What Exactly IS The "(Screensaver 'virus')"?
Well it isn't much of a screensaver, nor a new methood: this has been around since Windows 98 came out and it hasn't fooled much people. Who uses screensavers today?
What Does This Old Methood Work?
Well, get yourselves comfy, It's gonna take some time out of your life.

It all started way back when Mr. BIll Gates himself created Windows 98 - the revolutionary OS of its time.

But evil Russian computer people have been looking at the files; specifically the screen savers as they thought to themselves in a very heavy Russian-English accent, "Hay! Dis screensavur fyiel hghes a screept! (Hey! This screensaver file has a script!)."

And they turned a harmless reminder of "you need to get back to your computer to pay Gaben," into a vicious executing file that infects all your documents and turns them into screensavers so you won't ever forget how they look like when you don't use your computer for a minute. Oh teh noes!

Several years later, the later generations of Russian computer people said to themselves in a less heavy Russian-English accent, "Hey! Dis screensaver can be yoosed to skam Steem pepol! (Hey! This screensaver can be used to scam Steam people!)."

And here we are today in the year of, well, whatever year you read this guide. Automated persons have invaded our realm of the Gaben and have been sending people screensavers of their "well earned" unusuals in hopes to tricking traders to clicking the "image" and turing all their Half-Life 3 into screensavers! Not the Half-Life! Anything but that!

But instead of turning your Half-Life 3 into a forever-still computer idle program, it will make your Steam account not in your posession! Horrors!
But How Do I Prevent Losing My Half-Life 3, Fluffy?
Well, there are a few things I have to arm you with.

  • Appreciating that the "trader" has in fact sent you a screensaver virus (I'll call them SVs)
  • Knowing not to download and/or opening the SV. If you did, remove it. The effects of leaving it on your computer is unknown, but better to have it gone.
  • And finally, garner more vigilance when treading the trading tavern and reporting/block the Automated Scammer Machine.
Oh Teh Noes! I Clicked The SV! Please Save My Gaben, Fluffy!
Don't panic. Well don't panic as much: you have the power of having phyiscal access to your computer! Take that, Hacker!

First off, I suggest closing your steam in order to prevent the SV from actually gettng into your steam, as it edits and installs files with something that binds itself to your control key and left click. So it's pretty much a keylogger-type deal.

Second: Find the source of the file and delete it! Even though it won't instantly fix it, it prevents it from the source.

Third! Get some kind of antivirus software. I reccomend Malware Bytes to do check the knitty gritty of removing the grime in your computer as it thoroughly looks through the files than that of state-of-the-art antivirus software.

And forth: hope for the best and pray to Gaben he shall dawn upon the HL3 patch to thy presence.

And as a victim of a scam myself too, the best thing to do if it happened the first time is to contact Steam support. I know it's automated bots nowadays, but it's your best shot in recovering your account. Just keep your email safe. I was an idiot by putting the safe code to something that a toddler who is blindfolded could get into. Not making that mistake again.

That's It?
Yep! Unless you want to look at my other guides that aren't exactly related to TF2. Then by all means look at them, because it will make me feel happy inside.

Well since I've further looked into it, it does have coding that allows access to your computer. And when I say computer, I mean your steam account.
