March 7th, 1945. The 3rd Marine Division moves broadly from the south and west to Hill 362C. During heavy fighting the Marines accidentally take the wrong hill on the night of March 6th but fight all day on March 7th and capture the hill after heavy fighting. The 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines had finally seized the anchor of Kuribyashi’s main defensive line. The morning after the Marines seized Hill 362C, the 3rd Marine Division finally reached the northeast coast which finally split the Japanese defenders into two separate pockets of resistance. One in the north, and one to the southeast at the Turkey Knob. The loss of Hill 362C causes a break in the Japanese hierarchy between General Tadamichi Kuribyashi and Captain Samaji Inouye. On March 8th, 1945 the Naval Infantry under Captain Samaji Inouye would launch the largest Banzai of the entire campaign.
