March 16th, 1945. After the 3rd Marine Division took Hill 362C, the remaining Japanese had been forced into a pocket to the southwest of Hill 362C and near the third airfield. From March 8th to March 16th, the Marines fought to clear the pocket of Japanese in a rocky, craggy, hilly area. Slowly and at great cost, the Japanese inside what came to be known as “Cushman’s Pocket” were eliminated.
