glitch etc.), please try:
"EnableOnlyLoading = true" in data/SKSE/Plugins/SafetyLoad.ini.
This means that it can not block game freezing during play except loading screen.

If you still got problems after setting .ini, you cannot use this mod... Sorry.

When you install many mods or large textures, animation of loading screen will be stopped sometimes.
However, the game will continue to load in the background. Please wait.
You can check it is infinite loading or not by using "Skyrim Performance Monitor", "Windows Task Manager" etc.
When the memory usage or Disk I/O has changed, game is running.
** OSD information is not usable because it is stop with loading screen. **

Infinite Loading Screen happens for several reasons:
  • Broken saveGame
  • Memory shortage
  • When game loads many object/texture data

If detect broken saveGame, this mod writes error to a logfile (data/SKSE/Plugins/SafetyLoad.log) and stop game (CTD). It would be better than Infinite Loading Screen.

This mod fix "memory allocate function" only, it does not affect the other.
But, it is possible to install a lot of mods, it may malfunction occurs in overload. Be careful.

Fix for incorrect Videocards, D3D9 errors and Renderer related crashes + possible performance gain

Fix for:
-Incorrect Videocards set in the launcher
-D3D9 Errors
-Renderer related crashes

A few clicks will save your game

+possible performance gain

This guide will show you a simple tool which may save your game.
This tool is mostly selfexplanationary, but sometimes people wont understand it.
I will try to explain and guide you.
Please notice, everything i write here is purely from experience using this tool.
The Tool
The tool was originally created for Fallout New Vegas.
Since Skyrim and FNV share the same base engine, the tool can still be used.

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/34970/?
You need a Nexus Account and you need to download "D3D9Gen b3" manually not via the manager.

How it works in detail, is explained by the original creator, AlekseiVasiliev; the kudos and credits for creating this go all to him. Not to me.

The tool will create a custom d3d9.dll. This may interfere with any mod, that adds an own d3d9.dll, most likely an ENB mod.

A user reported, that the .dll also increases his performance. This proves what AlekseiVasiliev said about increased performance.
How to use the tool
Once downloaded you need to unrar/unzip/whatever just get the files it. You should place a folder called "D3D9Gen b3" on your desktop with all the files from the archive in it.

Depending on your system:
-x32 systems use D3D9Gen (.jar)
-x64 systems use D3D9Gen_x64 (.jar)

Run (Double click) the .jar you need/want.
You will see a small window with 3 options:

-Set videocard by a list
---The list is pretty small, but if you are lucky you may find your videocard already. If so, skip to the
--- step "Once created".

-Set videocard by text
---You need to write down your videocard.
---Examples:
------ Nvidia GeForce 7900GS
------ Nvidia GeForce GTX 660
------ Nvidia GeForce 7800 SLI
------ Ati Radeon HD 2350 Series
------ Ati Radeon HD 2400
------ Radeon HD 6800 Series

---------- You need the exact name, the examples here and in the tools list should be enough to find
---------- the correct name. If you make a mistake you can redo the file, dont worry.

-Set videocard by text enables the option "Detect my card"
--- 3 modes are given: Fast, Medium, Slow
--- the modes will autodetect your videocard, the slower the more precise. This may not work if
--- if you have an "Intel HD 4000", or similiar, and a dedicated video card. This may only detect
--- the Intel card.

If you found your videocard, just click on "Generate DLL"

Once generated, you will be notified and the file will be placed in the folder, where the generator is. This should be your "D3D9Gen b3" folder on your desktop.
The generated d3d9.dll needs to be placed in your skyrim install folder, where tesv.exe is.
The default folder is:
Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim

If you placed the .dll in your skyrim folder, check the launcher. It should have your videocard rehistered correctly. You may need to delete "rendererinfo.txt" from documents/mygames/skyrim folder. This .txt will be recreated.

Your game should work fine now.
Last words
Remember, this guide is written from experience with the tool.
If it doesnt work, dont blame me or AlekseiVasiliev.

If you find any grammar mistakes, meh me no english.

Any suggestion regarding improvements are welcome, if there is a large demand for images i will add some, even though the tool has only one window and everyone should know at least how a Windows looks.

Now happy skyriming, fight well or die well.

Dirt when you are vampire
Next screenshot is an EXAMPLE. Click on it to see negative effect

When you become vampire, you will notice that your face is full of dirt. It can NOT be removed by Racemenu, nor can you use more sliders.
Do NOT panic: this is caused by being a vampire. Racemenu seems not able to handle that.
For the dirt, I have found a simple solution:

Dawnguard Vampire Lord reverse transformation Face fix.

Just transform into vampire lord, transform back and your face is clean again.
Optimizer texture
Optimizer texture [www.nexusmods.com]

Features:
----------------------------------------------------------------
- Compress BMP, TGA, DDS (unoptimized) to DXT5 and DXT1
- Remove unused mask in DXT5/DXT3 to DXT1c without losing quality, reducing 50%
- Make mipmaps to improve performance
- Delete unnecessary files (identical BMP=TGA=DDS, thumbs.db, pspbrwse.jbf, ...)
- Resize fills to 4x4 or 16x16
- Fix Wrong Size - Example: 100x30 => 128x32
- Fix when the alpha channel is hiding an image
- Optionally resize textures
- Optimizer BSA (Compress, Merge internal files)
- Backup changed files

consequently:
- decreases some stuttering
- fixes crash/CTD caused by bursting of VRAM
- freedom hard disk space / reduces the size of the MOD

================================================================
Usage:
----------------------------------------------------------------
- Extract "Optimizer_Textures_xxx.rar" to a folder
- Run "Ordenador.exe"
- Click in button "plugin/data files" to point the Folder of Game, DATA or TEXTURES.
- Optional: First Tab (optimize), choose one presets
- Press "start" ... Go for a coffee, or two ...
- Done! :)

Same Care
----------------------------------------------------------------
1) It does automatic backup "C:\Backup Textures", check for free space, approximately 1 Gb to textures and 4Gb if optimize BSA.
2) Rare cases in which you face (no npc) can be distorted. reason: Installing MODs with Facegens not in a folder FaceGen on games in progress. correction: in the game console to do open and close "showracemenu".
3) this application works perfectly and does not cause any breaks in the game (CTD) but to secure it makes automatic backup. to do restore the backup, the textures are in RAR or 7zip and BSA just delete the extension files ".000.bak (eg "pacote.bsa.000.bak" to "pacote.bsa") and put back in the game folder.

================================================================
Requirements:
----------------------------------------------------------------
- .NET Framework 4.0
- MSVCR2010 32bits or MSVCR2010 64bits

Btw, the link also includes a playlist that teaches you how to use The Nexus ( install the mods that lies on there). It is a much better (again, in my oppinion) modding community than the steam workshop, this coming from a guy who didn't switch over from steam until litterally a week ago...XD
purpers 22 Oct, 2014 @ 5:48am
In my oppinion, NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) is much better at handling mods for skyrim... Here is a complete tutorial on how to install it properly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClqtmSUsFhg&list=TLoCRhtiEaL5Zw_SpD-ix7EZaDbNsQqw4S Some things have changed, for example you go to the install page bu clicking the link TO THE RIGHT of the search bar- but any person with a decent level of intelligence can figure it out. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, just want to give you guys an alternative to the other Mod Manager's that's listed above. Again, the other managers might seem better to you- but since there is no absolute answer to which one is best, I want to give you an alternative that (in my oppinion) is at least as good- if not better.
