How to Enable the Old Timer
By badass_07
The 'Match HUD' seen at the top of your in-game HUD was introduced with the dreaded Meet Your Match update over 8 years ago and is a hideous, distracting eyesore that eats up your frames. Here's how to #BringBack the tried-and-true old timer (pun unintended).

Turning Off the Match HUD
Create an autoexec.cfg file (if you don't already have one) and type in this command:
tf_use_match_hud 0

Launch TF2 and voilà, balance is restored and even your performance is improved (the Match HUD is terribly optimized per nu-TF2 standards). in the distance you hear the faint seething of a Valve Employee whose name starts with a J

Re-enabling the Match HUD
If for whatever strange inconceivable reason you want to revert back to the hideous Match HUD, you can remove the command in your autoexec.cfg and type
tf_use_match_hud 1
in the game console.
"The old timer is glitched!"
The old timer is bugged[github.com] and will show a broken timer on top of a blank Match HUD background after relaunching which still hasn't been fixed, thanks Valve. In order to fix this, simply open the console and type in
tf_use_match_hud 1
then repeat with
tf_use_match_hud 0
...but the issue is that you'll have to do this every time you launch TF2.

For a permanent fix, you can use popular TF2 config creator mastercomfig of which has fixed this issue.
  1. Head to https://comfig.app/ in your browser
  2. Click App and scroll down to Customize
  3. Locate Match HUD and toggle it off

Neato. Proceed to configure mastercomfig to your liking, follow the instructions to install it and you're good to go.

Alternatively if you'd rather not use mastercomfig for any reason, you can instead for a slightly less cumbersome but not permanent method put
bind INSERTKEY "toggle tf_use_match_hud"
in your autoexec.cfg file to use whenever the issue arises.

Meet Your Match and it's consequences have been a disaster for the TF2 playerbase. The update has greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who are “free-to-play", but has destabilized balancing, has made gameplay unfulfilling, has subjected the playerbase to Redditors, has led to widespread queue suffering (in community servers to player suffering as well) and has inflicted severe damage on Team Fortress 2. The continued bloated development of TF2 will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject the playerbase to greater slop and inflict greater damage on the artstyle, it will probably lead to greater community disruption and casual suffering, and it may lead to increased player suffering even in “VAC-secured” servers. #BringBackQuickplay

Chet Faliszek said it best: "TF2 used to be like a chat room with guns." Drop in, drop out, you won and lost individual rounds, but very few people cared. Now you have to re-queue for Casual and wait for the pointless map vote because everyone will just vote to extend the current map anyways.

The only problem is that the old HUD behaves weird on casual :steamfacepalm:

Solution: getting rid of casual
