On February 27th, 1945 the 4th Marine Division attacks the eastern portion of the main Japanese defensive line. Here the terrain along the Motoyama plateau is watched over by the looming Hill 382 and the small but highly fortified position called by the Marines “The Turkey Knob”. The area to the south of the turkey knob was called “The Amphitheater” for its terrain shape. The Marines attack north through Minami Village and into the Amphitheater. The Japanese would stop the American advance here and fighting for the area would swing back and forth until March 10th 1945 when the Marines finally overwhelmed the Turkey Knob and took Taichiiwa Point on the eastern coast.
