Day two of the Battle of Iwo Jima opened with poor weather conditions in the face of cold rain. Just beyond the 4th Marine Division’s beach head was the Rock Quarry. Here Japanese forces had dug into the rocks a series of reinforced concrete bunkers on the high ground. The Marines would have to assault the Quarry head on. It was in this battle that two of the worst cases of friendly fire in the Battle of Iwo Jima would take place. It would be days before the Marine’s would finally take the Rock Quarry after suffering tremendous losses in men.
