• You have to be playing in Ultimate Mode. In Nightmare Mode, the moon phase becomes Waning Gibbous, and in Normal Mode, the overground area is not accessible at all.
  
• You must recruit Alfred in Stage 2. Otherwise, it is not possible to access the overground area either.

Make sure that Alfred has the Burning Sphere subweapon (indicated on the HUD as a circle of dots).
If he does not have it at the start of the stage, destroy the first purple lantern as him and pick up the red scroll. After that, go through the room as usual.



You will see a staircase upwards, but its entrance is only 1 block tall and is 6 blocks above the ground. DO NOT destroy the orange lantern below it.
(The staircase is easily accessible by Bat Gebel, but he is only playable in Stage 3 if it is Nightmare Mode, where the moon phase is waning gibbous instead.)


Go through the room until you see a door at the right. DO NOT go through the door.
You will instead see a staircase leading downwards, but the green archer will keep shooting arrows.
Use Alfred's Burning Sphere subweapon to make you immune to those endless arrows and defeat the archer.


Go downstairs to the room below, and you will see two lanterns to the right of you.
Switch to Alfred and destroy the purple lantern, which contains the Frostcalibur subweapon in the form of a blue scroll.
Pick up the scroll, then go back upstairs to the previous room.





Go all the way left back to the beginning of the room, where the first orange lantern was found.
As Alfred, use Frostcalibur to freeze the lantern.
Switch to Zangetsu and Double jump onto the top of the frozen lantern (4 blocks above the ground).
Then, make another double jump onto the ledge 4 blocks above, and go up the stairs to access the overground section.


(In Normal Mode, it is impossible to access the overground area, since Double Jump Zangetsu is the only one capable of making 4-block jumps, and Miriam can only make 3-block jumps. Double Jump can only be obtained in normal mode by killing Alfred, making the Frostcalibur + Double Jump combo impossible.)


You will be rewarded with the rare sight of a blue and waxing crescent moon.
