Mahi Ballistic Missile Submarine

Description: The Mahi is a Ballistic Missile submarine designed for the deployment of ballistic missiles onto shore and at sea surface targets. She is equipped with no fewer than 24 'Koncora" Anti-Ship missiles. The Steel Striders have lovingly nicknamed these missiles, "Reef-makers" for their immense warhead and menacing appearance. The Submarine is also equipped with a computerized dual magnification all in one attack and observation periscope. Additional masts contain an SSLQ-2200 'Eavesdropper' ESM mast, a satellite communication mast, and a SRM-30 Radar Mast. She is also fitted with 6 Type 300 'Gigantor' active homing torpedoes specifically designed to shatter a ship's bulk into several pieces. Other than offensive firepower this ship is built with several sonar decoys of various sizes and a mulitpurpose towed array capable of either a passive towed sonar array or large sonar scrambler. Along both the starboard and port sides Mahi is equipped with no fewer than 110 'Spike' torpedo interceptors. All in all this submarine is designed for one thing, sneaking into territorial waters and raining Down her nuclear compliment. (ICBMs Sold separately)

History: The Mahi Ballistic Missile Submarine had a rough development cycle. The Free Eriwick Republic was deadlocked into a stalemate with their former ally, The Onyx Watch. Their large castle ships decemated early surface fleets of the republic only to be encircled and cut off from supply by Republican Billfish submarine wolfpacks. The stalemate was bleeding the coffers of each faction dry every single month. Worryingly the deep freeze of the Cold Loch Winters mean't that their harbors were becoming more usable and with the Lochforge worker's strike being, "disposed of" mean' t that time was running out for the Republic to hold its ground. Seeing the potential for their submarine fleet, A brilliant former Deep Water Guard Field Marshal by the name of Robert Oleson Wrote to FER chairman Jacobson, "Rgarding the increasing effectiveness of our submarine fleet against the Watch I urge you to consider the deployment of an ambush submarine capable of shattering Castleship fleets. The staggering amount of casualites on the surface could be mitigated by a breakthrough design. Emil, those 35,000 men sacrificed for our cause should not die in vain, but be remembered as heros for our homeland." -F.M. Oleson. Emil remembered hearing stories of Oleson and his ability to use flanking attacks to encircle and destroy entire fleets of Watch ships using his Ransack and Plunderer ships, elevating them to legendary status among the Guardsmen of the Eriwick. Oleson was more than a rag tag pirate, he was a chivalrous man as well, famously under-reporting the amount of goods plundered from captured Watch ships to give to local harbor cities in need. He even let his captured Watch crewmen return to their families via connections with the Lightning Hoods, who often gave the Onyx Watch "Humanitarian aid".

After the Fall of the Deep Water Guard Emil was approached by Oleson, and the "River Rat" happily accepted such a talented Field marshal into his ranks. Anyways, back to the Mahi. After Oleson's letter, Chairman Jacobson commisioned the construction of a large ballistic missile submarine. However the design was so large that even Guinnesson Island could not fit a hull that large. Sandtrap Island, the Eriwick's Most Northwestern island was chosen for a new drydock capable of holding the Ship's 174m bulk was commisioned. Diplomatic channels were opened between the FER and the Steel Striders, who were more than happy to supply the young nation with supplies, men and tooling.Resources were not a problem for the design since over the course of the stalemate with the Watch, they had accumulated Billions of Doubloons worth of material. Over the next few weeks construction continued unitl it came time develop the Koncora Missile. Obviously lacking a Nuclear program meant a stopgap measure was needed. So the guidence computer and radar from the Watersnake's 'Fang II' were reverse engineered and scaled up to the new diameter. Additional Arms dealing from the Steel Striders meant a proper ejection system for subsurface firing and tooling for the propulsion system. Steel Strider Chief General For The Aid of Young Nations (A.Y.N) reported, "The ability for such an impoverished people to reverse engineer produce such complex systems in such a short amount of time is nothing short of bewildering." He exclaimed, during a news interview about the foreign aid package.

Another problem surfaced during Mahi's construction, the unstable ground the drydock was built into caused one of the side walls to partially collapse. The collapse killed several workers and took weeks of repair and clearing the debris. During The Sub's sea trials one of her Type 300 torpedo loading cranes broke free from its shackles crushing two sailors and injuring another. After the incident, the damaged torpedo began leaking acid from its battery banks and the exposed lithium combusted sparking a massive blaze. Damage control struggled with the fire and the ship was ordered to surface by her captain, Markus Lemeu. Upon surfacing the water pumps were engaged to flush out the battery acid in a desperate measure. Damage control was able to control the blaze but not without men sustaining both severe physical and chemical burns. After the incident additional fire suppression systems were installed. The next order of business was the torpedo intercept software, they would often target friendly munitions. To solve this problem Chairman Jacobson contacted a former Lighning Hoods technician, Malory Holden who had developed the torpedo interceptor systems for the White Flayer's "Judgement" Class Heavy Cruiser. After sharing some files with the engineering team all 110 torpedo interceptors worked like a charm.

Mahi's maiden voyage was to avoid Onyx Watch surface patrols and enter the Lochs themselves. Unexpected snowstorms caused a late freeze to the Lochforge Harbors, which left entrapped castleships immobilized in ice. One of these ships was the Prized, "Stronghold" Battleship, the largest battleship ever employed on Neter. Mahi Broke through the Ice and Fired her compliment of "Koncora" Missiles at the surrounding factory districts, warships and even icebreakers. These raids happened for 3 weeks picking off each refinery and ship with a wall of anit-ship missiles. The damage sustained due to these attacks slowed down the deployment of fresh warships to the frontline causing the stalemate to be broken and the Republic at their doorstep.
