How to Download Mods Post 2021 (easier version)
By SuperStruct
Somewhere around 2021 the Steam Workshop stopped downloading your subscribed mods. Thankfully there is a way to extract the files and install them manually.

Downloading the Mod
1. First, Go to Steam Workshop steamworkshopdownloader.io
(The site itself is not malicious, but you might want to go on with an adblocker. Don't click on any ads.)

(If you don't want to use Workshop Downloader, consult the bottom of this guide.)

2. Then open the steam workshop and go to the page of the Cortex Command Mod you want.

3. Copy the Mod's URL. If you are using the steam app instead of a web browser the URL is up here...

4. Paste that URL into the downloader. The mod should pop up.

5. The mod will go to your downloads Folder. in the next step we will learn how to put the mod into the Cortex Command files.
Moving mod from downloads to Cortex Command
1. Go to downloads and select the mod you want to transfer

2.We want to extract the secondary file inside the main download.
It will be a .RTE file nested inside the WORKSHOPMODS file

Inside this...

Is this...

If you have windows 11 you can just copy paste this file to remove it. Otherwise you will have to unzip the file before extracting from it. If your computer does not have inbuilt software, you can install a free program like 7zip to do this.

3. Now we will open Cortex Command's internal files. Using the Steam Application, you can find Cortex Command's internal files here.

4. Now paste that .RTE file alongside the other .RTE files. They are all on the very first layer of the local files.

Each .RTE file contains the info for a faction's tech in Cortex Command.

5. Start the game. If there is an error in one of the .RTE files the game will tell you which one. If the malfunctioning file starts with the words WORKSHOPMODS, you want the .RTE file inside that one.

We don't want this...

We want this...

6. Enjoy the chaos, let me know if you have any questions.
A slightly more complex alternative.
It may be possible to go into your steam userdata files and extract the mod that way.
Here is the guide on how to do that.

mods also stopped being updated so safe to say it's not only the download that broke, sadly
