1. Savegame location
Your Heroes of Hammerwatch II savegame location can be found in the game's folder. The default path is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Heroes of Hammerwatch 2\saves
2. Meaning of Numbers and File-Type
The HPS files are your Heroes of Hammerwatch II Profile Saves. Each number stands for a profile number. So most players start with just having e.g.

0.hps
0_1.hps
0_2.hps
and so on

It looks like this

The first number stands for profile number.
So 0.hps is the savegame for profile 0

The second number is a a backup file.
So 0_1.hps is backup number 1 of profile 0.
3. Using Backup-Savegame to Restore
In the unlikely event that your savegame is corrupted by a cheater or otherwise, you can use the backup savegames to restore your main savegame.

To do this, first make a copy of the entire "saves" folder and place it on your desktop for safekeeping. Then delete every savegame except the one you want to restore.

For example, if backup number two, file 0_2.hps, is the file you want to restore, because it was last saved half an hour before the corruption occurred, then delete every file except that one.

Since 0_2.hps is the only file, rename it to 0.hps - making it your main savegame for profile 0.

Check if this worked, otherwise try an older backup of the files you copied to the desktop beforehand.
4. Steam Cloud Savegame Support
Steam Cloud savegames were not available at launch, as the developers added them a few days later with the third patch - Build 118 on 21.01.2025. To use Steam Cloud savegames, follow these steps:

Step 1
Access the Save Profiles menu from the main menu

You should have only profile 0 at the beginning.

Step 2
Click on the copy profile symbol and confirm the prompt with Enter

Step 3
To use the Steam Cloud savegame, switch to it via the Home button, making it your default starting savegame.

Done. That was it.

From now on Steam Cloud will automatically synchronise the game for you between your devices. All what is left to do is, when you start the game on another device, you just select the now existing profile 0 (cloud) as default profile (Home button as shown in Step 3).

You can check after closing the game and letting Steam Cloud do its job by visiting the Steam Cloud storage website: https://steamhost.cn/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=619820

5. Savegame location (Steam Cloud)
Your Heroes of Hammerwatch II Steam Cloud savegame location can be found in Steam's userdata folder. The default path is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\YOUR_STEAM_ID\619820\remote\saves

Usually the correct folder with Your Steam ID is the only folder which can be found in userdata. Should you share your PC with other players, you can use this guide I made for another game to find out your personal Steam ID, which you can use to complete the path mentioned above.

6. Using Backup-Savegame to Restore (Steam Cloud)
The process to make use of backup savegames is identical to the process for local savegames. With one exception: you need to disable Steam Cloud support for the game first, otherwise Steam Cloud will forcefully correct any alteration you made to the savegames. To do so

Right-click on the game in your Steam Library -> Properties -> Steam Cloud -> turn it off

After restoring your savegame successfully, I recommend making an additional local savegame duplicate via the savegame profile manager.

Once everything is back a-okay, you can turn on Steam Cloud support again. It will automatically synchronise with the newer and corrected savegame/ask you for confirmation eventually. The savegame duplicate you made locally is for backup purposes, in case it fails.
Good to Know
If you uninstall your game, the savegames and game's setting will not be removed from your PC.

Hence when troubleshooting issues, reinstalling will not do much if any faulty settings just get reloaded. You would need to delete the HWR2.exe.cfg file manually if you wish to reset your game's settings.
Bonus Tip
To check your Steam Cloud savegames use
https://steamhost.cn/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=619820

If you are concerned that your savegame is corrupted, you can also use this to download your savegame from your last session. Just make sure you do not close your game so that Steam Cloud does not overwrite the old data with the new corrupted data. But rest assured, you now know that automatic backups are created for each savegame profile.

Stay calm, do not panic, know that it can be restored to a certain extent.
