Improved ice quality does not give anything.
Some quality improvement processes do not give any results - the planted Legendary tree seed will give the Normal quality wood. Maybe the developer will add something in the future like it was with the chests.

So this may sound completely silly, but what does improved quality on ice do? On Fulgora, I have this system that continuously upgrades recycled scrap, so I get a lot of high quality Ice, and I wonder if it's simply completely unneeded

I forgot to write that a legendary wooden chest can also be created in the assembler with installed Quality modules (the chance is higher if the quality of the resources is higher)

To get the legendary ore you need to insert Quality modules to mining drill and then you have a chance to get it (different ores will not stack).

To get a legendary chest you need use legendary resources (ore\iron plate\steel plate).
Or use epic steel plate (the quality can be worse, but the chance will be lower) but in Assembling machine must installed Quality modules and then you have a chance that a legendary chest will be created (epic chests will also be created).

For a legendary wooden chest you need to recycle wood by Recycler with installed Quality modules. Then you will get better quality wood from which you can make a chest.
I tried to grow a quality tree from quality seeds, but the resulting tree was always of normal quality.
You will not get good quality wood when you cut it.

And in case of an iron chest:

Is there legendary iron ore?? Or is the furnace producing from time to time a legendary iron plate (which will NOT stack with the other iron plates it produces)?

I am a little confused, because I know such "epic" and "legendary" stuff only from looter games.

Okay, thank you. Let's keep it practical. For a wooden chest I need obviously wood. Does that mean that I will log from time to time a legendary tree?
