Introduction

In Valkyria Chronicles after you complete the Initial Cutscene for Chapter 03: Vasel Urban Warefare, the HeadQuarters is unlocked with 4 different locations available immediately to use.

Barracks
This is Valkyria Chronicle's equip and inventory screen, allowing a soldier's stats and Potentials to be checked, and weapons swapped out with any others available for their class.

Command Room

This is where the roster of recruits can be checked over and the composition of the team altered. A recruit's Potentials can be be viewed here, though this is limited to their Personal Potentials; the only way to determine their Battle Potentials is to put them on the squad roster and then check them in the barracks tab.

New recruits are gradually added to the roster throughout the game; the order is randomised. Certain recruits, however, can only be unlocked under special conditions.

Training Field
This area allows Experience to be allocated to level up the various infantry classes, unlocking new potential stats or Squad Leader Orders

Research & Development Facility

A Facility allowing the player to spend their Ducats on upgrading weapons & armour for infantry and buying parts for tanks, which the guide will be focused on. Parts & Weapons are gradually unlocked over the course of the game.
Tank Upgrade Basics

Tank Upgrades are purchasable in the Research & Development Section of Headquarters, gradually becoming available as you progress through the campaign. Three Special parts are held by enemy Tank Aces (Elite Units). Tank Upgrades come in two different versions:

General Upgrades

General Upgrades are a tank's equivalent of infantry levels, Edelweiss containing upgrades to the body, armour and gun while the Shamrock has Body, armour and three seperate turets which are upgraded individually. The Edelweiss has three 'uiltimate' upgrades to the gun, body and armour but only one can be fitted at a time.

Opitional Part Upgrades

Both the Edelweiss and Shamrock have a grid assigned to Optional System Parts which are accessible via the "Outfit Tank" Option in the R&D Facility Menu and each part takes up a set number of squares on the grid. Generally, the more powerful the part is, the larger it will be. Any number of parts can be taken provided they can be fit into the tanks Grid. Parts cannot be interchanged between tanks; Both the Shamrock and the Edelweiss has a seperate set, with parts for the Shamrock tending to be larger than parts for the Edelweiss with the same effect while also being more expensive.

Block Sizes are given as width X height. Edelweiss starts with a 4x3 upgrade grid that is upgraded to 5x4 when the Reinforced Body upgrade is purchased. Shamrock's upgrade grid is alway's 3x4.
Edelweiss Upgrades

Gun Upgrades

These upgrade each of Edelweiss primary weapons, also changing the name of the weapon on the outfit screen.

  • Barrel Protector:
    Effect: Main gun range +200
    Cost: 1,500 Ducat
  • Anti-Armour Rounds:
Effect: Main gun +60 vs Person, +200 vs Armour
    Cost: 4,200 Ducat
  • Increased Payload:
Effect: Mortar +120 vs Person, +50 vs Armour, +10 Blast
    Cost: 7,700 Ducat
  • Enhanced Gun:
Effect: Machine gun +13 vs Person , +9 vs Armour

  • Heavy Tank Gun:
Effect: Machine gun +12 vs Person, +7 vs Armour
    Cost: 21,300 Ducat
  • Piercing Rounds:
Effect: Main gun +60 vs Person, +200 vs Armour

    Cost: 38,800 Ducat
  • Extended Barrel (final upgrade)
    Effect: Main gun range +100
    Cost: 45,300 Ducat

Body Upgrades

Upgrades to the body, improving hitpoints and treadmill defence. Defence is subtracted from damage of all incoming attacks before any hitpoints are deducted. If the total defence rating is higher than damage dealt then the attack deals no damage to hitpoints at all. For example, if the Edelweiss' tread defence is 150 and it is hit by three attacks dealing 150 damage, it will lose no tread hitpoints; if it is hit by three attacks dealing 151 damage, it will only lose 3 tread hitpoints.

  • Additional Armour:
Effect: Body HP +300, Tread HP +200, Tread Def +50
    Cost: 1,700 Ducat
  • Rivet Construction:
    Effect: Body HP +100
    Cost: 7,100 Ducat
  • Reinforced Body:
Effect: Body HP +300, Tread HP +200, Tread Def +50, AP +100, part grid enlarged to 5 x 4
    Cost: 13,800 Ducat
  • Point Soldering:
    Effect: Body HP +100
    Cost:21,400 Ducat
  • Plane Soldering:
    Effect: Body HP +100
    Cost:29,600 Ducat
  • Reinforced Armour (final upgrade)
Effect: Body HP +300, Tread HP +200, Tread Def +50
    Cost: 34,000 Ducat

Reinforced Armour is probably the best all-around upgrade of the three "final" upgrades; +100 range isn't really worth the cost (for reference, the range of a hand grenade is 90), and it would take ten separate hits for body defence +30 to save 300 HP of damage.

Critical Defense (green)

The Edelweiss' critical hit rating is 10 minus the effect of these parts divided by one hundred. The resulting number is the multipler applied to damage to the tank's radiator; the minimum is 1.

    Block size: 4 x 1

Firing Calculator renders Stereoscopic Sight redundant, since Firing Calculator + Periscope + Bulletproof Visor fit into the same space with one block spare, while providing +32% accuracy instead of +25%. It's readily possible for the Edelweiss to fit Bulletproof Visor + Periscope + Monocle Sight + Rotating Periscope + Firing Calculator into the 5 x 4 grid, for a +60% accuracy bonus with three blocks remaining; Extra Magazine and one of the 1x1 parts will fit into these gaps.
