What is PvP and how do lobbies work?

So what is PvP? PvP refers to playing matches against other players using Sportnet's Online Lobbies.

Sportnet can be found in the in-game pause menu after you have progressed far enough into the single player story. From here you can select Private Match to create or join a lobby. I'll talk about the Team Setup menu in the section below and I won't be covering Trading.

Once you create a lobby the 4 digit lobby code will be found at the top middle of the screen. You will need to share that code to whoever wants to join as they need to enter the code when selecting Join Game.

Each lobby can have different rules which the host can change by selecting Edit Rules. You can use whatever rules you want as long as both players agree, but many players choose to use the default rules with two changes: Points to Win set to 3 and Ban Duplicates set to On.

Right now there is no automated matchmaking so if you're looking for other people to play with you can use the official Wishes Unlimited Discord server to find matches (link is at the bottom).
Team Setup menu
In the Sportnet menu and in lobbies there is an option for Team Setup. This lets you save and use different teams regardless of which beasties are currently in your party. In Team Setup the team which will be used in online lobbies will be shown at the top, with two columns below it: My Teams and Other Teams.

My Teams will always have your In-Game Party listed but you also have the option of saving a New Team. This will save your current In-Game Party as another team so you can use it in online lobbies regardless of if you change your In-Game Party later.

If you want to try out some teams other players have made you can select New Download under Other Teams. All you need is a code for the team you want to try out, and you can browse team codes on the https://beastieball.info/ website under Teams > Team Viewer (huge thanks to Jdavis). Keep in mind that some teams might have been made on old patches so some beasties may be missing moves, in which case it's most likely worth not using and finding a different team instead.
Tips for beginners
Before you take your team into PvP there are a few things to watch out for. When using the default lobby rules beasties are set to level 50 regardless of whether they are higher or lower, so don't worry if your beasties are low level.

Next, each beastie has a Coached value which affects its base stats, with a max of 100%. As of today it is NOT automatically scaled up like levels do, so make sure you get your coached value for your beasties close to 100%. A beastie can have its coached value raised by playing matches with it in single player or by using items found at certain post-game shops.

Also, each beastie can also have specific stats increased by training at a gym or playing single player matches (depending on its on-field partner). Every 4 points of training will increase a stat by 1. You can put up to 120 training points into a single stat giving a total increase of 30, and you can only have 240 training point across all of a beastie's stats. It will show the stat increases next to each stat in the menu as well as show how close you are to the training cap.

How do you pick which stats to train? Usually you want to max out the highest attacking stat and invest into the lowest defenses. I would recommend beginners have at least one attack move on each beastie, but if you don't have any attacks then you can max two defenses instead. There might be times when even maxing out a beastie's weakest defensive state isn't enough to avoid getting wiped in one hit, but it takes experience to know when to invest in your other stats instead. Regardless of what you choose make sure you train your beasties!
Other resources
The Wishes Unlimited Discord server (link: https://discord.gg/wishesultd) is the best place to both find other people to play with as well as find more information about the game. There are a lot of friendly people willing to help and answer questions!

If you're looking for quick references to all of the beasties and moves in the game https://beastieball.info/ is a great resource.

I don't know if I'll make any more guides but I hope this helps some people get started! :)
