• You run faster without any equipped weapons. Quickly unequip them by pressing [X].
  
• The Squire merchant can change your default loadout. When you die and lose everything, you start with this loadout. By default, only a few items are selected for your class. Be sure to equip more items, especially the campfire for healing!
  
• After surviving a level, visit the Squire and select "Equip Base Gear" to replenish your potions, campfire, and other essentials for free.

• Play on a monitor brightness that maximizes your vision.
  
• Other people may hear you when you walk or do stuff.
  
• Some teammates will PK you and steal your gear, don't trust randoms.
  
• When using voice, always tell that you come in peace if you want to kill them. If someone tells you that they come in peace, don't trust them. If you don't want to fight, walk/run away.
  
• A common gesture for "I come in peace" is to quickly crouch several times, but don't trust it, always keep your distance and guard up.
  
• This game is brutal, if you are new then you should consider starting as a Fighter and team-up with someone on their official Discord channel[discord.com] (highly recommended!).
  
• There are many different kinds of exits like elevators, stairs, portals, rafts, ropes. They show up on your map as blue icons. If they are colored red then they are a gateway to hell instead (=very dangerous).
  
• Is an exit not open? Then either another player took it or you'll have to wait longer (most exits are open by the time there are ~5 minutes left on the timer, some take longer).

• Small amounts of armor don't do much. Click here for full details[darkanddarker.wiki.spellsandguns.com]. An armor rating of 112 provides an 18.9% damage reduction. However, if it significantly slows your movement, you might be better off opting for lighter armor or even none at all in lower levels. It's no fun being in full armor and getting outmaneuvered by a naked ranger.
  
• Only equip gear you're prepared to lose.
  
• Heal using red potions, campfires (press [G] to rest), resting [G], or class abilities.
  
• Your dark red HP bar can be healed using bandages or by resting [G].
  
• In the lobby, instantly stash items by clicking [Shift] + [Right Mouse Button] onto them or by talking to the Squire.
  
• Resting at a campfire resets/refills all your single-use skills.
  
• Removing consumables (e.g., bandages) after extraction and storing them in your inventory/stash lets you reuse them later for free.
  
• Your potions emit a strong glow when equipped, making you extremely visible even in the dark. To hide or camp, unequip all potions and store them in your inventory. I usually do this in the tavern before the map loads.

Quests are important not only for their one-time rewards but also for the (permanent) merchant reputation that they provide. This reputation is per character.

Please note that you can still be killed while extracting, such as when climbing a rope.

A glowing blue circle on the floor that eventually rises. Once elevated, it can be interacted with to summon up to three one-time use portals. You may chose to summon the portal(s) and use them at a later time but take care, other people can steal them.


Locked behind metal gates, the stairs become accessible when the gates open, often accompanied by torches lighting up. If stone blocks are obstructing the stairs, it means someone else has already used this exit, and you'll need to find another way out. The stairs are limited to one person only.

This elevator moves up and down on a timer and can be reused indefinitely. It extracts anyone standing on it when it moves. Usually located in the center of each map.

This elevator operates by using a corresponding lever and is a one-time use. It can extract anyone on it once the lever is activated.

A rope descends from the ceiling when it is ready for use. It is a one-time use and likely limited to extracting one person.


A raft appears on a timer and can be reused indefinitely. It extracts anyone standing on it when it spawns.
