On Pluffin Plumage: A Study of Tea and Pluffin Biology
By ElfyBean
Ever see other people's screenshots and think "Wait, how do you make your pluffin have THAT pattern??" Well, wonder no more!
Through rigorous scientific study, I have unlocked many secrets of pluffin colors and patterns, and I'm here to share 'em so you can also customize your little feathery buddies.

There may be spoilers, as far as plants, their fruits, and the colors those fruits make.
Another chapter is in the works, to detail the colors produced by different fruits.

Patterns and how to make them
Aside from the single, solid color that you can change your pluffins to, there are exciting pattern options! Two pattern types, hot and warm, can be made with just 2 fruits, but the third type, cold, requires 3 or it will default to something more swirly.

There are 3 temperature-based patterns for pluffins, and they are locked in with the first cup of tea you give that pluffin The patterns and colors are reset when you move to the next chapter, or go through the Chapter Select screen

Please note that the majority of the examples are made with a quest-related tea recipe from Chapter 4, made with waypur sprout, ghost fruit, and color-swapped ghost fruit
From left to right, cold tea pattern, hot tea pattern, warm tea pattern, and incoming test subject

Cold pattern requires 3 fruits, and results in a harlequin/color block/patchwork pattern

Warm pattern can be made with 2-3 fruits, and results in a blotchy, almost camo pattern

Hot pattern can be made with 2-3 fruits, and gives a lively swirling pattern
Cold Tea Patterns
The order in which you add the fruits to the tea will dictate which color goes where, on the pattern.
1st fruit will set the right side of the pluffin (left, when we're looking at them)
2nd fruit will set the left side (our right, when facing), as well as main head color and the little tuft of feathers by their one long head feather.
3rd fruit will set the color of their wings and back

2nd fruit color impacts head color

3rd fruit color impacts wings and back
Mushrooms for pizzazz
While the mushrooms impact the pattern of the tea itself, in cold, warm, and hot teas, they only impact the pluffins' patterns when added to hot water.

Hue Shrooms add a triangle motif

Gift Shrooms result in a circle motif, rather like psychedelic raindrops

Shrink Shrooms give them tiger stripes!

Dupe Shrooms give them star power! Well, a star pattern, anyway.

Mushrooms can also add their unique flair to 2-color patterns, too!
These colors were made with whistleberry and bite berry and a dupe shroom.

Also of note: (1) There's always a preview visible in the Infuser, and with more than 3 fruits, the tea always looks the same: greenish-orangish-brown (though the texture notes are valid). (2) Even plain water has its own color for the pluffins!

This guide is excellent and I am very happy that it exists. I wish I had read it sooner.
