Hi, this is a beginner guide for The Dream Within. I know this game may be a little bit hard for beginners, this guide will explain some game features and provide a beginner walkthrough for the demo region

1. Weapons and Combat
There are three types of weapons in the game: light weapons, spears, and heavy weapons
Light weapon (club, one handed sword)
They deal slash damage, have fast attack and wide swing range, making them good against fast-moving small monsters such as bats, bees, etc. However, light weapons have low damage, and short hit range, making it difficult to hit hard and knock down large monsters. For beginners, it is not recommended to use them as the main weapons, and they are usually kept as a backup weapon, for example, in case of encountering bats in the mine.
After learning basic combat magic, when equipping light weapons, using the middle mouse button will launch an ice slash, dealing ranged damage. In the early stages, it can be used to hit birds on trees. The birds can be raised in the coop at the base. And the ice slash is also good at damaging some monsters with high physical defense.

Heavy weapons (battle hammers, battle axes)
They deal blunt damage, which do high damage and are good at fighting against large monsters, especially monsters with high defense, such as stone monsters in mines, stone golems, etc.
These monsters can be easily knockdown with heavy weapons. However, due to the slow swing and the large recoil after the combo attack, player is vulnerable to the attack of monsters after they recovered from your hit. These weapons have the disadvantage of losing a lot of HP after fights.
After learning basic combat magic, using the middle mouse button when equipping heavy weapons will apply flame enchantment, greatly enhancing your damage output.

Spear
They are used for piercing damage, with the longest range. Animal monsters in the game, such as wild boars, have weakness against piercing damage. The spears can knockdown them easily and do extra damage.
However, monsters in the game sometimes make predictions and dodge your attacks. The spear, due to the small hit area of the first piercing attack combo, may be dodged by small and fast monsters. Player can use the shockwave combo if the first attack misses or use parry and counter- attack to push away monsters and look for the next attacking opportunities.
After learning basic combat magic, using the middle mouse button when equipping spears will apply a lightning force field around the player, making him invincible for a short period of time and stun enemies around. Lightnings do light damage, which is the weakness of most of the nightmare monsters.

Among the three weapon types, the spear has the lowest parrying energy consumption, while the light weapon has the lowest dodging energy consumption. In the early stages of hunting,
it is recommended that players use battle hammers or spears as their main weapons. One thing to note is that mana in the game is very precious, and each points of mana costs.
Unless you have a large amount of unused altar energy or mana crystals in the middle and later stages, do not spam your magic. Use magic attack as a mean to interrupt enemy moves or keep the situation under control.
2 Eating foods
Players can obtain various materials from the wilderness and cook them into delicious foods. Eating food not only restores food amounts and health, but more importantly, it increases attributes.
FEP
Every food has the Food Effect Points, delicate foods usually provide more FEP, which are more difficult to obtain. As shown in the picture: ginseng has a total FEP +12, which will add +3 FEP on each attribute.
When the total FEP exceeds the current attribute threshold, the attribute with the most FEP will increase, and all FEP will be reset to zero.
For example,the player have the FEP shown in the figure 1 below, his total FEP is 16 points, threshold 19 points, agility point 5, intelligence point 6, endurance point 4.
If you eat a berry jam, which has the FEP with +1 endurance and +2 agility. The agility point will be 7,which is the highest FEP among the four, this will cause increase on agility attribute, shown in figure 2
If you eat a bone soup, which has +3 strength and +3 intelligence, your intelligence point will reach the highest 9 points, and the total value will exceed the threshold, increasing intelligence. shown in figure 3
Note: Before the attribute increase, eating the same food will only provide points once, so the variety and quality of foods is the key to improving attributes.
Moreover,growing attributes evenly,as the threshold for attributes is determined by the character's highest attribute.
The growth of attributes in the game is slow, and any attribute growth is very precious and effective. Strength affects parrying efficiency and damage; agility affects max-energy, recovery speed, dodge distance; Intelligence affects magic attack power, magic defense and max-mana, while endurance affects max-health, defense, and toughness.
3 nightmares
  • Mood
Nightmares are the most painful thing in this game. The onset of nightmares is related to the mood of the character. At the highest mood (exalt), the interval of nightmares can be over 160 minutes, while at the lowest mood (despair), nightmares will come back in almost 15 minutes. Player can use food to control their mood, and many foods have mood bonuses, such as the ones shown in the pictures below.
These foods can easily push players' mood to happiness, and in this state, nightmares usually occur every 50-80 minutes

  • Suggestions
But the nightmare is finally coming, and how to defeat the endless nightmare monsters depends mainly on the player's combat moves. Here are a few suggestions:
1) Be prepared in advance.
Nightmares usually need to be prepared 3-5 minutes in advance. Return to your base and stay at home, prepare bandages and buff potions, hold a handy weapon, and wait for it to come.
2) Don't run around.
When a nightmare comes, stay inside the house. There are a lot of monsters in the black fog around the map border. They won't come to attack you actively, but some players can be chased and run around, then aggro a large group of monsters
3) Be brave.
Some people hide in the house and dare not go out. As a result, more and more monsters gather at the door, and the player eventually got killed by them when they enter the house.
Therefore, after cleaning up the monsters around you, you should bravely go out and eliminate the monsters that can be seen at the door.
4) Upgrading the house
This will reduce the number of monsters, and some walking monsters will wander around the door instead of actively attacking you.
5) If it doesn't work, just load the game and try again.

  • Nightmare gains
Successfully defeating nightmare monsters will recharge your altar, and many nightmare monsters will drop essence of guilty. After defeating the beholder boss, players can craft mana crystals from it on the alchemy table. In addition, large monsters that appear in the later stages of Nightmare often have some rare drop materials. The most important this is : You didn't die, your cocoon altar was saved...
4 Beginner Walkthrough
  • 1 Intro
In this chapter, players will inevitably die after encountering nightmare, so there is no need to waste the apples and medicinal powder found in the ruins. The chests in the ruins can be demolished and some woods can be recycled.
  • 2 Repair the Base
After arriving at the base, the first thing is to fix the fireplace and other facilities in the house. If the player maintains normal mood, the nightmare will arrive in about 50 minutes, around the fifth day of the game, we need to race against time to build up the farm and sow the seeds. There are some seeds in the farm crate beside the field, and smashing the scattered barrels will also yield some seeds. Plant these seeds as soon as possible. Digging potatoes and roasting them to fill your stomach.
Wheat is for baking various breads, beets can be used to cook various soups, and flax can be harvested for fiber and woven into bandages.
It should be noted that there is no need to cut too many trees here, which wastes time and energy. If you want wood, you should cut those fallen trunks on the ground, which may spawn yellow spiders, drop venom or nets.
  • 3 Southern Marsh
After repairing the base, you can go out to southern marsh. In the marsh, our main goals are chili seeds, herbs, and clay.Before leaving the base, bring the medicinal powder and grab a bigger weapon (hammer or spear), eat some foods and empty your bag.
Traveling south from the entrance, with the assistance of large chomper flowers, a large number of wild bees and small chompers are deadly. Lead the small monsters away from the large chomper and clear them first. Dodge the large chompers' range attacks, take advantage of your long weapon in the melee fight against them.They drops a lot, and usually after 1-2 kills you can have the seeds wanted.
Our second goal is the clay pit. Clay is used to make kilns and bricks, which are essential for smelting. We need to prepare it early. Generally, there will be some monsters guarding around the clay pit, clear the monsters nearby and dig. You need about 30-40 pieces. If you get tired, pick some lotus seeds or berries to eat.
Maybe it is difficult to dig this much in one go, you may run out of blood, your bag may be full. Just go home and clear your bag, replenish your blood at the altar, and then come back.
There are a large number of mushroom monsters on the west side of the marsh, which are easy to beat in the early game. After planting chili seeds, you can come and clean them up. They drops bark skins which can be cut into strings, and the power mushroom can be used to craft attack powder or eaten raw to increase strength.
  • 4 Northern grasslands
After picking enough clay and medicinal herbs, our next goal is to go hunting for hides to make bags and equipment. The main sources of hides are wild boars and wolves, and rabbits. At night, rummaging bushes may have a chance of spawning rabbits. Use your clubs and charge onto their path to knock them unconscious. They can be butchered to produce meats and hides, or be raised in the coop. The construction of the coop requires hay, usually after planting two cycles of wheat will yield enough hay.
After hunting wild boars and wolves for a period of time, you can accumulate four hides. Bring them to the base and build a drying rack to dry them. You can craft a pouch bag from 4 dried hides which increase the number of backpack slots. More dried hides can be tanned into leather using a tanning tube, which can be used to craft shoes, leather armor, etc.
  • 5 Nightmares Coming
Usually around the fifth night, nightmares will come. The intensity of the first nightmare is not high, so it is enough to deal with if you have prepared the following: spear or hammer weapons, a few healing powders, a few bandages.

  • 6 Mining
After preparing the clay kiln and burning enough bricks to build the furnace, we need to enter the mine. Preparation is required when you do mining: sufficient food, there is no need to worry about food attributes here. Just roast some potatoes or meats. Use a battle hammer as weapon to deal with the stone monsters next to the iron ore clusters; It's better to prepare a few more medicinal powders.
The mine is located in the northwest corner of our base. When you enter the cave and see the vines on the wall, remember to collect them. There is a chance of dropping melon seeds that can be planted in the field.
When fighting against stone monsters, you need to be cautious. It's easy to knock them back with a hammer, but it hurts a lot when them hit.
It is not recommended to rush to craft an iron sword from the iron you get. Instead, an iron axe and shovel can be used to cut down trees that were previously impossible. You can go to the northern grasslands to chop down 1-2 apple saplings and plant them in the tree farm in your base.
  • 7 Further developments
If you have reached here, the game is on the right track. You can cook more delicious food and craft stuff to equip yourself. After gathering 800 altar power, the altar will level up. With another 100 altar power, you can enter the cocoon and learn basic combat magic. Afterwards, you can challenge the Beholder boss in the northern Crypt and unfold the following plots, unlock more recipes and craft an iron pickaxe to crack the waterfall boulder and release river water on the west side of the base, then you can fish and set shrimp traps in the base.
Advanced Game Features
To explain more game features, just writing whatever comes to mind, it's not well organized.
  • Traveling between Dream Worlds
Each world in the game is a dream, there will be a region boss, and defeating it will lead to some plot, the boss will drop a dream, and by taking this dream to the dream catcher at the base, players can link to the dream and enter it. Don't worry about your base, it can travel with you through various dreams.
You can open the region map by clicking the button near the minimap (do this outside the base), which will display the location of the dream region boss. Our newborn area is the Lucid Dream, and the boss is the Beholder in the Crypt of the northern grassland.

  • Experiencing more game content
Actually, I don't really recommend to stay in Lucid dream without push the game progress, more crops, recipes need to be unlocked in the later dreams. The game hopes that players can explore the world, discover new stuffs, and unlock better recipes.
In the later dream regions, around 4-6 boss level monsters waiting for you to challenge in each world. Defeating them will make your base and character stronger.
So just boldly explore deeper dreams. In addition, the Cocoon altar at home is very important. It can help the player learn magics and unlock technologies. When the altar reaches level 3,it will have the power to teleport player to the beacons unlocked throughout the world, this is essential for the huge world map that follows.
  • Combats
1Restoring HP
The combats in the game are difficult, just the difficulty like "Dont Starve". After all, it's just a pixel farming game. No matter how terrifying the nightmare monster you see or how huge the boss is, it's actually the same thing. Remember: plant enough flax to make a lot of bandages on the worktable. You can always quickly replenish your Hp to continue the fighting with the boss.
2 Energy
Comparing to Hp, energy is the thing that you should really care. When dealing with bosses or difficult monsters, do not abuse energy. It is dangerous to hit the bottom of energy bar and you will lose the ability to keep safe distance with enemies or push the away. You can also craft energy powder or heroism potion to improve the efficiency of recovering energy. Some accessories also have this ability. There are other buffs helps too, when the altar reaches level 2, it will cast buff on player continuously when he is at home. Therefore, when fighting nightmares, your energy recovery and critical chance will be improved from this buff.
3 Break Power
The break power is a vital attribute when fighting, it determines if your hit can knock the mob down, Each weapon has its break power and high strength and some buff also enhance it.
4 Control
Starting from Happy Dream, the monsters will be tougher. They not only have better stats but also be harder to knock down. They usually will be weak to one type of damage. That is to say, using specific weapons will make it easier to hit hard. So it is best to try different attack weapon when you feel bad. For example, a battle hammer will be effective against stone monsters and huge crabs or bugs, a spear will be effective against animals, and the physical defense of ghosts in the deep forest is extremely high, but it is will be easy to be defeated if u use magics, and so on. In addition, there will be monsters that counter-attack your hits when they are angry, such as goblin shield warriors, so when attacking, don't be reckless and seize your opportunity.

For example, let’s say the stat limit in the game is 30. Even if a player’s stats are extremely unbalanced, like (29, 1, 1, 1), it can still be raised to (29, 29, 29, 29) by eating the enough combination of foods to make endurance from 1 - 29, agi 1- 29 and int 1- 29. However, once a stat reaches the limit—say (30, 1, 1, 1), it will no longer be possible to continue improving or adjusting stats.

Hi, looks like I didn’t explain this clearly in the guide. After increasing your stats, each food can once again provide FEP points. In other words, within a certain range, as long as you have enough food, you can raise all attributes without encountering any irreversible consequences. You just need to pay attention to the combination of attribute points when eating food—avoid constantly boosting the same attribute.

This range is related to the total variety of foods. In other words, if you’ve eaten every type of food in the game and the total points still aren’t enough to increase your attributes, then the player will reach the limit. Currently, the game has over 100 types of food, which is more than enough to increase your attributes to over 30. That level of stats is sufficient to complete the game.

Hi, I have a tricky question about... FEP. If I can only use each food once, there will be a huge limit to getting strength/stamina/dexterity/intelligence levels. If the game only adds a point to the attribute with the highest FEP points, what if I get a worse version of the character? What if it's not enough to defeat bosses and what if I don't get another chance to get more FEP?

I don't know if it's changed or not... I tried to get the same FEP level for strength, stamina, dexterity, and intelligence and get the +1 point to all of them. Yes, it was possible. But the game only takes the first of them and gives the point to the "strength". I'm not sure if that's the best solution. I wish I could get a point for all of them. If you have a different idea and wanna stay on it, ... couldn't there be some way to choose a specific attribute I want/will choose?

Not really,just slightly harder nightmare.But the difficulty of nightmares depends on other factors like game progress,char attributes and magic levels.Those factors have more weights than day pass.

cool, the beholder wrecked my face the first time I saw him, but I'm sure I'll figure him out. supplemental question: does the game punish you in any way for time passage (other than nightmares obviously), like do enemies or nightmares get harder with time?

You need to reset the lucid dream on the altar,it’s a newly added resource. To reset the lucid dream,you need to defeat the beholder in north grassland,then you can unlock the button on the altar.

I feel like I checked everywhere, do you happen to know where turtles are in the 3rd dream, I already beat all the other bosses and crafted the other gear
