1 - The first thing you need to do is go to where the game is installed. You can do so by right-clicking on Chaos Chain in your Steam library, hover over manage, and then click "Browse local files". This will bring you to the game's installation folder.

2 - Locate the template file in the root (main folder) called "Custom_Faces". If you have file extension view enabled on your computer, it will show up as "Custom_Faces.png".

3* - Create a backup of this file by copying it and pasting it to the location of your liking so you always have a backup in case something gets messed up. This is optional.

4 - Open the file in your choice of photo editing software such as Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Paint Dot Net, or otherwise.

5 - This is what you should see:
(The slots are numbered 1-8 in the guidelines so you can easily determine which slot you want to use in game)

6 - You can overwrite what is in each 96x96 pixel box with a custom face image for a total of 8. Here is my example:
(I pasted my image over top of slot 1 - I chose to keep the style consistent with the rest of the face portraits in game by having a transparent background behind the face, but you are NOT required to do so)

9 - When you're done editing, save the file. Open the game.

10 - Open your PDA item by using it from the plot section in the inventory or by pressing "P" while in game. Select "Customization". -----
11 - Select "Activate Custom Portrait". -----
12 - Select "Choose Custom Portrait Slot". -----
13 - Enter a number from 1-8 to choose the desired slot for the portrait you wish to use. Use the arrow keys or W and S to choose. Enter 1 or 9 to cancel. 14 - If you've done everything correctly, you'll get a confirmation message. You can now close the PDA.

15 - Check if it worked. Open the menu by pressing Escape and see if your portrait is rendered.
