After the capture of Mount Suribachi on February 23rd, the Marine’s begin to reorient their lines. The 5th Marine Division takes the western end of the island to face north while the 3rd Marine Division and 4th Marine Division on the center and eastern side of the island respectively. The Marine command plans to take all three divisions and drive north and push the Japanese into the sea. However, facing them is the main Japanese defensive line. On February 24th 1945, the newly arrived 3rd Marine Division makes the initial attack up the center of the second airfield on Iwo Jima. Over a period of the following days the Marine advance is slow and facing stiff resistance. The 9th Marine Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division would not take the second airfield until February 27th, 1945.
