From Point A to Point B
In the most basic sense...it doesn't matter. All you need to know is that they have numbers. The numbers always increase. And you will be at layer 444 to meet the void gods. As explained by this:

What, it doesn't make sense?

Layers 001, 002, 097, 223, 397, and 444 are unavoidable.

Certain layers, Void Layers, are optional but they lead to more fun and lore. More information about said lore will be released on update V 1.1

Void layers can only be entered through red portals. They are like regular dungeons except the enemies are more fierce. However, each void layer has a secret passage way. In V1.1 these secrets will expand. There will be periodic updates. That is not your concern.

Void Beasts will kill you upon touch. When you see them, run. You will not get feedback. You can kill them but you will need very powerful spells.

Regardless of what entities you run into, they are just prep work to meet the void gods. They are a mystery, but you can kill them.
Controls

I cannot explain more than this. Liminal Void is a first person PC game. This genre has been done to death.

What makes it different is that it is fundamentally a horror with arcade rpg elements. Everything is stats. You will be doing a lot of soul switching, spell switching, checking sigils, etc...

It is a lot at once. You could pretend it is a shooter.

But Liminal Void is not a first person shooter. The code wasn't written for that. More of a first person horror with spell combat.

The lock on system (V) is great for people who don't like to aim. I was thinking of the VATS system from Fallout.

Your souls are guns. Your spells are firing modes. Hope that makes sense now.
Loopy Mode
Keep it on. That's the correct way. But gamers get a little upset when things start to change slowly in the background where they have no feedback but they definitely feel it. What I call horror mechanics can also be stressful to some gamers. I get it. But Loopy Mode is canon. Any objection is a skill issue.

As you play Liminal Void, you will notice your movement speed and physics slowly changing. This basically happens as you pass the Liminal Layer and get exposed to some entities. Especially after you erased them from existence. Time slows down, it can get fat. Things get glitchy! And suddenly, you feel lighter. Your character walks faster than they run? Its all randomized. The possibilities are endless...but the hints are there.

Liminal Void is not for everyone. It's for people who like to let loose. When things change, they roll with it. Loopy Mode is pretty much about that.
The Fast, the slow, and the canon.
Fast Way:

Press K repeatedly, zoom past dialog, repeat, get to 444, try to kill void gods

Slow Way:

Walk around, explore, kill a bunch of entities for sigils, try chill mode

Canon:

Refer to first image in the article. Get all the Void Layers.
FAQs
It's not firingYour either have no sigils or you are on spell cooldown

Spell cooldown? Some spells are powerful but they will force you to wait after firing. Better make them count. Pretend it's a big gun with a long reload time.

I need sigils for spells?Yes, sigils are basically the floppy disks that give you points. Sigils are used for spells. The spell description of the currently selected spell will tell you the cost.

I lost all my sigils!Ahh the Liminal Layer...you likely
a) landed "lose sigils" death lottery result after staying in the current dungeon for too long
b) used a "frenzy" spell, which causes entities to kill each other at the cost of your sigils

special skills?yeah, press e. the description on the top left will tell you what it does and the cost. pressing g switches it

I can't soul snatch
Toggle lock on (V) or keep moving around until cursor shakes. You'll need to take time and aim throughout the enemy to find the sweet spot to soul snatch.
