The Short Version
  1. Go into Local Versus mode.
  2. Set the character you would like to grind experience for in the Player 1 slot as a human-controlled character. (Only the Slot 1 character will gain character XP, and only if they are not a CPU.)
  3. Choose a CPU opponent.
  4. Make sure the CPU player is set to Level 9 difficulty.
  5. At the top of the screen, change the game rules to Infinite Stocks and 7 Minutes.
  6. Start the match (stage select don't matter) and set the controller down. You should gain about 200 XP per match.
  7. On the victory screen, you can hold Start/your Ready button to skip character select for the next match, which saves time on grinding out multiple matches in sequence.
  8. Repeat from Step 6 until you have all the unlocks you want.
The Long Version
Character experience is earned based (almost) exclusively on the time spent in each match. Additionally, there is a cap of 200 XP per match that you can earn. As such, setting the stocks to Infinite and adjusting purely for time will give us the most control over our rate of experience gain. There seems to be some underlying element to the XP scoring based on actual gameplay, as well; it seems to consistently give the maximum XP value per match by maxing out the AI difficulty.

With some very basic testing, we have experience gain values per timed match as follows:
  • 8 Minutes: 200 XP
  • 7 Minutes: 200 XP
  • 6 Minutes: 172 XP
At a glance, we see that 7-minute matches is optimal for experience grind, but let's confirm that with some basic math. If 7 minutes is optimal, we should have an expected value of roughly 28.5 XP per minute (200 XP divided by 7 minutes). If this is optimal, we should be able to multiply this XP per minute value by 6 to get 172 (or at least close to it, depending on how many decimals we keep). Fortunately, it does work out this way, as 6 minutes times 28.5 XP per minute gives us 171 XP. As such, we can be confident that the optimal match time for experience gain is exactly 7 minutes.

As of the November 8, 2014 patch, you can no longer do CPU vs CPU matches. However, this method still works just as effectively by leaving the Player 1 slot as a human-controlled character and just letting the CPU pummel them uncontested.
Why Bother with Character XP at All?
Each character has an individual experience bar that is used to gate cosmetic unlocks! For a full list, you can check Ereson's guide on the subject here: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3355991457

This is definitely not the optimal setup at all. I have made a video which uses cheatengine to get the maximum amount of xp possible. https://youtu.be/823Y2wupX_8?si=h6jX6O0jJKocmniC

This is not efficient - 3 level 9 cpus on a team against you, team attack off for 3 minutes infinite stocks holding down on your analog stick to drop of plat and cc

CPU vs CPU works again.

On my grind for all achievements. No point in reaching the 200 cap since you're missing out on any excess EXP so I just wanted to say that I'm getting 160-190 EXP (dependent on character weight) every 3 minute match with these settings

- 1 vs. 3 level 9 Kraggs/Loxodonts, Friendly Fire off, infinite stocks

- Continuously hold control stick downwards the whole time to prevent as much knockback as possible and to reduce spawn platform invincibility time. Don't attempt to recover or anything special.
If you just want to purely idle then do 4 minutes instead of 3.

- Play on a large stage (Merchant Port, Fire Capital, Hyperborean Harbor, Stormswept Pillar). I won't recommend Rock Wall since it has a high ceiling and the CPUs will just juggle you at high %s without actually killing you

You should be hitting at least minimum 60 - max 150% per stock before dying, at least from my experience. That way the enemies can wallop you over and over without juggling too hard.

new setting:
Infinity/5 minutes
In the first slot, select a CPU level 9 and the your character; for CPUs in the second, third and fourth slots, select level 9 Zetterburn (They have the best DPS).
This way you will receive 190-200 experience every 5 minutes

Yup 1v3 seems to work a lot better

@Jett Altair: I've noticed I get 200XP consistently if you have ALL the opponents on the same team together. Instead of 2v2, try 3 CPU versus 1 Human.

When having the CPU fight a human-controlled character ive found my EXP gain being inconsistent and struggling to hit that 200 per match. Roughly floating between 150-190. To solve this ive been running 1 human-controlled character and 3 CPUs with Teams on.

Im not always hitting that 200 exp per match but its about 190-200 now

I've updated the guide with another passive method that works.

Still works!!
You just have to not use the Player 1 slot, since it's seemingly impossible to start a game with Player 1 set to CPU. Just use the Player 2 slot for your character instead and Player 3 as the other one and remove the Player 1 slot entirely, the Player 2 character will still gain XP
