Disclaimer
This guide is mainly to display the different types of reticles so you can better choose what fit your needs. However, I try to explain how aiming and the reticle works but I didn't do any extensive testing, just the bare essencials to be able to make this guide. If any information is wrong, please leave a comment below and feel free to kick me in the nuts.
Target States
When aiming with a firearm, you have three possilbe target states:
  • No Valid Target : Aiming at nothing, shooting won't hit anything.

  • Valid Target (Objects) : Aiming at something, shooting may hit objects e.g. cars.

  • Valid Target (People) : Aiming at someone, shooting may hit people e.g. zombies.

Having your reticle on any valid target state doesn't guarantee you'll hit your target, it just indicates that you are aiming at something or someone.

Depending on what target state your reticle is, it may change colors, which I'll go further below.
Reticle Options
Here are the four main reticle components and what they do:
  • Aim Texture : If ON, will always be visible. If you have no valid targets, will be white. If you have a valid target, will shift colors from Red (Bad) to Green (Good), to represent your chances to hit your target. The color shift might be related to the "bad" highlight and "good" highlight options in accessibility. (Need to confirm)

  • Reticle Texture : If ON, will always be visible. If you have no valid targets, will be the same color as the "reticle no target color" option. If you have a valid target, will be the same color as the "reticle target color" option. (Default color white)

  • Valid Target Reticle Texture : If ON, will only be visible when you have a valid target. The color will be the same as the reticle texture option. The main difference between "reticle texture" and "valid target reticle texture" is that the former only appears if you are aiming at something, so if you prefer a cleaner crosshair you can use that option. If both are turned on, "reticle texture" will override the "valid target reticle texture" option.

  • Crosshair : If ON, will always be visible. Will always be white color. Will open or close depending on your chances to hit your target and if you are moving.
Reticle Opacity
Be aware that depending on what value your Iso Cursor Visibility option is set to, your reticle may have lower opacity or even disappear completely. The images below where taken with Iso Cursor Visibility at 75% and Aiming Level 5.

Closing Notes
In case anything changes from the current state, maybe I'll try updating this guide as the game gets patched or the stable version of B42 releases.

If I made any mistakes regarding game mechanics, order of the tables or grammar feel free to correct me down below.

Make sure you are playing on the Unstable Build 42 and have a gun equipped. If it still doesn't show up maybe your Iso Cursor Visibility is too low, try setting it to 30% or higher. Other than that, you may have mods that are conflicting with the crosshair.
