March 24th, 1945. After Kuribyashi’s HQ was destroyed and the last defenders inside had dispersed, the remaining Japanese soldiers made their way south to the second airfield. So few of these men would end up surviving that its not known how they managed to avoid detection. But just before midnight, the Japanese soldiers gave a loud ‘Banzai!’ and jumped to their feet. They quickly overrun the outer defenses and charge into the camp filled with sleeping USAAF pilots and soon to depart US Marines. Hearing the fighting take place, an African American shore battery unit responded and helped push back the Japanese attack. It is believed that Tadamichi Kuribyashi personally led this attack. In the aftermath, the US Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment would take over for the Marine’s in clearing the many caves and tunnels that honeycombed the island. Hardened veterans of the campaigns on Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the 147th would continue fighting for months on Iwo Jima. They would not leave the island until the Summer of 1945.
