I don't understand how to grow mushrooms!
Have no fear, this guide goes through explaining what are the environmental conditions found in the encyclopedia and how to replicate them to get the mushrooms you want.
Understanding the top left UI
The UI on the top left is your 2nd best friend (after your encyclopedia, of course). It's important to understand what each number represents

We can find (text):
  • The current day (Day 91)
  • The current time (10:52)
  • The current temperature (orange text - "Mild" in this example)
  • The current moisture (blue text - "Dry" in this example)

Then for the icons:
  • The current time of day
  • The current weather
  • The current temperature (orange number)
  • The current moisture (blue number)

Moisture & Temperature have different levels represented by a number and a word defining it. The starting ones are:

Temperature
  • 3 - Chilly
  • 4 - Mild
  • 5 - Warm
  • 6 - Balmy

Moisture
  • 2 - Dry
  • 3 - Normal
  • 4 - Damp
  • 5 - Wet

The UI shows both the text format and the number format, but they both represent the same thing (a temperature of 3 will always be Chilly, 4 will always be Mild, and so on).

Weather

The weather (in the beginning of the game) can be either:
  • Clear Skies (Sunny)
  • Raining

Clear Skies doesn't impact anything, but rain changes the moisture.

Rain always gives +1 to the current moisture
Which means that with rain, you'll be able to reach a moisture of 6 (Drenched).

There are more variants later in the game, but to keep this guide spoiler-free I won't go over them. The principle stays the same.
Mushroom Conditions
If you open your encyclopedia after following the tutorial about growing mushrooms, you should have your first blue mushroom, the Stout Funnel. The guide will tell you the exact conditions for this mushroom to grow

You can find both the number & text formats of moisture and temperature, as well if it's a waking or dream mushroom.

Replicating the Conditions
You found some mushrooms and want to replicate the conditions to get some more.

Temperature is (mostly) equivalent to the time of day

Moisture is (mostly) equivalent to the area

The chart in the top-left UI is a reference guide of what environments generate what levels of temperature/moisture.

Moisture
To change the moisture condition, place your cultivator in the appropriate areas

The docks or indoors for Dry (2)

The grass for Normal (3)

The mud for Damp (4)

In the water for Wet (5)

Rain
If it is raining, the current moisture is increased by 1. Which means if you are on the docks, the moisture will be Normal (3), the grass will be damp (4), the mud will be wet (5) and the water will be drenched (6).

If you need rain to get to Drenched (like for the Stout Funnel), you can look at the bottom of your screen. The Forecast will tell you when it will be raining next. Note that the Stout Funnel also needs the temperature to be Balmy (6 - Daytime).

Temperature
For temperature, you will need to wait until the right time of day

  • Night for Chilly (3)
  • Indoors for Mild (4) - You don't need to wait for this one
  • Dawn / Dusk for Warm (5)
  • Daytime for Balmy (6)

Using the bed
The bed is your 3rd best friend. Use it to manipulate time to get to the period you need.

In the 5-day forecast, you can see when it will be raining at what periods of each day. For example, if you need it to rain during the day (which is the case of the Stout Funnel - it needs temperature (6), which is daytime), we can see here that it will happen Tomorrow. So you can sleep until Day the next day.

World
Last thing, don't forget to take into consideration the Waking vs. Dream world! Mushrooms can only grow in they assigned worlds, which means that you cannot grow the Stout Funnel in the dream world even if you have its environmental conditions (6 Moisture and 6 Temperature), because it is a mushroom from the Waking world.
