Description
"The Smolensk offensive started on 7 August at 6:30 am (with a preliminary bombardment starting at 4:40 am) with a breakthrough towards Roslavl. Three armies were committed to this offensive: the 5th Army, the 10th Guards Army, and the 33rd Army. However, the attack quickly encountered heavy opposition and stalled. German troops attempted numerous counterattacks from their well-prepared positions, supported by tanks, assault guns, and the fire of heavy guns and mortars." - Joni 'Xendance' Mäkelä

My rendition of the map and attack includes remnants of an early spearhead on the outskirts of the village, followed by a failed armored assault by 2 German assault guns and several tanks. Germans tried to soften the ridge line with heavy bombardment but have failed to make a real dent in the defenses. Initiative must be taken by a strong German Commander to take the charge... or a resilient Soviet must stand his ground to keep the invaders at bay! The gamemode is frontline so be wary of giving up ground you desperately need to succeed! This also means if at first an attack falters, you will be able to try again and again!

This mission is geared towards playing as a German squad leader. A half-track is available as an armored pillbox in order to get close to the Bolshevik positions without taking too much return fire. Soviets are quick to respond to attacks and do not fear working themselves up close into your face! Armored support is available for use by the player on both sides during the final phase as an ode to RO 2. The tank spawns are far off and require driving to the fight by the occupants!

Squad loadouts are based on RO Ostfront weaponry, this is also why the mission is set as 16v16 (with a new wave spawning so quickly the action never stops once the firing begins). Officer's have binoculars instead of sidearms as a functional choice. I feel handguns are underpowered in this game and I avoid having to RP with them. The map remains balanced for the same number of bodies as the original with a few extra. Feel free to kick up the proportional amount of attackers or defenders!

TIPS AND TACTICS:
-As attackers you can decide whether to go in with armored support with the help of a Halftrack, this is however optional. The run up to the first farm houses can be very heated if you are slow to close the distance and failure to capture the objective will lead to a Soviet counter-attack!
-Keep your fire quick and accurate as the Soviets are eager to not give up any ground! Spawn waves are quick. Once one wave is dealt with the other is already on its way. Stay near Soviet Ammunition dumps to stay supplied during the onslaught to ensure you do no run dry. (Ammo crates are mostly placed within the map editor and thusly are hidden from player knowledge- Look around and find what you need!)

Grand thanks to all who continue to play these missions even after I cannot stand to look at them sometimes. I have terrible anxiety and usually stop playing the mission once I have released it. I will try to continually make all of my missions better and better! I promise, and that means something coming from me!

Mission is remastered now, I have spent a lot of timing balancing gameplay based on how the AI handles itself. Germans now are able to make advances easier and Soviets will not hold in cheap spots and will instead be more reactive. :thestar: Merry Christmas!

@Sparkwitt many thanks! Remaking this map was a joy and brought me back so many memories. The first time I burned out an MG barrel in RO was on Smolensk Stalemate:thestar:!

A brilliant reproduction of the ro1 map (maybe even better), you have done a stellar job!!! I spent many hours on this gem of a game at the weekends in mid 2000's, thank you!

@FenFenScreeScree AI is indeed such dogshit. I do play kind of sweat and rely a lot on staying hunkered down by ammo boxes while holding back soviet waves. Push the Frontline is also a bit difficult sometimes as you need to clear out any inner resistance before the timer will even start the capture. I can set a mission capture to be 15 seconds but with these spawn rates the fight can still go on for minutes.

Okay, new update is great. Don't get me wrong, I was able to get over the hill before, but it took hours and several lives, plus lots of 420-mlg-sigma-gamer sweat moves /j

now i'm able to get over the hill much easier. Not like.... MUCH much easier, but it's not a complete bloodbath. Unfortunately, this game's AI isn't that great at applying tactics beyond "human wave", but for now it works out.

@FenFenScreeScree ,apologies for difficulties in the mission! I have very little time to play after creating and usually give it the go then release. Germans are the attackers hence little defenses. There are many ammo crates placed within the village, though they are placed in map editor so thusly do not show on maps. Emplacements for the soviets are easily neutralized with grenades within the village, the ridge MG is flanked. Soviets get one mortar. Will tweak but the mission is largely meant to be hard as it is made to my play style. Also anyone not utilizing the half track is seriously putting themselves at a disadvantage.

Stalemate my ass. This mission is clearly rigged in favor of the Soviets. There's no defensive emplacements and no artillery support for the Germans (because the mortars won't spawn unless the player spawns on it), and no ammo resupplies either in loadouts or on the map; the soviets, meanwhile, have DOZENS of MG emplacements, mortars and artillery.
