Each character in the game can have up to 5 different roles. Roles have two main effects on the game:

They determine which actions are available to a character.
They give bonuses to actions conducted by this character.
However, they also impact the recruiting cost of a character, as characters with many roles tend to cost more to recruit.

Characters' roles won't change during the game, except through special events.
For example, Mao Zedong's roles or Chiang Kai-shek's roles evolve with the character.

Officers are army specialists.
They share most of the military actions with warlords but receive bonuses for them.
Additionally, they have access to special military actions that warlords cannot perform, like the possibility to split their armies.

They perform better than non-officers at any military task.

Nothing, but a character with only this role would be very limited in available actions.

The statesman is the role of choice if you want to develop a province: not only do they have access to most of the province policies, but they are also very effective at implementing them!

The statesman also has access to personal actions to maintain a dense network of relationships. This will be helpful if you have long-term plans to bring a character from another faction into yours.

Use the 'Supervise District' action to make all policies in a district progress faster while preventing revolts and raising the vitality. This action is the real superpower of statesmen.

Unionist characters are used to organize workers. They mostly create unions, organize strikes, mobilize worker pickets, etc.

Not all factions have access to the actions of a unionist character: this role is mainly for the Communist Party and the Guomindang. For other factions, it is mostly useless.

Political workers have many actions to support the development of districts and armies. They are the perfect complement to peasant leader and unionist roles.

They are not useful for all factions. The Communists, the Guomindang, the Guominjun, and some Ma factions all have special actions that involve political workers.

They are effective at raising your influence over the classes in a district, and at improving your troops' morale and traits (provided these options are unlocked for the faction and scenario you are playing).

One of the most powerful but underrated roles. Diplomats are very useful for increasing relationships with other factions and forging alliances, bribing and seducing characters from other factions, and dealing with foreign powers.

This role represents characters who have links to or belong to gangster groups like the Green Gang or secret societies like the Red Spears.

What are gangster/secret society characters good at?

Any action involving smuggling, opium, or dealing with bandits will receive a bonus if conducted by a gangster character.

Characters have a secret hidden trait: they can be categorized as created characters, historical characters, main characters, and legendary characters. Assassination attempts against legendary characters have a huge penalty. The penalty decreases for each category, with created characters being the easiest to kill.

This is a useful role for maintaining order in a province and fighting banditry.

The number of bandits decreases faster in districts controlled by police characters. They are also able to gather information on other characters and eventually arrest them.

What are they best at?

If you play as a warlord faction, you will find that they are effective at cracking down on radical activists and raising various militias in the province (peasant militias, police forces, merchant militias...). Most legal and order policies will progress faster if initiated by a police character.

This is a nice role to delegate to the AI

A police character will take care of the province they are in, ensuring it is well defended by militias.

Often, players don't really know what to do with their theorist character. But they are better than they seem.

What can your theorists do?

This role gets bonuses to all district policies involving education. This role can also conduct significant doctrinal fights against your opponents to make them lose face.

A well-used theorist character can seriously decrease the danger posed by an opponent by attacking his face, which is often crucial when you are struggling to control organizations on a city map.

If you play as the Communists, your theorists also have access to some special actions like 'studying the workers' condition' or 'translating Marxist texts' that can be an easy source of influence and face.

Disadvantages:

There are so many things to do in a game of 'Rise of the White Sun'... While it is useful to have one theorist in your character pool, some factions are plagued by tons of useless theorists. These characters are then mostly useful for their other roles.
