Collectible Toy Dinosaurs (B41)

Description
We proudly present an extremely lightweight mod that adds collectible plastic dinosaurs.

This mod is designed to add just a little bit of additional lore-friendly and historically accurate flavor to the Project Zomboid world. The plastic dinosaurs included in this mod (currently Vol. 1: Dollar Store Dinos) are modeled after cheap/no-brand dinosaur figurines found in the United States (and elsewhere) from the 1960s onwards.

FAQs

WHEN ARE YOU UPDATING FOR B42???
End of January 2025. The changes in B42 have most likely broken something, but the fixes will also likely to be fairly straightforward.

JAN 2025 UPDATE:

Currently updates are on hold. I was not anticipating the update schedule of B42 (the regular updates are great, but they make things difficult for maintaining mods, at least for the time being).

In addition to some other changes/a busy schedule, I am conducting a Project Zomboid B41 campaign with some friends, which has been a work in progress for nearly two years - so that takes priority/my remaining free time. Once TIS sets an approximate date for when B42's multiplayer will be available, I will work on updating my mods for B42. If I find time, the update will come, however for now I suggest just sticking with B41 if you want multiplayer or to play with these mods. Otherwise, check out B42 iand explore the new features and content TIS has been adding - personally I think there's plenty there to keep people busy without too many mods. B42 also added quite a few features that I'd like to incorporate in both existing and new mods I have planned, so when I get back into the swing of modding, some more exciting things will be coming down the line.

Thanks for all your interest! I'm not disappearing from Zomboid, don't worry.

A new B42 version will be uploaded to the workshop so B41 players can still use this one.

Where can I find dinos?
Plastic dinos spawn in the same locations where brick toys are found. Rare Toy Dinosaur Packages might also spawn. Opening them will give you 1-3 random dinosaurs.

Will I be drowning in dino loot?
Absolutely not.

Similar to our Vectrex Playable Console mod, this mod adds a single placeholder item to loot tables using the same probabilities as the base game "brick toys" item. If a placeholder item spawns, it is then automatically replaced with one of the 48 collectible dinos. Thus, finding ANY dino is roughly as rare as finding brick toys. Dinosaurs follow the same loot rarity settings as other toys/junk found in the vanilla game.

Will my game lag from all the dinos I'm displaying?
Vol. 1 "Dollar Store Dinos" contain dinosaur models that are low-poly with simple 4x32 textures - even the most expansive dino display will not impact performance.

What about mod compatibility?
Does not overwrite any base game files, so it should be fully compatible with pretty much every mod.

Can it be added to/removed from an existing save?
You can add it to an existing save, but only unvisited chunks will have a chance for dinos to spawn (unless loot respawn is turned on)

You can also remove it, however, any dinos you have collected will of course disappear :(

What about loot mods?
The dinosaurs use the vanilla game display categories, so they are compatible with More Loot Settings.
In addition, the mod already takes into consideration the "Item Stories" mod - the placeholder item looks and functions identically to the "Toy Dinosaur Package" and can be opened to receive 3 random dinos. Thus, if it accidentally spawns due to "Item Stories" selecting it from a loot table, no admin intervention is required.

Singleplayer/Multiplayer?
SP and MP tested and fully functioning.

Roadmap
If this mod reaches 1000 subscribers, we will release another volume of dinosaurs.
