Root's Dream Diary!
By Vicis
!!!SPOILERS!!! This guide is for Root's dream diary. It is highly recommended that you figure out the diary for yourself first. This game contains many secrets and I only wish to guide unaware players toward them, not spoil them.

!!!SPOILERS!!!
If you didn't read the description, let it be known, this guide contains spoilers for information that you could enjoy finding yourself. If you are aware of this, and wish to continue, enjoy!

That aside, I've decided to separate this out with the numbers first so that you can exclusively use those without spoiling everything for yourself accidentally.
General information: the codes
During Root's diary, you'll find that the most important screen you come across will be the one with the three numbers. The possible codes for them are as follows, and it is recommended that you go through them in the order I've arranged.

Similar to (presumably) all the other dream diaries, this one is a puzzle that can only be finished with the correct moves.

The starter code - 327
(obtained from breaking the percentage and listening to the phone. I am unsure exactly if it is chance, or a predetermined amount of calls.)

The puzzle codes
(obtained from the previous room)
1. 676
2. 066
3. 518

The last code - 124
(obtained from code 518's room after meeting the requirements)

Other story codes:
721 - He yet lives! Deer man is just a cool guy like that.
(found in 676's room, through the textures above Root)
048 - Ah It's best girl Luna! And she's dropping some juicy lore tidbits
(credit to Dave on steam, acquired by talking to rugs in 0-30% with some time travel trickery.)

Fun/Interesting codes - try them for yourself!
(these are the random codes I've managed to find, and hopefully, if there is more, some others may also find some. I will credit users for this, though i'm sure someone like myself will just brute force the 1000 possible combinations. That said, i'd like to know if there are links between these codes and other places in the game. It should also be noted that it's entirely possible that codes could be added/moved/removed between updates so that means that if any new codes are found in an update after 19/02/25, I'll still add them in!)
000 - The Void. literally. only root and her reflection exists here.
404 - ERX0R
808 - come join us at the bar? (found in Noire's dream diary - credit to Thomas066 on steam)
999 - The End? Credits roll here. It's beautiful, just like the game. We could be here all day...

I am unsure as to if these codes are required to be done in order, as this is also the order i found them in. I will be testing this later unless someone else is able to give confirmation.

Bonus while this game is still new, if you like 3 digit numbers, and want to know if it works or not, you should try them, and add them to the list!
As it turns out, someone did brute force them as of the 19th of Feb, 2025. Everyone say a thank you to steam user -dummie- for taking the time and effort to confirm that we do in fact have the full list of 11 total codes already!

The list of non functioning numbers is as follows so far the list of numbers tried and failed before the above mentioned user looked at 989 entries of sheer nothingness!:
- 001 to 010 (rip 007)
- 069 (nice)
- 080 (balanced as all things should be.)
- 101 (lol)
- 104 (common US police code)
- 111
- 143 (i love you shortened to ILY and converted to numbers)
- 169 (a cube number, palindrome, AND the sum of 7 consecutive numbers)
- 200
- 222
- 314 (if only we had some Pi at the end of time...)
- 333 (the angels cry, for there is no faith at the end of this particular world)
- 365 (days in a year)
- 366 (days in a leap year)
- 411 (means information apparently)
- 420 (there is apparently no recreation mind altering substances either, though those gummy bears have a kick somehow)
- 444
- 555
- 666 (the devils cry too, for there is nothing left to burn but themselves)
- 683 (the inverse of the starting code 327, not factoring in 0s)
- 707 (lol, but upside down now!)
- 777 (JACKPOT, MORE VOID!)
- 827 (the inverse of the starting code)
- 850 (a perfect credit score apparently, I've never had one heh)
- 888
- 933 (the inverse of puzzle code 2, 066)
- 995 to 998

Alot of numbers were gleaned from the following reddit post, if you'd like to see exactly who came up with them. This post has nothing to do with myself or NO-SKIN, and was just something i came across when trying to figure out some of the hidden combinations.

Unlocking - Root's dream diary
In order to actually use all these codes, I'm assuming that you have Root's dream diary unlocked! This is not a guide for the process of doing that, hopefully someone else decides to write that guide. However, i will say this, in order to unlock Root's dream diary you need to beat the deer headed man with Root (requires talking to deer man and agreeing to his challenge before 60%), and then also fight and win against meadow at 148%. My biggest tips there would be to get the hang of Root's gimmick, and to focus on stacking up a nice amount of hp. You cannot win against meadow or even deer man with 3 hp anymore, without copious amounts of inventory use damage items... the demo was fun like that :P
Walkthrough - The Easy Part!
This is for all of you who are a little bit stuck. Be warned, this section directly spoils the dream diary puzzle.

We start at the beginning!

As you play the game, you eventually unlock root, whether through sheer luck or otherwise. Playing with Root, you'll inevitably reach the deer headed man, accept his challenge, and then proceed to end the world. When exploring the rooms in this sequence, you'll come across the telephone room, and eventually the telephone will have a line that mentions remembering the number "327"

This is the starting code! But you can't use it yet. So you continue on until you kill meadow as root, and suddenly you've unlocked root's dream diary! Now the fun begins.

Starting Root's dream diary plays a scene between Meadow and the Deer-headed Man (i'm just going to call him Deer from now on) where Meadow is confused, Deer comments about an axe, and then Root realises that it isn't her memory before questioning who she is.

Going through things normally, you eventually reach the screen with a few numbers floating in the air as Root wakes up. moving around, you'll find that going near one of these numbers means that you can change it with the appropriate arrow. We can input codes now, harrah!

Of course, being a smart cookie, you might've figured out that you can input the code 327, and get yet another telephone room! Great! A quick chat on the phone tells you that there's three more numbers to use (066, 518, 676), and this is where the puzzle is.

Exiting through that funny doorway in the void, you may decide on trying 066 first, because we like to do things in order, you'll find an enemy that has juuuust too much health for you to kill, no matter what you do. I guess that's not happening then sadly. And no, don't bother trying to sprint past it into the door. that doesn't work sadly. I tried. You'll have to be at full health to solve this puzzle, so make sure to reset if you escaped somehow but managed to take damage.

So, that was a bust, but you have 2 more codes, and as such, it's onto the next one. Show us room 518! Huh, anticlimactic, it's got the headless man here. You may remember him from breaking the percentage. He's chilling out, just waiting for someone to give him some crimson shards. 95 in fact. Just a few. Well okay, so we have an enemy and we have a goal, but how do we get there? We gotta try the next code, 676!

In 676, you'll find this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying mosquito.
Root, with her base gun damage being 2, and the thing only having 3 health makes this an easy fight. Now, if you're too used to killing things with Root, you might have gone for one of her mutations. This is a problem, as if you lose any health here, you cannot beat the next stage of the puzzle, so don't take the damage up, OR the accuracy up. The ammo or max health is fine though.

Of course, killing this enemy doesn't do just anything, the annoying dude was holding a hp pill! Useful, just useful enough in fact that we can get past that other enemy...

Continuing on to 066, we confront the enemy again. this time with the knowledge that you'll be able to barely scrape by. This enemy might trip some people up, as it does 2 damage, and as such, you'll need to use the strange pill before the second attack, otherwise it'll kill you. Optionally, you can just pray to the moon to block the damage when it comes, since the child of root has a set attack pattern. Style points if you figured that out after headbutting it a couple times earlier.

With your victory in hand, and literally all the crimson shards left in the world, plus maybe a few more, you proceed to the headless man, AND ARE GRANTED DIVINE KNOWLEDGE (of the last number, 124)

Entering in that number, you meet the last story room, and have a lovely little chat with Meadow. A short and sadly unfinished bride meets the god of her world, and lets you know that you're allowed to leave. Truly there would be no escape in the void. That's all there is to this dream diary, it's up for debate if it's unfinished, or there's more codes to be found by someone smarter than me, but you should refer back to the codes section of this guide to go see the special other things for yourself. my favourite is 808. Ester and Rug don't say hi, but they make good company.
Interesting Bugs/Interactions
Naturally, this game contains a few things that might stand out as odd. I've decided to also compile a list of these things for Root's dream diary.

1. If you continue to speak to the headless man, after gathering the necessary shards, he will continue to take them from you, putting you into the negatives. he does not repeat this if you exit the room, and it seems these shards have no use.

2. Your lunar shards are displayed here, I believe it's ,just a copying of the UI from the game normally, but could mean something for a room I haven't seen yet.

3. The Child of Root enemy gives you a medkit. Is this to signify that it is some kind of equivalent to a boss in the normal game? Perhaps it is the last child of Root there will ever be...

4. I think answering the telephone here implies that Root is the yellow eye'd lady/snake? Or perhaps not, I have not remembered that particular piece of lore very well tbh. Either way, the telephone person enjoy's Root's voice, and must know her well

5. Meadow says that the story is unfinished. I wonder if this is pointing to a future game about Root, and her world, or that the story around Root is literally never going to be finished? of course, it could be neither, No-eye Soft could consider the story finished as is. I think i'd be fine with that. (but like maybe there's a cannon scene of meadow getting married? if not please? I forgive her for trying to kill me, let her be happy ;_;)
Edit: I've been told that No-Eye Soft actually has another game featuring Root! It's extremely likely that this is a nod to that project. It's a Sidescroller platformer featuring Root (similar to Root's dream diary) called "Livid Meadow" and seems to be able to be found on Itch.io (Credits to steam users Sortiara and -Dummie- for letting us know!). Happy lorehunting!

6? This number could be yours! just comment what you found that I didn't, and I'll add it with credits!

7. The crosses on the code input room often change. Sometimes they have a backing, sometimes they don't, but there is always two. Is it an aesthetic thing? Probably. Do i want to believe it represents the fact that even at the end of the world, faith is there with you? Not really, that'd be too evangelical for my tastes. I just saw these crosses alot of times when going through codes...
Thanks for reading!
If this guide was useful, or you discovered something I don't have written down, please do leave a comment! I hope you all a wonderful day finding skin for those that are missing it <3

Ps. if someone knows what that space above in room 676 is for, let me know please T^T

very fair 0CalmCasey0, luckily enough, every combination has already been tried thanks to dummie. you can see it if you scroll down in this comments section and the guide was updated to reflect it on the same day dummie finished brute forcing things :praisesun:

In answer to question 5, Meadow seems to be talking about Noeye's other game that he has on Itch.io Livid Meadow, a side-scrolling platformer where you play as Root.
-dummie- 18 Feb @ 11:57pm
DOUBLE ALSO (sorry lol), Root HAS another game by the same dev. I haven't gotten the chance to play it myself yet, but it probably has some puzzle pieces that fit the game and story together some more
