Editing roadnames & numbers
To edit the details for a locomotive/wagon, firstly open the options menu:
(For VR, use the down-context-option, or on PC press "o")

You will then see a popup menu. Choose the "Name & Number" option.
This will open the edit menu where you can customize everything related to the roadname details.

The roadnumber system is split up into a few different parts, these are:

Roadname
This is usually a short few letters used by the railway company that owns the locomotive/wagon, E.g. "NZR" = New Zealand Rail, "UP" = Union Pacific.

Roadnumber
This is a multiple-digit number which is unique to this specific locomotive/wagon. E.g. "5270" or "997". You can change the number of digits. This will preface the number with zeros to match the correct number of digits, E.g. "0234" instead of "234".
You can also press the refresh button to auto-generate a new random roadnumber.

Prefix
This is some custom text you want added to the beginning of the roadnumber. For example, this is used to add the DX / DG / DA / etc prefix to New Zealand locomotives.

Suffix
This adds some custom text to the end of the roadnumber. This is useful for something like an A/B unit (like the F7 locomotive).

As an example, the in-game official F7 has a roadname setup like this:
Roadname: ATSF (santa fe)
Prefix: F7
Roadnumber: 937
Suffix: -A

Which results in:
ATSF F7 937-A

(roadname) (prefix) (roadnumber) (suffix)

This combined name is what is displayed in the cab, as well as on the hand-held controller:

Random roadnumber range

You can also manually set a min & max value for choosing random roadnumbers.
To do this simply click on the "Roadnumber random range options" menu:

If you leave these settings both at zero, then the game will automatically pick a number that matches the number of digits set on the previous menu.
E.g. Choosing 4 digits will pick any number between 0001 and 9999, and 2 digits will pick a number between 01 and 99.

If you set a custom min/max, it will use these values instead.
E.g. a min of 330 and a max of 350 will limit roadnumbers to only generating within that range.
Display styles
The other main part of this roadnumber system is customizing how these numbers are displayed on the train model.

When you are editing the name/number of a train, you will also be able to see a list of different "number display styles".
Each one of these slots refers to a number object on the train model (e.g. the number boards, or the large number displays on the side of the cab).

You can click on one of these styles to change things like the color & font:

Visible
Change whether this number object is enabled or not. For custom liveries you will want to disable this if the livery already includes numbers drawn on it.

Font
Change the font from a list of preset options

Color
Paint this box with any of the color painters (or custom colours) in the game. You can also use material type painters to make the text glow in the dark.

Text display type
This will change what text is displayed. You can use this to display different information, like:
- Full name & number - Show the entire combined name (the same name shown on the hand-held controller) with both the roadname, prefix, roadnumber & suffix.
- Name only - just display the roadname (E.g. "ATSF" or "NZR").
- Number only - Display the roadnumber, without the prefix or suffix (E.g. "5270").
- Number with prefix & suffix - Display the roadnumber with the prefix and suffix included (E.g. F7 228-A").
- Prefix only - Display just the prefix (E.g. "DX").
- Suffix only - Display just the suffix (E.g. "- A").

You can be creative with these, like using the "suffix" slot to instead display a travel destination for a commuter train.

Scale adjustment
Change the size of the text display. This is useful for making minor adjustments when different fonts are larger/smaller than others.
Adding numbers to liveries
By default, all custom liveries will have dynamic roadnumber displays disabled (for backwards compatibility).
But if you want to use dynamic roadnumbers on your livery, simple re-enable them!
You can customize the color/size/font etc to match the style of your livery.

@taholmes160, you can change this for mods (fully position numbers anywhere) but the official liveries can't be customized sorry

is there a way to change where the numbers show up? Id like mine larger on the sides and top of the wagon as my eyes are bad

Every time I set my road number min/max, it keeps defaulting back to zero. Am I doing something wrong? (I am doing this for train mod liveries).

@ellismay, both of these will be fixed in the next update

also with the atsf logo boxcar on one side the logo partially covers the atsf letters and a beam on the same side also covers some of the letters and numbers but only on the orange version of the atsf logo boxcar.

for some reason the number plates on the ac4400cw liverys show up as blank with no number, even if you put a number there in the texture of the livery your making it just dosen't show up.
