Description
By early October, the 1st Marine Division had been reduced to a single regiment, the 5th Marines, after relentless and costly efforts to secure the Umurbrogol Mountains—a treacherous landscape ominously nicknamed "Bloody Nose Ridge" by the battle-hardened men who fought there. Despite their valor and determination, the brutal terrain and fiercely entrenched Japanese defenders had exacted a devastating toll on the division. After weeks of relentless combat, the 1st Marine Division was finally relieved by the soldiers of the 81st "Wildcat" Division. However, the battle was far from over. The Wildcats would face the grueling task of reducing the Japanese pocket, enduring another six weeks of intense and bloody fighting to secure the ridge-line.
