First Match Checklist
By Hardly
A very condensed checklist of just a few key things to help you get through your first multiplayer match of nebulous, and to hopefully have some fun and excitement while you do so.
If you've finished the tutorials, shot up the AI a bit, and feeling a bit nervous about joining a server, maybe this will help :-)

  1. Join a lobby! Don't stress, most will be welcoming and friendly to new players :-)

  2. If in doubt, pick a starter fleet!TF Oak or TF Birch (for ANS), Cobalt Sqn or Garnet Sqn (for OSP), are all straightforward fleet designs to get you started

  3. Ready up! Click the ready button. If it's not working, you may need to wait while your teammates choose their fleet, or to load the map (button in top right)

  4. Deploy near the middle! Oak, Cobalt & Garnet are fairly slow, but have long range, letting them project firepower well from a central position. If you deploy too far to one side, you may struggle to move fast enough if your teammates need your support.

  5. Set your heading! Right-click -> MOVE -> HDG (or keyboard shortcut H). You'll want to keep adjusting your heading through the game. For most larger ships, point your nose in the direction of incoming fire, to angle your armour & reduce your target profile. Marauder lineships are different, get them turned sideways to put their broadside guns pointing at where you think you'll want to shoot.

  6. Don't go alone! If you charge your ships in, alone and without support, they'll likely get wrecked. Stay 3-5km from some teammates if you can - that's close enough to support each other fairly easily, and far enough to help cover a wider area.

  7. Don't hide forever! If you wait in the back behind a rock all game, the other team can do whatever they want, which will also likely involve your ships getting wrecked at some point. Shooting the other team's stuff will force them to respond to you, instead. But how to choose what to shoot? ...

  8. Press SPACEBAR! This opens up a tactical view. See all the red dotted lines? Those point at targets your team is attacking. Pick one that lots of people are shooting at, and join in - focusing multiple fleets' firepower is a good choice.

  9. Shift+Right click! If you have multiple ships in a formation, this will open up a formation order menu, letting you control every ship in your formation with one click. Very useful for getting all your ships' guns shooting at the target you just chose.

  10. Don't panic! Nebulous is complex, and your first game will almost certainly feel chaotic and overwhelming. Try to just flow with the action, and worry about making sense of it all later.
Congratulations!
If you followed all that, you've made it through your first game of Nebulous!

(Bonus: T to chat, TAB to change channels. Click 4-digit numbers in chat to focus a radar track being talked about. DON'T PANIC. Expect to feel overwhelmed. It'll be okay. You got this.)
