On the same day as the capture of Hill 382, the 4th Marine Division attacks broadly and finally captures The Amphitheater and Turkey Knob and drives north east to the coast and takes Taichiiwa Point. By March 16th the Americans had reduced the pocket on the eastern side of the island. On March 11th, 1945, the US Navy Aircraft carriers depart Iwo Jima leaving control of air support to the 506th Fighter group flying P-51D Mustang’s out of the newly captured Second Airfield.
