[SP/COOP7] Welcome to Syria

Description
This mission is supposed to be the first of a campaign based on Syrian War. I started to work on this mission many years ago but I never published because it did not fit the quality I really wanted to provided. I made and remade many times. Now, that I am updating all my old missions and working in many others; I decided to give a chance and finish this. I hope you enjoy guys, and please feel free to give me your feedback. Let me know also if you find some bug or any problem.

As I mentioned in my other missions, I do not support any kind of ideology or political view. I develop missions only for fun, and I am always open to use any kind of faction if I can suit them with a good story.

WELCOME TO SYRIA

It is May 17th, 2013. The country is in a total chaos. Aleppo is under rebel control and Damascus is under siege; some of the southern suburbs have just fallen to the FSA. Our army is completely overwhelmed because the big amount of different fronts that we need to be able to deal with. Some of our ranks have already deserted to the enemy or to leave the country.

Countless groups of diverse origins are taking up arms, probably with international support. Some of them, like the FSA or the Al-Nusra organization, are the strongest. Our faithful ally, Russia, is considering sending aid but we have to resist the challenge and wait for any type of allied intervention.

That mission take place in a fictional Idlib province, in northern Syria. The entire region has fallen under the control of the jihadist group Al Nusr and the Free Syrian Army. From this region they are launching raids on Latakia, a strong government stronghold. The High Command sends you to take the city of Nagara, which serves as a stronghold for the oil camps, in the north. Intelligence reports confirm a big presence of Al Nusra and the FSA in the region.

Rasman military base is still under syrian army, but the rebels have captured the town few days ago, so there are heavy clashes in the area.

Mission profile

Story: Fictional, based on true story.

Advices/Notes

1-For those who will play the mission completely SP: The AI tends to waste huge amount of ammo during each engagement. By default all characters are supplied with a good amount of ammo, although some characters with bags carry extra ammo for the whole team. There are 3 ammo crates in the mission, you can give REARM order to the AI but just 1 by 1. Example: select each soldier go to number 6 order and find REARM in the crate. The vanilla AI is pretty clunky by default and as usual they obey that order when they are with no ammo. I have made several tests and it works. Sometimes you need to give the order to the soldier to MOVE near the crate, and then order to rearm.
It is just a bad AI behaviour done by the developers of Arma 3.

2-That mission require coordination and much teamplay. Each player inventory has been developed 'by hand'. Some players carry more ammo, because their backpack. They carry extra ammo for the whole team. So share your ammo as your needs and communicate with your team.

3-Weapons try to fit realisticaly to the army in the mission. Do not expect 'free bar' of scopes.

4-Counterattacks usually start with a mortar or artillery barrage. Just be advice.

5-I have had no time to test AI mods, especially Lambs_danger. So I am not sure if everything works fine with it. That mission has many trigger. Please let me know.

If you enjoy the mission, feel free to take a look OPERATION TEMPEST WIND, the first mission of my fictional russian campaign: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=237352389

NOTE: Iraqi-Syrian Conflict mod uses RHS weapons. Take in account that RHS weapons has not zeroed the scopes, by default. That it means that you will start with the scopes set up as different distances, depending on the weapon. I.e: AK74 - 440m... so on and so forth. Just be advice to adjust if you do not want to waste unnecesary bullets at the beginning.

If you like the mission, please rate it positively. It will help me to develop more missions.

@komodo Thank you. I will take it in account for future projects.

@komodo That first mission is based on some syrian army operations in the Idlib province during the early days of the war. The army in that time was overwhelmed because the huge amount of fronts and the desertion of many ranks. The rebels (FSA, Al-Nusr...) got almost the full control of that region; same like it happened with Aleppo or Homs.

As for Al-Nusr, I have used them because the mod by itself does not add a Free Syrian Army faction. In any case it does not clash or create incoherences, because many operations were driven by both factions; even many time the same ranks were under both flags.

I was checking the CUP base mods (CORE/MAPS/WEAPONS/UNITS/VEHICLES) but sadly I have not been able to find the factions that I need for that series of missions about Syrian War. The only thing I try in my missions is to use as less dependencies as posible. For me, as a player aswell, is really annoying when you need to download a dozen of mods + their dependencies to play a mission.

also i had no issues with the Syria/Iraq mod, ran fine, kinna wish it gets updated tho but CUP recently had an update and I think you can pretty much recreate any faction with it so its worth giving it a look if u wanna base a scenario on CUP
Komodo 7 Sep, 2024 @ 3:24am
thnx Slay, can't wait for wut u come with next

Also curious, which exact battle is this based on, I know Nusra at its closest was pushing Damascus from the South and overrun an airfield there. Syria was/is a hairy conflict few ppl ever bother with unfortunately

@Sling Blade Thank you for your message. Actually I am using that mod because there is no more updated mods about this conflict. At least that easily can include the bunch of factions that I plan to use in future missions of this campaign (SAA, YPG, Peshmerga,ISIS...).

As for 'horribly' broken: to be honest I am not sure what do you mean. This mod uses, as main dependencies, the RHS mods (vehicles, weapons, items... are from RHS). Iraqi-Syrian Conflict is just a reskin mod.

@komodo Thanks a lot for your feedback. You are right. I will check deeply about that. I remember that in vanilla version it is posible to give the 'rearm' order to the AI into ammo crates. I am going to see if that way can fix the problem in the next update.

As for the faction name. Sadly Iraqi-Syrian Conflict mod does not include Free Syrian Army (FSA) as a faction. I did not want to add dozens of dependencies, something really annoying for a player. In real life FSA and Al-Nusr in many cases mimetized between them; insurgents from one group were also fighting sometimes in the other... for that reason it was acceptable for me to add them. I can rework in the next update each enemy AI inventory to add close costumes to FSA for some units.
