How to get the unattainable laurel in normandy

Have you ever been annoyed that you didn't get the last laurel in Normandy because you accidentally destroyed the necessary metal boxes?

I'm not sure if anyone will still (or again) be playing this game in 2024.

But if you do, or if you've ever been annoyed that you didn't get the last laurel in normandy, here's the solution for you!

In Normandy, the 10th laurel can only be reached as long as the metal crates have not been destroyed.
In case you did (like me...) you will lose this laurel forever - because the metal crates will not respawn.

The good thing:
Fortunately, this problem has been fixed with the 1.0.33 update - the destroyed metal crates are now replaced by normal wooden crates.

But now the bad news:
For some incomprehensible reason, they have "unfixed" the problem again with the latest update 1.0.34 - and given the age of this patch, they probably won't release a new patch either.

To avoid having to start a new game follow these steps to downgrade your version:

If neccessary, change the entry "StateFlags" to "4" in the file "appmanifest_1261520.acf" in the folder \steam\steamapps
Open the steam console (if you don't know how, here is the fastest way:
1. Press the keys Win+"R"
2. Enter "steam://open/console"
Enter the following command:
download_depot 1261520 1261521 3700837599584725504

(IMPORTANT: This is the patch for the Windows version! If you are using a Mac, please use the DepotID 1261522 instead of 1261521.
Unfortunately, only one manifest (4615780621000783703) is available (March 12, 2021), the version I used for Windows was released on November 10, 2020 instead of the latest version of September 13, 2021)
The older files will now be downloaded. Please be aware that this may some time and is not shown under downloads. Just wait. If you get an error - don't care. I got an error too - and it still worked.
Copy the downloaded files from steam\steamapps\content\app_1261520\depot_1261521\ into your game folder (usually steamapps\common\Asterix & Obelix XXL 1)
Start the game, travel to the location and there you will find the new wooden crates.

For those who are interested: This was my error message, and it still worked:
Depot download failed : error downloading chunk for file "\Steam\steamapps\content\app_1261520\depot_1261521\XXL1Resources\_Cooking\Levels\05_Egypt\LVL05_SEC05_LightsRmt.level.ot.GameStream.gen"

Oh, actually the crashing problem was due to the fact that I haven't downloaded it fully. It said it will only download 1.5Gb, but downloaded the entire game instead. So I guess the same reason for people in the first comments, it also crashed upon entering the levels for me.

worked for me in 2025 thanks, by the way if you get crush too after all these just try redownloading old version again (after removing the first one), I downloaded without errors and it worked

Yes, once you have destroyed the iron crates they won't reappear.

Without that crates you aren't able to obtain this laurel.

They patched it - but with the last patch they ever made they removed that feature (respawing crates), so you had this issue again.

Sorry to hear that!

Did you get any error? Keep in mind, in my case I got the error for egypt, so I couldn't play beyond this point.

So, to assume:
I downgraded the game during my run, but still beeing in the normandy (if I remember correctly), maybe I just unlocked Greece. I downgraded, went back to take the laurel and proceed the gameplay until I unlocked Egypt.
Had to update the game again (due to the error) to play further.

This did not seem to work for me. Everything goes fine up until I enter any level, at which point the game crashes without fail.
