Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire was a nightmare for all of Europe. Still, after the Battle of Vienna in 1683 shattered the facade of power and centuries of "peace under the Ottomans," the Empire's politicians realized that the Empire had been headed for depravity and destruction since the late reign of [Legislator] Suleiman.

Rebellions, deficits, wars, everything seemed to threaten the ancient empire. Reformers sought ancient glories rather than modern ideas; the armies mopped up and picked their favorite sultans; and the Grand Mufti, balancing right to left, looked forward to the growth of the waqf ...... These disorders continued until the defeat of Gaziantep.

Egypt's secession was not unexpected by Costantinier, but with the Russians also losing to the Egyptian army, the politicians realized that only true Westernization could save the aging empire. And so in 1839 came the Tanzimat era, when politicians vowed to transform the Ottomans into a Western nation.

Trade gates were opened, government westernization was well underway, the charter tax system was outlawed, and Ottomanism was on the rise ...... Everything seemed to be going in the right direction, but reform, by nature, comes with calamity.

The treasury was empty, the government was bankrupt, Europeans came and went leaving only destroyed crafts and native bourgeoisie, the Russians kept agitating for a Balkan rebellion, and the power struggle within the government intensified ...... Eventually, the Russians went to war once again, breaking the already shaky reforms, Hamid II declared the parliament dissolved, the constitution set aside, and the age of despotism was upon us.

But was there nothing left of the Reformation?

The United Progressive Committee, a nascent revolutionary force, emerged from the chaos of the First Balkan War in 1908. Hamid II was forced to accede to their demands, establishing the principles of constitutional government for the future. And thereafter the Empire seemed to have a spring in its step; not only did neutrality in the Great War free the Empire's economy from the constraints of free trade, but indigenous industry grew rapidly during the Great War and the interwar period, the army continued to modernize by the foundations of its earlier reforms, and the Great Depression instead became a booster of industrialization under the policies of nationalization...... But one thing was focused on all political factions in the Empire, whether it was the fractious United Progressive Committee, the pragmatic Fatherland and Freedom Committee, or the obscure Muslim League:
