March 8th, 1945. After the loss of Hill 362C, Japanese naval officer Captain Samaji Inouye takes it upon himself and orders the remainder of the Naval Landing Force in the southeastern side of the island to launch an attack against the American lines. The Japanese move north from the Motoyama Plateau and past the Turkey Knob and Hill 382 which is still holding out. Their main objective they are told is to break out to the north, and swing south past the second and first airfields and retake Mount Suribachi but most men know this will be a one-way trip. They launch successive waves of infantry attacks screaming “Banzai!” as they attack the 4th Marine Division’s lines. US Naval artillery off shore as well as Marine Mortar and small arms fire wreaks havoc on the attacking Japanese. By morning it is all over and the Marine’s count up 784 dead Japanese with the cost of 340 Marine casualties with 90 dead.
