First Action on the Matanikau [Mission]

August 19th, 1942. Just 10 days after the Marines have landed on Guadalcanal and seized the airfield and just a week after the Goettge Patrol was annihilated, the 5th Marines are ordered to sweep the area from the mouth of the Matanikau to Kokumbona. The force of Japanese placed there were remnants of the SNLF and Laborers from the 11th and 13th Construction Units that fled when the Americans landed on August 7th. They had been acting in a reconnaissance role ever since the landing. What ensues is the first of seven battles on the Matanikau River spanning from August to January. Collectively, this small piece of ground between the Matanikau and Point Cruz would be the most fought over and contested location on the island of Guadalcanal for the entire campaign. More Japanese and American forces are killed and wounded in this area than anywhere else on the island. The first engagement would see the Marines isolate and destroy that small force of Japanese SNLF inflicting about 65 casualties on the Japanese. The Marine Casualties were considerably light. Two days later the Ichiki Force would land on Guadalcanal and attack the Marines in the famous Battle of Alligator Creek.
