Trail events, options and outcomes
By Lotte
Another guide trying to describe the different events, outcomes and which of those outcomes add entries to the journal. I think I have all the events of the game in this guide now, if I missed some let me know! I'm also missing some outcomes, but it's mostly complete. I will update this with better info and more events if I find them. Hopefully it's useful for other people!

Info
Why even make this guide? I thought it could be useful to have a guide with pictures and the exact text uttered by the character to make it easier to find events. I also think it would be nice to have the different outcomes of events summed up while I'm trying the find the last few journal entries which are still unknown how to get them. This way we can rule stuff out. If you've had another outcome or an event not mentioned in the guide, let me know!

Behind the journal entries I will put the name of entry as found in your save file for extra information. This way I might find out what the names of the missing events are (I found the complete list of events in the game files). You can find your save file in this location:
C:\Users\%username%\Saved Games\TheRedLantern\Profiles
If you open the file with Notepad or Notepad++ or something similar you will see which events you have completed in your runs (they are in chronological order).

I'm not going to list the location entries of the journal, as they are common enough and pretty much unmissable anyway (and I also forgot to take pictures of them). The official names of these entries are:
obj_seeplains
obj_seeforest
obj_frozenlake
obj_riverrun
obj_seecoast
obj_findhome
Tips & tricks
  • If you're wondering whether you can quit your current run and keep your journal entries, you can! If you've gotten a journal entry that run and want to quit your run for any reason (maybe to avoid completing one of the dogs' stories), just choose "End Current Run" and the journal entries gained in that run will remain in your journal.

  • Pay extra attention while doing Barkley's story. The first event ("Oh hey... a little wolf friend.") has an option to throw meat to the wolf and gain a journal entry. As soon as you have finished Barkley's story, this option is no longer available. Therefore this journal entry is highly missable!

  • The same goes for Noodle's story. When following the story you have the option to free the wolf from the trap ("Noodle, are you trying to bring it closer or keep it away?" event) for a journal entry. This event is also no longer available after finishing his story.

  • Try to delay finishing Chomper's story. Chomper's first story event spawns the squirrel event "Oh great, a squirrel.". This event is still possible to get even without doing Chomper's story, but it is guaranteed when following his story. This event can give you both a journal entry, achievement, and a follow-up event with yet another journal entry. It might be wise to get these first before finishing Chomper's story.
--- Tools, resources and misc ---
Tools
These events will only happen if you don't have the respective tool yet. If you've picked up the tool the event can no longer trigger.

I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable running on top of water.

There are some fishing racks on your side, choose "Check it out." and then choose to take the fishing pole to receive the fishing pole. This will allow you to fish at certain events. You also get a chance to try it out right away and if you do so you will get the journal entry for catching a fish (you can also get this entry later in one of the other events).
Journal entry: caught a fish! - I am patient now. (obj_fishednewplace)

There are so many tree stumps over there.

If you see the tree stumps and choose to "Check it out." you can pick up the axe. This tool will allow you to take bark from birch trees without losing extra energy. If will also allow you to open abandoned cabin doors or collect extra meat in certain events. You can try it out right away to take a piece of birch bark with you.

Any idea what that is?

You will see an abandoned camp to the side of the trail and when you choose to "Check it out." you will find the fire starter. This will allow you to start fires without using any birch bark.

Leave the detritus. Who knows what's on the other side of this pile.

You will find a bag ripped open by a bear but still full of dog racing equipment. You can take the dog booties for your own dogs. This will make them fill up two bars of energy for every piece of meat they're fed instead of the one bar before.

What do you guys smell?

"Let the dogs follow the scent." after they smell something and you will find a trap you can take with you. You can set the trap in your camp before going to sleep and you will catch something small that will give you one meat. If you have Stilton on your team you can let him choose the location for the trap and you will catch more and receive two meat instead.

Why don't we just curl up in there?

If you decide to "Check it out." you will break into the cabin with your axe and find a gun cleaning kit. You will use this kit and from now on you will harvest more meat from every animal you kill.
Birch trees
Hey! Those look like birch up ahead.

If you choose to "Check it out." you can collect some birch bark. If you have found the axe, it will not cost any energy. If this is your first time, it will give you a new journal entry.
Journal entry: succesfully identified a birch tree. (obj_aspenbirch)

It's nice not being desperate for birch bark. I like knowing we can always start a fire.

I think this event can only trigger when you've found the fire starter. You can collect some birch bark here again, without losing extra energy with the axe. I'm not even sure if it's possible, but if this is your first birch tree you get the journal entry.
Journal entry: succesfully identified a birch tree. (obj_aspenbirch)

Looks like we have a lone birch tree up ahead, pups.

Another possibility to collect some birch bark. It won't cost extra energy if you have the axe with you. You get the journal entry if you haven't collected bark before.
Journal entry: succesfully identified a birch tree. (obj_aspenbirch)

Looks like we've found some birch trees.

You can collect some birch bark here just the previous events.
Journal entry: succesfully identified a birch tree. (obj_aspenbirch)
Bullets
Something is over there.

You will see a red rag on the side of the trail and if you choose either option you will find a little stash with one or two bullets in it. You can also find a med pack instead.

What is that?

You will see a glove on a rock. "Check it out." and you will discover a jacket with a bullet in one of the pockets.

You pups see that?

You will see a shimmer on the rocks next to you and if you "Check it out." you will find a pack of bullets with one or two still inside of it.
Fishing
I can't believe the ice can just control a river of this size.
You can fish here if you choose "Try to fish" (and if you have found the fishing rod) for some meat. If you have not fished before, this will also give a journal entry.
Journal entry: caught a fish! - I am patient now. (obj_fishednewplace)

Looks like there's a good fishing spot up there.

You will spot a hole in the ice and notice you could fish there. Choose "Try to fish." to fish there. You ask Chomper to come with you and afterwards you give him pets. If you have not caught a fish before you will get a journal entry for it.
Journal entry: caught a fish! - I am patient now. (obj_fishednewplace)
Med pack
It looks like there's something out there.

Choose to "Check it out." and you will find a med pack on the ground to take with you.
Cabin events
These all start the same but have different outcomes so they don't really fit in another category.

Ok, so there's just a creepy abandoned cabin sitting over there. Um...

You will see an abandoned cabin on the side of the trail. Choose to investigate one way or another and there will be a few different outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: You will find a med pack.

  • Outcome 2: You will find a squirrel.

Option 1: Let's talk this out.
The squirrel will get angry (but not attack you) and you will get a journal entry.
Journal entry: I will learn to speak squirrel (obj_squirrelcabin) (this is an entry for the squirrel)

    Option 2: Raise rifle.
You shoot the squirrel but there won't be any meat to harvest.

  • Outcome 3: You will find a bear.

Spoiler: It's not stuffed. You will get injured. Journal entry!
Journal entry: Bears need homes too (obj_bearcabin) (this is an entry for the bear)

  • Outcome 4: You will find... snow. The cabin is empty.

  • Outcome 5: You will find some bullets. (Haven't had this one myself yet, so no pictures.)

  • Outcome 6: You will find nothing, but decide to salvage the table for some bark.
Hallucinations
These events are quite rare and I think you can only see them if you are tired.

Um, why would someone just put a door out here?

You will see a door on the trail which opens to show... just snow. There are no interactions and you just continue racing.

Wait a minute, you're not supposed to be out here.
(possibly only triggers if Slayer is on your team)

You see a manhole cover which you decide is impossible... before it disappears.

Might be a nod to the conversation you had with Slayer after adopting her about you being afraid too, in your case of manhole covers.
Miscellaneous
I'm not sure I actually like traveling on this ice.

This is the second part of Bodega's story. You need to be on a lake or possibly a river for this event to trigger. There are no choices, Bodega saves the team out of the water, eats a piece of meat as a reward, you become cold and the team continues the journey.

You pick up the scent of something?

This is Fin's second story event, and it can occur after finishing her story as well. She will lead you to something buried in the ground. This can be a piece of bark or one or two bullets (maybe a med pack as well?).
--- Animals ---
Bear
Aww, a little bear cub!

You will see the cutest little bear cub in front of you and of course you can't resist getting closer so naturally you choose to "Let's follow it and see." and then you have some more options.

Option 1: Let's watch and see what happens.
You wait and this can lead to a few different outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: From the left of the screen mama bear arrives and gives the little cub a kiss. This is a journal entry.
Journal entry: The cutest snoop boop (obj_bearboop)

  • Outcome 2: Mama bear arrives from the right of the screen and is angry. You will get attacked, injured and get a journal entry for it.
Journal entry: There's always a mama bear somewhere (obj_bearmomattack)

  • Outcome 3: You witness the little cub scratching itself on the tree. This is both a journal entry and an achievement.
Journal entry: I wonder if I need a scratching tree (obj_beartreescratch)
    Achievement: Discovered the scratching tree

  • Outcome 4: Mama bear arrives from the back of the screen and you decide it's better to leave.
Option 2: Seems like time to hunt.
You shoot the bear cub and harvest some meat.😥

Ok, bear, just move along. We'd like to come through here...

There will be a bear blocking your way.

Option 1: I'll shoot him.
You try to shoot the bear. If it succeeds you get some meat and if it fails you will get injured and the bear steals meat.

Option 2: Let me distract him.
You throw a piece of meat to distract the bear. You lose a piece of meat but this is always guaranteed to succeed.

Option 3: Run?
You get injured and the bear steals some meat. If you don't have any meat, the bear will attack and you and Chomper will get injured. You then have two options, but they seem to have the same outcome (an elk shows up and the bear decides to hunt that instead of you).

---

Your team gets attacked by a bear and you will get injured. This event has no options to save yourself. (I only got this event once so not sure if there are other outcomes)
Beaver
Oh god! That could've smashed the river wide open!

You see two trees to the left of you and one of them falls down right before your eyes. You can choose "Check out the fishing hole." to get the options seen here below, or you can "Hunt the beaver.". That will either result in a tree falling on top of you (and getting injured) or if you succesfully dodge the tree you can shoot the beaver.

(Not sure if this gives the same journal entries as if you chose option 2 here below after "Check out the fishing hole.")

Option 1: Try fishing.
You can try to catch a fish here to receive some meat. Just choosing this option (you don't have to be succesful in catching) will get you a new journal entry.
Journal entry: Beavers will lead you to open water (obj_beaverfishing)
If you haven't caught a fish before you will also receive another journal entry.
Journal entry: caught a fish! - I am patient now. (obj_fishednewplace)

Option 2: Look for the beaver.
You can also try to find the beaver and this can result in either succesfully dodging a tree falling on top of you or getting hit by the tree.
  • Outcome 1: If you dodge succesfully you have the option to shoot the beaver or leave. If you leave you will get a notice of a new journal entry but it will not add anything. Might be a bug? Not sure about it. It does add an entry in your save file.
    (obj_beavermeetgreet)

  • Outcome 2: You get hit, and it's one more journal entry.
Journal entry: Beavers have good aim. (obj_beavertreehit)

Woahh!

You see a beaver felling some birch trees and if you choose to "Go after the beaver." there's some more options.

Option 1: Take the birch bark.
You thank the beaver for their hard work and pick up some of the birch bark. You can still choose option 2, 3 or 4 after this

Option 2: Hunt the beaver.
You shoot the beaver and get some meat. You can still choose option 1, 3 or 4 after this. If you miss the shot, you can shoot again or choose one of the other options.

Option 3: Leave
You return to the sled.

Option 4: Fish
You can choose to fish in the hole made by the falling tree.
Caribou
It's far away, but it's here.

You see a caribou in the distance and if you "Check it out." you will go and see if it gets any closer. It does not and walks away, or it comes closer and you can shoot it for some meat.

Looks like we've found someone's dinner.

You will spot a dead caribou on the side of the trail. After "Let's check it out." you have the option to harvest some of the meat (you can harvest more if you have the axe). Do this and there is a chance a wolverine will show up and this gives you a journal entry.
Journal entry: Got made by a wolverine. (obj_wolverinespotsyou) (this is an entry for the wolverine)

Wait, is that a caribou?!...

You will see a caribou quickly run from one side to the other in front of you. Choose "Let's hunt" for a few different outcomes of the situation.
  • Outcome 1: You shoot the caribou, and when you shoot it a second time it dies. You can harvest the meat right away or howl along with your dogs. This does not do anything else as far as I know.

  • Outcome 2: You shoot the caribou, but you let the timer run out the second time you can shoot. A wolf will catch the caribou instead.
Journal entry: That wolf came out of nowhere. (obj_caribougotwolfed)

  • Outcome 3: You shoot the caribou, and when you shoot it a second time (try to shoot a little next to the circle to not kill it) it still lives and runs away.
Journal entry: you have to finish what you start (obj_hurtcaribou)
You can find the caribou again in the "What's that out there?" event to end its suffering (and to get one more journal entry).

What do you smell?

Your dogs will pick up a smell and if you "Follow it." it will lead you to a dead caribou on the edge of a lake.

Option 1: Go get it.
You will slowly walk towards the dead caribou and there is a chance a wolf will come out and attack you. When this happens you get injured and a journal entry.
Journal entry: they don't like it when you try to take their kill (obj_wolvesatlake) (this is an entry for the wolf)

Option 2: Wait and see.
You will wait a while and sometimes a wolf comes out and starts eating the caribou. You can then choose to shoot the wolf and harvest meat from both animals. At other times nothing comes and you can just safely harvest the meat from the caribou.

What's that out there?

This event will be able to appear if you've shot a caribou in another event but didn't kill it. Either the "Wait, is that a caribou?!..." or "You pups see that? It's a caribou!" are so far confirmed to work.

You can finish the poor caribou off or leave it alone. Either way it's a journal entry.
Journal entry: or else they can end up suffering (obj_foundhurtcaribou)

Yawwnnnn.

You see a caribou blocking your path. This is also the third part of Stilton's story, but can happen without him in the team.

You have a few different options here to either shoot or approach, and it will teleport to the left rock. It is a real caribou though, because if you walk towards it you might get run over and get injured. You can also shoot it for some meat.

If you're doing Stilton's event it goes slightly different. If you ask "Stilton, are you seeing this?", the caribou will teleport and Stilton will bark at it. You then have the option to hunt it or leave it alone.

You pups see that?

A caribou on the side of the trail will notice you and run away in a panic. Choose to "Follow it." and you will discover a whole herd of caribou.
Journal entry: I can't believe I saw a whole herd! (obj_caribouherd)

Option 1: Chomper come look at this.
You will show Chomper the herd and Chomper wishes they were giant squirrels. I'm not sure if this is a trigger for anything else. After this option you can choose option 2 or leave.

Option 2: Raise rifle.
You can shoot the closest caribou and get some meat.

You pups see that? It's a caribou!

You can see a caribou on the side of the trail. Choose "Let's watch it" and then "Try a caribou call" for a few options. You can also choose "Hunt it." for a chance to shoot it.

Option 1: Moo.
The caribou either runs away or will get chased away by a moose that heard your calls. There is a chance you have to moo for a second time. If the moose shows up you get a new journal entry.
Journal entry: Time for me to get moooving! (obj_moosechase)

Option 2: Grunt.
The caribou either runs away or will be interested in your calls. If it is, you get a new journal entry. Afterwards you can try to shoot it for some meat.
Journal entry: Succesfully learned to talk to caribou. (obj_calledcaribou)

Option 3: Shriek.
The caribou ran away so far on all my attemps, if it does anything I have not discovered it yet.

Option 4: Hey you!
The caribou will get very startled and run away or it will look confused at you. You can then choose to hunt it or to ask yourself what now and in that case it will run away anyway.

If you chose to hunt the caribou and you don't make a good shot (try to hit a little outside of the circle) the caribou staggers away and you can make a comment on that (and it probably gives the following journal entry but I'm not 100% sure about that).
Journal entry: you have to finish what you start (obj_hurtcaribou)
You can find the caribou again in the "What's that out there?" event to try to finish it off (and to get a journal entry).
Deer
Is there something up there?

You will see a deer standing frozen on a hill. Choose to "Inspect it." and you will come closer and have more options.

Option 1: Approach it.
If you choose to approach the deer you will see that it is actually frozen. If you leave the deer without trying to harvest meat you will get a journal entry.
Journal entry: How long was that deer out there? (obj_deerfrozen)

Option 2: Shoot it.
You will shoot the deer but it will not do anything. You can choose to approach it anyway or leave.

Looks like we've got a chance at a meal, pups.

Choose "Hunt it." for a chance to gain some meat.

This is exactly what we need.

Choose "Hunt it" for some meat (if you manage to kill the deer).

Something is watching us...
(the voice line says "someone" instead of "something")

You have the feeling you are being watched and when you go "Check it out." or "Hunt it." you will find three deer staring at you.

If you choose to "Raise rifle." there is a chance the deer will survive the shot and the other deer will run off. You will get a journal entry for this and you can try to shoot the deer again to finish it off.
Journal entry: Great. Judgmental deer. (obj_deerstare)

Some tips for this journal entry because it is quite hard to get it right. Try while shooting the deer to aim around the edge of the circle (the one you see when shooting something), people have been succesful hitting but not killing the deer this way. You could also try to miss the shot, but by doing so there is a good chance the deer will just run away, so I would recommond trying to hit the edge of the circle (either in or out).
Eagle
Did you see that?! A bald eagle!

If you choose to "Chase it." it will lead you to some new options.

Option 1: Shoot it anyway.
You will kill the eagle and feel guilty about it, but you do have a new journal entry.
Journal entry: Let's not talk about the bald one (obj_eagleshot)

Option 2: Wait.
A rabbit hops into the area and this will give you the option to kill the rabbit. This also gives a journal entry.
Journal entry: Eagles know the best prey zones. (obj_eaglefoodfollow)
Elk
It looks like there's something out there.

An elk is standing on the side of the trail. Choose to "Check it out." for some options.

Option 1: Approach it
You approach the elk and notice that it's shedding its antlers. This will give you a journal entry. There is a chance you will get attacked and become injured.
Journal entry: Night of the living shed (obj_elkshed)

Option 2: Raise rifle.
You will shoot the elk and receive some meat if you manage to kill it.

Looks like we've got another elk watching us.

This is Slayer's final part of her story. Choose "I'm going to check it out." and you can choose to watch or hunt the elk. Slayer will come to "help" but will scare the elk off.

Oh would you look at that... an elk!

This is the first part of Slayer's story. If you go try to check it out Slayer will decide and you won't be able to.

There's another thing with antlers out there!

You will see an elk standing to the side of you. Choose "Let's check it out." for a chance at shooting the animal for some meat.

Uhhh, what was that?

You hear two elk shrieks and are confused about the sound. If you choose to "Let's follow it." you will find the producer of those sounds and this will be both a good lesson and a journal entry.
Journal entry: Going to have to get used to that elk shriek. (obj_elkshrieklearn)

Option 1: Are we going to be friends?
The elk just runs away.

Option 2: You know I'm not a deer, right?
The elk just runs away.

Option 3: Is that my hunting call?
You shoot the elk and get some meat.

This is also the second part of Slayer's story and if you are following her story the event goes a little bit different.

Option 1: I'll scare it away.
You try to scare the elk for Slayer. Slayer comes to help you and together you scare the elk away.

Option 2: I'll shoot it.
Unknown.

Afterwards you can give Slayer some good advice and you're proud of her.

You're a big fella, aren't you?

You see an elk grazing on the side of the trail. Choose "I'm going to check it out." for the following options.

Option 1: Reach out.
You will reach out your hand and this can lead to three different outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: The elk accepts your petting. That of course is worth a journal entry.
Journal entry: I. PET. AN. ELK! (obj_elkpetted)

  • Outcome 2: The elk is scared and runs away. Before it disappears behind the horizon it will let out a bugle and you will comment how majestic the elk is. That is another journal entry.
Journal entry: They're so majestic! (obj_elkcall)

  • Outcome 3: The elk is scared and attacks you. You will get injured.
Option 2: Pull out rifle.
You have the option to shoot the elk for some meat or to leave the scene.
Fox
Can you actually find food like that?

You will see a fox diving into the snow. Choose "I want to see if you can pull this off" to watch the fox dive into the snow again. Keep encouraging it for two outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: The fox is succesful and will catch something.

You have to say "I can conquer this too. Thanks for the inspiration" and after that "Thanks, foxy." or you will not get the journal entry.
Journal entry: That hunting dive is incredible. (obj_foxcatchprey)

  • Outcome 2: The fox fails to catch anything and runs off.
Journal entry: But it takes a lot of patience. (obj_foxwatch)
Moose
Looks like we've found a moose...

Choose "Let's check it out." to get some more options.

You have the option to wait if it comes closer or to shoot right away. If it does come closer you can shoot the moose anyway. It can also run away or attack you if it does come closer and you raise your rifle.

If the moose attacks you you can choose these options. Maybe relevant for one of the missing moose events?

There's something out there...

To the side of the trail you will see a tree shaking, choose "I'm going after it." to find a very large moose you can shoot for a lot of meat.

You can't see anything out there.

Your pups will spot something but you don't see anything. Choose to "Check out." and you will see an albino moose barely visible in the snowy landscape.

Option 1: Hunt it.
You will shoot the albino moose and get some meat. If you miss, the albino moose will attack and injure you.

Option 2: Leave.
This is a pretty unique instance where leaving an encounter actually rewards you. If you leave the rare albino moose alone you will get a journal entry.
Journal entry: Whas that a ghost moose? (obj_moosealbinoadmire)

---

This is Barkley's third and final story part. A moose blocks the path and the sled crashes into the moose. If you taught Barkley how to bark then Barkley will scare the moose off and nothing else happens. (Does something else happen if you didn't teach him how to bark? Not sure about that.)
Owl
Ooh another owl!

This is an event that is the result of following the owl in the "There's an owl nearby somewhere." event, or shooting an owl in any encounter to get "cursed". Choose "Follow it." and you will spot the owl in a tree. The owl will turn red.

The things I did in one run where I triggered this event: Not sleep, got run over by the moose from the "There's an owl nearby somewhere." event, nót seen the good omens owl or the skunk/owl combo, be very passive and only killed one deer and my team was Slayer in the front, Noodle, Fin, Gale and Chomper.

In another one I shot the owl in the "Chomper, don't get any bad ideas." skunk event. I also saw the owl in clear daylight so night is not required.

Option 1: Shoot it.
This action has two outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: You shoot the owl but it disappears into thin air. You then turn around and get run over by yet another moose. This will injure you.

  • Outcome 2: You shoot and kill the owl and say to yourself that curses are imaginary and that fate is in your own hands.
Option 2: Run away.
You return to the sled.

There's an owl nearby somewhere.

You can hear the hoot of an owl but don't see anything. Choose to investigate with "Let's go look for the owl". You will get run over by a moose and get injured. This is not really a happy outcome, but it does give a journal entry and an achievement.
Journal entry: But who "hooted"?! The moose or owl?! (obj_mooseowlseen) (this is an entry for the moose)
Achievement: Cursed by an owl

I'm certain I read that owls are good omens.

You see an owl and ponder if they were good or bad omens.

Option 1: Didn't they mean certain death?
I choose this one if I'm trying to shoot the owl for the journal entry, but I'm unsure if it is actually required.

Option 2: Yeah, owl good things come to those who wait.
I choose this one if I'm trying to get something from the owl pellet but I'm not sure if it actually helps.

After choosing either option 1 or 2 you will get a new set of options.

Option 1: Let's follow it.
This option gets you to into the encounter with the new set of options seen below.

Option 2: Wait, the omen was about victims til light...
I think you decide here that it was a bad omen after all. You have the chance to follow it anyway.

You get into an encounter with two different outcomes (whether you chose good or bad omen maybe?). The owl either has found a birch tree for you or just sits on a rock or tree.

Option 1: Watch the owl./Am I seriously arguing with an owl?
You watch the owl and talk a little to it until it pukes up a pellet. Inspect the pellet and you have chance there is a bullet in it. This will be a journal entry. You can also choose to just shoot it anyway.
Journal entry: I'd dissect an owl pellet again. (obj_owlpellet)

Option 2: Maybe it wants us to eat it./I'm going to shoot you now.
You shoot the owl and this will count as becoming "cursed" and gives you the opportunity to trigger the "Ooh another owl!" event. If you decided that owls were a bad omen in the earlier option it will also be a new journal entry. (Not sure if it is required)
Journal entry: Was that curse real? (obj_owlcursed)

If you've concluded that owls are good omens you will also have a third option.
Option 3: Take the bark from the birch tree.
You can take some birch bark with you and thank the owl for it.
Ox
Look out!

This is the first part of Igloo's story. An ox will charge into your shed. You then get the option to shoot it or yell some more.

Option 1: Shoot it.
Unknown.

Option 2: Keep yelling.
You keep yelling and eventually you will get some options of what to say to the ox. The ox will then attack and injure you but Igloo will help (and also gets injured) and the ox runs off.

Shhh, I've heard bad things about these guys.

You'll see an ox walking on the trail. "Check it out." for more options.

Option 1: Continue watching
Most of the time the ox will run away, but sometimes it will attack you. When this happens you will gain a journal entry.
Journal entry: Ox have the best hairdos. (obj_oxseen)

Option 2: Pull out rifle.
You shoot the ox but it survives. Shoot it again for some meat.
Porcupine
Gale, just leave it. You know what happens.

Third part of Gale's story. You will encounter another porcupine.

Option 1: Ok. Stare away.
Gale gets even closer. You don't have the time for this and you both leave the porcupine alone.

Option 2: Come on, Gale. Time to go.
You leave the encounter.

Option 3: I'm going to kill you now.
Gale gets even closer. Luckily a bunny appears and you shoot the bunny instead.

Gale, slow down there's something up there...

This is the first part of Gale's story. She will go after a porcupine and get her face full of quills (she won't be injured).

I think there's something in that tree...

This is the second party of Gale's story. Choose to "Check it out." for more options. This will also give you a new journal entry.
Journal entry: I'll never forget the porcupinecone. (obj_porcupinetree)

Whatever you choose, "Watch it." or "Hunt it.", Gale will come into the scene and curiously watch the porcupine in the tree. You shoot the porcupine for some meat and there's a chance it will fall on Gale's head, or you can drag Gale away.

Slow down a bit, pups. What is that...

A porcupine will be blocking your path. Choose "Let's check it out." for an option to hunt the porcupine. (Other outcomes maybe? Why else would you have a check out option and a hunt option in the first place if the result's the same?)
Ptarmigans
Chomper... you look ready to chomp./What's going on up there, Stilton?/Noodle, should I be scared?
(the one with Noodle if Noodle but not Stilton is in your team)

You see four ptarmigans sitting in the snow on the side of your trail. Choose "Let's check it out" for the following options and a journal entry.
Journal entry: I almost didn't even see them. (obj_ptarmigancamo)

Option 1: Talk to the fluffers.
You talk to them but quickly realise you have to choose between the other two options.

Option 2: Hunt them.
You shoot the birds.

Option 3: Let the dogs go for them.
The dogs kill some of the birds and this will fill their hunger bar.

What's out there?

You can choose "I'm going to check it out." and then will find one lone ptarmigan in a tree. You can shoot it for some meat or leave it alone.

This is also Stilton's first story event. If you trigger the story event instead, it goes a little bit different.

You'll find two ptarmigans, one in the tree and another one on the ground.

Option 1: Shoot the ptarmigan in the tree.
Unknown.

Option 2: Let Stilton go for his.
Stilton catches the ptarmigan on the ground and the one in the tree flies away.
Rabbit
Hey, a bunny!

On the side of the trail you can see a lone bunny. Choose to "Check it out." and you will follow it to discover the whole (cute) family.

You can say "I'm still going to shoot you." and you will debate with yourself if you really want to shoot the cute rabbit you just named Fluffington.

I feel like there's a journal entry to be found here somewhere, but I'm not sure what combination that would be. So far I've just discovered shooting the bunny gives you meat, leaving does nothing and missing your shot makes you say your heart wasn't into it and you might catch one of his cousins in a trap later (something to do with the trap?).

I've also discovered another version of the event where you don't comment on how cute the bunnies are or name them. You just have the option to shoot them and she is pleased with the kill. This might have something to do on your playstyle (I shot a lot of animals that run).

Rabbit is supposed to be a delicacy.

You will see a rabbit cross your path. Choose "Check it out." for some options.

Option 1: You mind being bait?
You wait a little bit and there is a chance an eagle will swoop down and pick up the rabbit. This will be both a journal entry and an achievement. If the eagle doesn't come, you have the two other options left.
Journal entry: I still feel guilty about fluffington (obj_bunnytakenbyeagle)
Achievement: See a bunny fly

Option 2: I'm going to let Chomper have you/Let Chomper try his luck. (depending on if you chose option 1 first)
Chomper will either catch the rabbit or not.

Option 3: Let's hunt./Hunt the bunny and leave. (depending on if you chose option 1 first)
You shoot the bunny.
Skunk
Chomper, don't get any bad ideas.

You see a skunk in the middle of the trail and then suddenly an owl flies over and they both run (or fly) away. Choose "Follow them" for some options.

Option 1: Watch and see what happens.
This action has three outcomes.
  • Outcome 1: The owl will catch the skunk and fly off. This is a journal entry.
Journal entry: Owl vs skunk. A battle for the ages. (obj_owlfightskunk) (this is an entry for the owl)

  • Outcome 2: The skunk will succesfully fight off the owl with a stink cloud. This is another journal entry.
Journal entry: Those skunk bombs are very effective. (obj_skunkfightoffowl)

  • Outcome 3: One of your dogs might kill the skunk and eat it. This outcome might only occur when your dogs are hungry or it might have something to do with having an aggressive dog as the lead (like Bodega).
Option 2: Hunt the skunk.
You shoot the skunk and get some meat.

Option 3: Hunt the owl.

You can ponder what the reason will be for shooting the owl and you remember that shooting owls brings bad luck. If you succesfully shoot the owl it will count as becoming "cursed", just like shooting the owl in the "I'm certain I read that owls are good omens." event. It changes a few lines in the "There's an owl nearby somewhere." event and you will become able to trigger the "Ooh another owl!" event.

Option 4: Try to talk it out.
You will realise the only meaningful conversations you will have with animals are those with Chomper. The animals both escape.

Fin, what do you smell, girl?

This is the first part of Fin's story. "Follow Fin." and she will lead you to a skunk who will then spray her.

You can reassure or scold her.

Is that a...

Your road will be blocked by a skunk who sprays over all of you. If you choose to "Inspect" you can go tell the skunk how you feel about that and it also gives a journal entry.
Journal entry: That spray smells like rotten gasoline. (obj_skunkcloud)

Option 1: On second thought... Hunt it.
You shoot the skunk and get some meat. You can give the skunk the reason for killing it as well.

Option 2: Let the dogs try to catch it.
Your dogs will have a small meal.
Squirrel
Come on, Chomper, it's just another squirrel.

This is the third and final part of Chomper's story. You can choose "Let's check it out." and Chomper will hunt the squirrel or let Chomper choose and Chomper will decide not to hunt this time.

Don't worry about it, Chomper.

This is the second part of Barkley's story. Chomper will spot a squirrel and start a fight. The squirrel will try to attack you but Barkley intervenes and kill the squirrel. You can teach Barkley to bark the next time instead.

Oh great, a squirrel.

A squirrel will cross your path. This is also the first part of Chomper's story, so as long as you have not completed it it will be very common. Choose "Fine, let's check it out" for more options.

Option 2: He does look tasty, Chomper. Go for it.
Chomper attacks the squirrel.

Option 3: I speak wink. I'm gonna wink back.
The squirrel will run away or attack you. There is also an outcome that the squirrel hops off the log and reveals a free bullet in the snow for you to take. If it attacks you, that's a new journal entry and achievement.
Journal entry: Look up if squirrels actually have rabies (obj_squirrelattacked)
Achievement: Pondered if you got rabies

Option 1: I'm gonna shoot it. (Use bullet)
You won't have any meat to loot and you can choose to let Chomper lick the area clean or leave right away (see second picture).
+
Option 1 will have a follow-up event which is

Chomper...

You will meet another squirrel quickly dashing from one side to the other.

Option 1: Ok, fine, it's your nemesis. Go try to eat it.
  • Outcome 1: Chomper either manages to eats the squirrel or fails to do so.

  • Outcome 2: Chomper just barks at the squirrel

  • Outcome 3: Multiple squirrels show up. For this outcome it might be necessary to let Chomper not lick the log in the previous event. You have now a few new options.

Option 1: Fine. I'll just shoot one of you too.
    Unknown.

Option 2: Chomper, do your chomping!
Chomper will bark but does not do any chomping.

Option 3: Dogs, snarl at them or something.
Let the dogs snarl at them and they might attack you and steal some meat. This is a journal entry (and quite a funny outcome).
Journal entry: Squirrels wouldn't want meat, right? (obj_squirrelmeat)

Option 4: I'm sorry about the other squirrel.
You apologize to the squirrels and they leave you alone.
Option 2: I don't mind using a bullet on you.
You shoot the squirrel.
Weasel
Chomper, it's not a long squirrel. It's a weasel.

This is the second part of Chomper's story. You will see a weasel running away. Chomper will not listen if you try to move on and make the sled stop to search for the weasel.

Is that a squirrel up there?

You think you see a squirrel, but will notice it is actually a weasel. Choose to "Check it out." to find the weasel in a tree. You can shoot it or leave it alone.

Huh? Would you look at that...

You see two weasels on the trail. This is Bodega's first part of their story. If you choose to "Follow them." you see a weasel distracting you while the other one tries to steal some of your meat. The weasel will not succeed because Bodega will stop (and kill) it. You can give Bodega a treat for good behaviour and in either way receive some meat and a journal entry.
Journal entry: Saw the weasel war dance. More cute than scary. (obj_weaselwardance)
Wolf
Hey there...

A wolf is standing to the side of the trail. This is the second part of Noodle's story. If you choose "Ok, come with me." Noodle will come with you and the both of you discover the wolf has killed a caribou for you for some free meat.

How close do you think that wolf is?

You hear a wolf howling in the distance. If you "Try to find it." you will find nothing, but get scared that it might be stalking you. This is a journal entry.
Journal entry: How do you know if a wolf is stalking you? (obj_wolfstalking)

Noodle, are you trying to bring it closer or keep it away?

You hear a wolf howling and Noodle reacts to it. This is the first part of Noodle's story. Noodle will lead you to a wolf stuck in a trap.

Here you have the choice to help the wolf, leave it alone or to shoot it. If you help the wolf it will continue Noodle's story and you will get a journal entry.
Journal entry: I couldn't leave the wolf like that. (obj_wolfreleasetrap)

Noodle, your friend is back!

This is the third part of Noodle's story. Noodle is happy to see their wolf friend again and you can let them play together for a while.

Oh hey... a little wolf friend.

A wolf will run along your trail for a while, then attack you. This will injure you unless you have Barkley on your team, he will get injured instead (this is also part one of Barkley's story).

Option 1: Shoot at wolf.
You will kill the wolf and get some meat.

Option 2: Throw food at wolf.
Throw a piece of meat to make the wolf go away. This is a journal entry.
Journal entry: sometimes you have to feed the wildlife (obj_wolftossfood)

Option 3: Swing rifle at wolf.
You distract the wolf and Barkley bites it. The wolf runs off.
Wolverine
Feel free to stay over there. We don't mind.

This is either the second event for Igloo or the third event for Bodega. A wolverine will attack your team and either Igloo or Bodega will defend you. This will earn you a journal entry.
Journal entry: I'd like to avoid fighting wolverines. They're claws and fury. (obj_wolverinefought)

Interesting, also never seen that one! I wonder if it has to do with your dogs being hungry, or maybe Bodega is more aggressive than the others. I can't remember if I ever let Bodega lead except when going for their story. Just to confirm, you mean the event where you say "Chomper, don't get any bad ideas.", right?

i just found a new outcome for the skunk vs owl, i chose to wait and see what happens and Bodega killed the skunk and ate it. I got this on bodega's story, its not part of his story, and the dogs were on 1 bar of hunger left

Nice find! I've done that event so many times and never had that outcome. I'll add it to the guide.

Had a small squirrel encounter option that wasn't mentioned in the Guide. In the 'Oh great, a squirrel.' encounter, if you choose Option 3 ('Wink Back'), the squirrel didn't attack or run, instead hopped off the log and used it's tail to uncover a bullet hidden in the snow. I gained +1 bullet and the encounter ended.

If I remember correctly, then yes. You can encounter the wolf without Barkley's story, but then there will be no options and the wolf will just attack you.

When you say the wolf encounter for feed the wildlife has to be done during Barkley's story, is that only the option to throw food? I've encountered the wolf attacking the musher on the sled without Barkley on the team before.

I am going to try a new game and maybe if i get the feed the wildlife the game might give it to me idk

@aquatorrent, I was hit by the beaver but it doesn't list it in the book. you look at the open water where the tree fell. then you get an option to change your mind and check out the beaver. if you do that option you have the chancre to be hit or dodge the tree falling.
aquatorrent 5 Jul, 2024 @ 3:14am
@Skyliam: sorry to hear that. if you have the journal entry for beavers have good aim, can you tell me where exactly you got that one? Because i cant seem to get that one...
