The ravaged world throws everything it has at you. To build a lasting haven, you need a solid starting point. Here, I'll share some prime locations I've discovered on my travels, offering natural defenses and valuable resources. As I explore further, this guide will expand, so check back often!

What Makes a Great Starting Point?
  • Fortress: Look for pre-built defenses or walled towns. Existing fortifications save time and resources

  • River Defense: Can be a great natural barrier against the infected. Look for locations that are surrounded by water on at least two sides

  • Buildings as Defense: Settle in a dense urban area. Fortify them with walls and gates, and use them as lookout towers

  • Resource Rich: Keep an eye out for locations with plentiful trees, bricks, iron and lootable buildings for essential supplies

These locations have been personally tested, and the vast majority are free from major glitches or bugs

Every location offers its own set of unique advantages and challenges!

These locations might present some architectural oddities, such as misplaced buildings. But don't let these little bugs deter you from venturing into these zones!

The dock/shore area of Yokohama, Japan is really good. Lots of buildings to scavenge in the nearby city, tons of open space for farms and tree planting, massive buildings for warehouses, a lot of potential expeditions, tons of vehicles, and great choke-points.

And most importantly, as far as I can tell, no major downsides like resource or weapon availability.

Gibraltar (either the southern tip or the northwestern part) is very good for many reasons, but is newly challenging when terrain height is enabled as there are some impassable areas you need to be careful pathfinding with. Plus, all hordes come from Spain, same as in real life.

Already mentioned by Sol, but Fort Monroe (Hampton) in Virginia, USA is definitely a fun map. The actual Fort encompasses 565 acres and this is reflected well in the game. There's good open space for farming and plenty of buildings to repurpose or tear down as you see fit within the fort itself to make it completely self sufficient. It's surrounded by a moat with three roads connecting it to the surrounding area, providing easy scavenging nearby.

Others:
Fort Monroe in the US (Across from Norfolk, which is also another nice starting spot)
Hakedate, Japan
Naarden (as mentioned earlier)
Fort Bourtagne, France
Willemstad, Netherlands
Hulst, Netherlands
Heusden, Netherlands

There are a bunch of smaller ones as well, with a couple of building inside if that's your cup of tea. I prefer to be able to keep my core buildings inside the fort :)
Tested Naarden and Fort Bourtagne so far. Starting Fort Monroe now.
Naarden has annoying surroundings in terms of rivers all over the place.
Bourtagne is ok, but was a bit smaller than i wanted

Copenhagen, "Kastellet" is a star-shaped fortress in the middle of the capital with water surrounding it, roughly 15 buildings and lots of trees. There are two bridges connecting to the fortress. The rest of the city is close by for exploring.

Do a google search for fortresses :)
Some nice locations with ready made fortifications, like Naarden in Netherlands. Haven't tried or checked out Neuf-Brisach in France yet,among others.

Another nice location is Rotterdam. There's an island in the middle there that you can easily fortify (3 bridges leading to it, which the infected prioritize using)
