This guide explains how to use the editor's tools in Rise of the White Sun.

Localization Editor 翻译编辑器

You access the DYO Translation tool from Modding section of the landing page.
您可以从登录页面的Modding部分访问DYO翻译工具。


If this is your first time using this tool or if you want to reset it, press the red button.
It will create versions of the game's text files.

The files whose names start with "custom" are the ones to modify to change the text.
You will notice that there is a lot of text, so it is split into several files to make the workload easier to share among a group of modders/translators.

Some extra folders have been created:

-One with the English version (which is also the default version of the custom files)

-One with the current Chinese translation by the community

-One with the current Korean translation by the community

You can open the folders containing these files at any time by clicking the green button.

After generating these texts, you will notice that a new Language Button has appeared on the main landing page: click it to apply the content of the custom files in the game.

You can share your custom translation on the Steam Workshop by clicking the blue button.
It will generate a mod.
Be careful to create a good image for your mod, because it will be hard to change it once the mod has been created.

And there you go! Now you know everything you need to create a custom translation.

Characters Editor 角色编辑器

Click on this button to access the character editor.

You will probably want to inspect the mod files. You will find them in the game folder, under Mods->Characters->Homemade.

Everything you create will end up in the homemade folder.
In this folder, you will also find subfolders for portraits, small portraits, and icons.
This is where you will place the images you want to use for the characters.

Once the editor is opened, pick a character and modify it by clicking on the yellow buttons.
Each editing panel can be dragged or moved.

Once you are satisfied with the changes you made, don't forget to save the character!

Click on that save button to create a file for the character. Each modified character has its own file, making it easy to share parts of your mod or remove parts of a mod you don't like.

Create a new character

You will probably want to create a new character that is not in the game.

This is done by clicking on the "Create a character" button.
Once a new character has been generated, you can modify everything to suit your wishes. (Don’t forget to save it!)

What will probably cause you the most problems is the subfaction.
This is a non-translated variable used by the code and is never displayed to the player, and there are tons of them.

Worst of all, subfactions will probably be overridden by scenario data, preventing you from doing everything you're dreaming of until a more complete editor is created.

Here are the subfaction names by scenario for the Communist faction so you can save time.
(This is useful for making one of the characters you created appear in a specific scenario.)

Shanghai Uprising: CPPShanghai

Guangdong Revolutionary Base: KominternCCP25

Little Model China: CCP

Little Model China, playing as the Komintern: CCPMMP

United Front: CCP (same as for 1920)

Red Bases - Mao Zedong group: Mao1927

Red Bases - Nanchang group: Nanchang1927

Red Bases - Guangdong group: CCPGuangdong1927

Red Bases - Hubei group: CCPHubei1927

Northern Expedition: KominternCCP25 (yes, the same subgroup as the 1925 scenario)

Upload your mod on Steamwork - 在 Steamwork 上上传你的 mod


Click the Steam Workshop button. It will open a panel where you can define your mod's name and description.
By default, the content will be the "homemade" folder content.

If the operation fails, the Steam error code will be displayed. Failure codes are typically in a format like this: k_EResultFileNotFound.

Be sure to create a great capsule image to illustrate your mod before you upload it to Steam.
A 268px * 268px image would be ideal.

Help! It is broken / Does not work - 救命!它坏了 / 无法工作
I picked an item on the Workshop, but it does not appear in the game

Here are some common causes:

1) Items are loaded into the Steam folders, not the game's folder. You need to find and pick them there, then move them to the game's folder.

2) Are you sure you have selected the corresponding mod? If not, do so from the game's landing page. If the mod/item does not appear in the list, your issue might be related to cause number 1.

I made cool stuff in the Editor, and now the game is broken!

1) Inspect the game's folder and make sure all images are in the mod folders designated for images. An image placed in the wrong folder can break the game.

2) If you can't fix it, simply delete the entire Mods folder, unsubscribe from the Workshop item that may have caused the issue, select "none" in the game's mod selection panel, and then launch the game.
(Do not worry about the mods folder; it will be generated again.)

I can't change the images in the character editor

1) Make sure the path you entered for the images does not contain any ' or " characters.

2) Also, ensure there is an image stored at the correct path.

3) If you edit another character and return to a character whose images you changed earlier, the images won’t show—this is normal. Changes are not applied directly in the editor but in a file that is generated when you save the character.

4) Don't forget to create the character’s Workshop item by saving the changes (using the button in the upper right).

5) If you are testing the effects in game, check that you have selected the right mode before that!

This may be a dumb question, but how exactly do we find mods in the Steam folder, since they're apparently uploaded there.

I subscribed to the "Zhou Enlai Statesman" mod, and I'm checking the folder in "steamapps > common", but I'm not sure how to identify the mod and cannot find it despite scouring through various subfolders.
